Loving all these singles I first heard as a man in my twenties back in the 60s. This group were way ahead of their times and still sound good even now!
Of course, this composition is almost painfully good. But the band is really cracking here. The drumming in this song is excellent! When I was seven years old, the performance on this song was what inspired me to play drums. Such a range of expression.
"Six O'Clock" and "Neon Rainbow" by The Box Tops really take me back to high school in Kokomo, Indiana in the 60s. What a great time. So laid back and we didn't have all of the "fast-paced" technology that we do today. It truly was simpler and, for the most part, I think a better time even with the Vietnam War going on. Sebastian is such a great story teller with his songs!
One of their best. It didn't get much airplay when it came out, but still a great tune. Nice audio & video. I do a version of their song "Jug Band Music." Regards, The '62 Mathew St. Band (1 Man-Full Group Retro)
The Lovin' Spoonful. Jug-band rock group formed in NY. John Sebastian(vocals, Guitar, harmonica), Steve Boone(bass), Zalman Yanovsky(guitar),and Joe Butler(drums).Jerry Yester(keyboards) replaced Yanovsky in 1967.Band disbanded in 1968. Summer in the City only #1 song in July of 1966. Band was inducted into Rock&Roll Hall of fame in 2000. Sebastian's solo song "Welcome Back" made it to #1 April of 1976. I have A couple of their 45s, and, their greatest hits on reel to reel tape.Oldies/Goodies!!!
It's so good to hear this song again! The 45 RPM was among my extensive collection of records, bought when I was growing up. Sadly, they were all lost during a move to another town nearly 20 years ago. Thanks for posting!!

Just saw John Sebastian a few years ago in SF. Sounds and looks the same. See him if you have a chance.

As a kid, he was one of the first clever lyric writers I heard. Amazing rhymes and ideas. And cool music.

Zalman Yanovsky put out his own LP in 1970. Rolling Stone dubbed him "best of the bad voice singers"
