Tomatoes grown in Extremadura are grown at such a fast and frequent rate that the supply far outgrows the demand. These tomatoes have been sitting in warehouses for so long that they are not edible anymore and are donated to La Tomatina because there's no other use for them.
It's funny that Americans complain about the Spanish being "stupid," because I have visited that country and I can say that they enjoy life a hell of a lot more than we do.
