No one saw the Dragon Boxes coming. You sound like your patting yourself on the back when you blame the customer for buying the season box sets. No one saw the Dragon Boxes coming until Funimation announced them. On top of that, there are some people who may not be able to afford the Dragon Boxes, seeing as Dragon Box 1 was $69.99 (at least at my Best Buy.)
@BoukenCrimson You seem to be missing the point that *I* bought two of the season sets, so I'm aiming it at myself too. But knowledge of the DBoxes (which I myself did not know about either obviously) has nothing to do with what I said, which is simply a point about not putting down money on things you know are crap because all it does is perpetuate more crap because they know you will buy it.
@BoukenCrimson I'm also putting down the mindset of having to have footage that fits the size of your TV and having that blurry, glossy look. That's the reason the season sets look like they do: because that's what was popular. And, yes, if destroying the picture to get that look is something a person wants, then they deserve to own crap. But never did I tie that into knowledge or lack of knowledge about the eventual DBox release.
GEEZ you can not just hit me with 1:02 like that!! Look I have never even seen DB uncut so I didn't even know that scene existed and to get a shock to the libido like that, man it nearly gave me a heart attack, and I know I'm being perverted but face it everyone (atleast the guys) who is reading this and thinks I'm a horrible person for posting it you either A: thought the same thing that I just said or B: paused the screen and stared at it for atleast a few seconds....don't lie to yourselves.
@WolfFistProductions It's just that so many people don't like "those black borders" on their screens and don't understand why they exist. The opposite problem existed in the past. Most of the general populace didn't like widescreen releases because those were the ones that made the TV have "black bars." But now that TVs are that shape, people have changed their tunes.
@WolfFistProductions Well, see, it's not that simple. Widescreen only cuts off footage in cases like this where it was originally framed for television (or really old movies before widescreen existed). Back when I was talking about, widescreen was very much in demand for videophiles for the very reason you said: if you didn't get your movies in widescreen, then you'd have a release that fit your TV but chopped off the sides. And in cases of really wide movies, that's more than DB ever lost.
@MistareFusion I think I'm starting to get it. Most "purest" DB/Z/GT fans perfer their film in their original state not wide screen. While the average person prefers wide screen right?
@WolfFistProductions Basically, but only because widescreen is being touted as the new thing and is of similar proportions to their TV screens. But they were the same people who were bitching about widescreen when their TVs weren't like that. I have no preference as long as I'm seeing whatever I'm seeing in its original aspect ratio. In the past, that always meant I had to seek out widescreen releases to keep the footage intact. That problem is solved, but now the opposite problem exists.
@WolfFistProductions And it also created a new, unexpected problem that was even worse: people stretching 4:3 images out to fit a 16:9 screen (of which I showed an example). So everything looks distorted and fat. So now instead of just having the problem of movies having their sides chopped off, there's now the problem of TV shows having their tops and bottoms chopped off OR being stretched out to look terrible all in the pursuit of making things fill up the screen. Some things never change.
@MistareFusion Ok folks want the film to fill out their screen. For example in the case of a large flat screen TV can't DB/Z/GT be "changed" so that it fills the whole screen so that their is no black lines on ether the top or bottom? I always thought the film expanded or retracted atomacticlly based on the TV's proportions.
@WolfFistProductions Well, in Dragon Ball's (and any TV show up until a few years ago), the black bars would be on the sides, not the top and bottom. But, yes, it has to be "changed" in order to fill the screen, either by cutting off the top and bottom, or by stretching the image to make it fit. Both are destructive to the picture for obvious reasons. That's why those black bars exist. They're the only way to get an image to fit on a non-conforming screen without sacrificing the image.
@MistareFusion Not I get the problem. Sorry it took so long for me to get it. I never understood the problem until now. That's it I'm boy cotting wide screen TV's! Who is with me?! Lol Jk
I like this review, but i got Dragon Box 2 off Amazon.ca, there still there for around 40 or 50, so if you want the dragon box then order there but does this mean they arent available?:
You've been charged only for the items sent in this shipment. (As per our
policy, you pay for items only when we ship them to you.) The following
items will ship separately, as soon as they're available.`
@MrZman164 Which item did it list as shipping separately? DBox2? Yeah, that generally means they are currently out of stock. The second one seemed to run out much earlier than any other box, and it's been the hardest one to get for, yeesh, probably a year now already. If they get any more in, they'll ship it to you when they do. But, unfortunately, it might not happen.
Yea this just keeps getting worse and worse. No American music, and no american previews. Watching this show with the American music is a must for me because that's how I grew up watching it and it's just not the same without it. At times it seems awkward for me watching stand offs without music playing but that's probably just me.
@vts101 Haha, yes, it is. I forgot that I had used that image. I had used it in my previous video (1776 Review) because the main character from that movie was played by Mr. Feeney, and I guess I decided I could get a little more value out of it.
@CammyWho10 Don't tell anybody, but after the final Z Box comes out, I'm considering doing a "recap" of sorts to the whole thing, wherein I will be super detailed. But as for those specific questions, the Dragon Book that comes with each set is the only "special feature," but they are fascinating to have. The movies were said to have been purchased with the Z masters, but they, if released, will presumably have their own boxset, just as they did in Japan.
@ElricSowrd Why did they not dub the next episode previews? Complicated question, but DBKai almost assuredly has nothing to do with it. Supposedly, up until the DBoxes, Toei had only ever given FUNimation soundless NEPs. That allowed them to dub their own with the same footage but not include them for the Japanese side. So on TV, the English NEPs were shown. On DVD, the early ones featured A preview for the next disc, often as a bonus feature. Then they dropped the feature entirely.
They never bothered to even dub the NEPs for DB even for TV (not sure about GT, but those masters did have the Japanese next episode previews, available on the old GT singles but not the new season sets). And I'm pretty sure the 1st two seasons of Z redubbed didn't have the NEPs either. Probably for all those inconsistencies, and because of the timing problem involved due to the dub versions cutting out the logo card at the beginning, probably led them to just not feel it was worth bothering.
I've been a DBZ fan since it 1st aired on regular tv back in 1996, I was 7 going on 8 and I can say, the Japanese music doesn't appeal to me, Bruce Falconer score appeals to me, *shrugs* maybe I just grew up with it, keep the videos coming homie
@tearsxofxhell Thanks. It's possible I'll recap once all seven are out, although, as I said here, there's really not a lot more to say. I'd love to do reviews of a DB or GT box, but of course that depends on if they actually do them. But there will be more Dragon Ball content from me in the future. ^_^
@MistareFusion I'm definitely looking forward to more Dragon Ball content from you =D
just one question.. I've watched Dragonball Z on Cartoon Network since I was a little kid .. I have heard that the background music is different in these dragon boxes? are the voices of the characters also different?
@tearsxofxhell The music is the actual, original BGM, not what it was replaced with in its American broadcast. The voices... are complicated. If you watched the show on CN in '98, for the first two seasons (the actual US broadcast seasons, not what the season sets call seasons), that voice cast has been replaced. If you're talking about the voices from '99 onward, they're there, but some of the voice work from seasons 3 and 4 has been redubbed (mostly the same actors aside from the narrator).
@tearsxofxhell They are the same except for the redubbed lines I mentioned before. Chris Sabat redid his Vegeta, Sonny Strait his Kuririn, Linda Young her pre-final form Freeza, and Kyle Hebert (who became the narrator from season 5 onwards) replaced Dale Kelley as the narrator in seasons 3 and 4. Actually, all of Dale Kelley's characters were replaced. Brice Armstrong (the DB narrator) redubbed Kelley's Ginyu, for example. Hope that helps.
@tearsxofxhell And, yes, I do prefer the original score. I didn't like Faulconer's even when I first heard it in '99 and didn't know the difference. Earlier that year, Toonami played the first two movies with its original score intact. Like I said, I didn't know the difference but was blown away. I thought it sounded so awesome just because they were movies and had higher production values. I had no idea the TV series was supposed to sound the same way. But of course, your mileage may vary.
@MistareFusion hmm interesting.. I have always been used to the Bruce Faulconer music, as I purchased the VHS Box Set's many years back. I enjoyed them, but I suppose I should give the original score a chance too. Thank you for all this information!! I should be picking up the first Dragon Box very soon =)
@asaikuwarriorx Yes. FUNimation just took the masters they were given and didn't alter them in any significant way. It was Toei who flipped the order.
@engels258759 I'm afraid I've never had to do that before, or at least it's been so long I can't remember. Are you sure it wouldn't make any difference just to convert it to a different, more useable filetype?
However, they did say in their initial press release that they got the rights to the DBox versions of the movies, though (I believe) they said that they'd only release them if the series' DBoxes sold well. Fortunately, not that long ago, FUNi hinted on Twitter at them possibly releasing them.
i've never bought any anime in my life...b/c funimation, viz, and other companies inspire no confidence in me only confirmation of their money grubbing proclivities and cheapness....however your video duet reviews on the dragon box sets have convinced me otherwise...thanks a bunch
if i'm right there are 6 boxes out atm the 7th to come in november... i will buy these... hope others will do the same
@luvfansubs eehh you do you realize that because of illegal downloads and things that the dvds have upped in price and not because the comapnies are greedy and the japanese side of the industry are requesting this too and your only a fan of anime if you support the industry.
@engels258759 If you have an editing program, you can always just type out subtitles along the video track and create a file out of it. But in that case, the subs would be hardcoded into the final product. If you have DVD creating software, they usually have options to create actual DVD subtitle tracks. I'd always heard that the DBoxes use a newer security protocol than their other stuff, which is why DVD Decrypter often can't crack it. I've heard DVDFab works better.
Although I saw these reviews only after getting Dragon Box 5, I do find them quite enjoyable to watch, seeing another fan's perspective.
I'm curious, do you have any interest/intent to get the Kai releases? I'd love to see a review of those (I'm one of those crazies who uses the Dragon Boxes for my Japanese Subbed, and the Kai sets for my English Dubbed).
@Mewzard Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you've enjoyed them. For the moment, at least, though, I don't have any Kai, so you'll have to settle for reading my opinions on the DaizEX message boards. ^_^
I think I might get the Dragon Box, but to tell you the truth I don't care about the previews being after the credits, and about the dubs... well at least the funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai makes up for it, it has the previews and everything so...
@supermancrashin you are a disgrace to this worthless American fanbase. Insulting the true and far greater version of dragon ball is like telling toriyama and toei animation to go fuck off. What I find hilarious is that Sean schemmel and Chris sabbat would probably punch you in the face for bashing the Japanese version. Go get educated you uninformed piece of shit.
@trigon661 Not really. All you need is a program to break your DVD's copy protection (such as DVD Decrypter or DVD Fab) and a program to convert the .vob file from your DVD into a file format (such as an MPEG) useable by your editing software (like Handbrake). I believe all the programs I mentioned are free to download if you search for them. It's not a complicated process, but it can take a while if you're converting a whole DVD. I usually let my computer sit overnight.
I just got my 1st dragon box. I have the season sets already they are nice but nothing like the dragon boxs the Dragon Boxs are a better buy by far. I really hope they make a Sailor Moon set like the Dragon Box.
@AshED65 I always liked the now out-of-print Sailor Moon boxsets that ADV put out several years ago. It's almost impossible to find them for cheap, though.
@CoolioVids101 Ugh. Sorry you had to stumble onto these vids (and this particular comments section) on a day where one of my regular trolls is out to play.
@supermancrashin Wow. You really do have a knack for turning things into a dub/sub debate even when this has absolutely nothing to do about it. You, sir, are the reason why Dragon Ball fans are stereotyped as nerdy babies who feel compelled to whine at everyone who doesn't agree with him. Come back when you've actually studied up some on film preservation and don't just eat up marketing buzzwords like "high-def" and "widescreen" when you don't even really know what they mean.
@supermancrashin Um, this video has been exactly the same for over a year. YOU'RE the one who keeps coming back all upset because your opinion can't handle criticism. But the season sets' problems have nothing to do with FUNimation's (in)ability to dub anime ten years ago. It comes down to simple quality control. If you can honestly defend them knowing full well that FUNimation lied to your face about their contents in their advertising, it speaks volumes of what kind of consumer you are.
@mistarefusion Lol, yeah it has been a while since we last talked. Oh also another thing I wanted to ask you. How do you edit a video? I don't like the stuff YouTube provides as far as editing, I just want to know how to the simple things such as cutting a scene out of a video. Do you know what to do with that kind of thing?
@trigon661 I could have sworn we'd talked editing before. Or are you referring to how to take a scene from a movie on your DVDs and use it for editing?
@mistarefusion I know that you only like to answer dragonball related questions on this video. But I was just wondering are you into Harry Potter at all?
@trigon661 Wow. Hadn't heard from you in a while. ^_^ But, yes, I am into Harry Potter. Well, not so much lately, and I was a bit late getting into the series, but I do own all the books (and have read them several times), and I was present for the launch parties for the last two. However, I haven't seen any of the films since OotP.
What was that all about in the beginning? When you had the pipe and said something about a 40 year old musical?
Honestly, if I never saw this video, I would never have known that the end credits and next episode previews were in the wrong order but I always skip over the end (and opening) credits anyway and watch only the next episode previews.
@theignoredgender That was a scene from my previous video: a review of the musical 1776, which itself had been after two DB-related videos, hence my tongue-in-cheek response to alienating DB fans by doing something totally different.
That what you are doing at 0:14.. that allways happens in the middle of the episodes..does that happen in the episodes on the Dragon Box? Or did they cut it? because i absolutely hate it when that happens..
@markthestrokes Those are what are referred to as eyecatches (or commercial bumpers). About ten years ago, we complained loudly enough that we wanted them that FUNimation stopped cutting them from their DVDs. And since the Dragon Boxes are as complete a release as we've ever seen, they are indeed present as they have been on every release in the past ten years.
fusion what do you think would be the best release set? i think ti would be not a small amount like kai has now like 40-50 episodes per case. with japanese language n music with english cast n music as well. people should have choice for it. alot of people bash 1 side but i like both i prefer englsih cause they do it better but i still enjoy japanese i actually prefer japanese for season's 1 n 2 of remastered orange boxes which in my opinion was the best so far. also it'd need previews 2 all eps
@MistareFusion no i mean what would make the best release like how i ssaid it with everything it should have faulconer n jap music n both audio tracks openings in englsih as well u know that stuff cause dragon box wasn't good for seasons 4-9 the englsih score suits it better but 1-3 as much as i love the english dub n score better the japanese was better for those oldies. funi needs a new release thats complete with recaps n previews uncut n yeah even edited. i want the complete dbz thing.
@princessofDBZ I wasn't able to get any screen grabs with the subtitles intact, so I had to make my own in my editing program. I tried to find a reasonably similar font.
@BoukenCrimson If you're not against ordering online, I recommend Right Stuf. They always have good deals. Dragon Box 5 is shipping right now, and for only $35.99.
@MistareFusion I have a few questions. First of all, I have seen a video that said the Dragon Boxes are limited (I'm not referencing Japan in 2004, when they came out in Japan and were VERY limited), simple as that, but is this true? Also, you mentioned that people who watch the English Voices with the Japanese score are missing out on the next episode previews. Is there anything else wrong with that dub? (I mean that as a legitimate question)
@segakidguy44 FUNi representatives have stated they are "limited." However, that's a very vague marketing term, and no one's really sure what exactly that will mean for the long-run availability of the release. For example, the two-disc releases of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD were said to be limited, and even gave a specific date: 9/06-12/06, yet they're still readily available to this day, nearly five years later.
@segakidguy44 As for the dub, it's the same dub that's on the orange bricks, and, aside from seasons one and two, mostly the same dub that aired on television back in the '90s-early '00s. Obviously that's referring not to the music but the scripting, which is generally pretty poor. I have heard their translation started to get more accurate towards the end of the series, but it's generally pretty loose, not to mention other problems like name changes and mispronounciations.
@MistareFusion Sorry for the typo. I ask this because It's only in the R2 Dragon Box, and I'm not sure whether Toei will keep it or release it? Is that just going to be an extra that only comes with the limited R2's?
how many dragon boxes will there be ? I am a fan of the English dub, however I don't really care that much about the English music, should I sell my seasons and get these ? Will there be Dragonball: Dragon Boxes ? Does anyone know how much people would pay for the seasons ? I know it's a lot of questions, please reply
Great review! I have been a DBZ fan for about 10 years, and I recently noticed the Dragonbox Sets, as well as the Season Sets have been released. I have seen trailers for both and they both look good, but again I have got different feedback on which one is better? I plan on getting the complete series again, but I dont want to waste my money on something not worth it. If you could tell me which one you is better, that would be great! :)
@tearsxofxhell Well, you have probably made your decision by now but what the hell.
Dragonboxes have a better remastering, you get the full picture with little grain and not eye bleeding colours. You only have one score, which is the Japanese score.
Dragonball season sets have a worse remastering. No grain, but it crops out picture as they changed from it's native 4:3 to 16:9. Also the colours are eye-bleeding bright sometimes. It has both scores.
@mistarefusion oh i see so its a decent release, but with a few minor flaws. I own two of them and the video quality is great but I just wanted to know for sure. Also one more question you just had mentioned the remastering is different that the gt sets in what way are they different??
@trigon661 While I personally prefer the old GT singles to the green bricks (just because the singles were more complete despite not being encoded as well), the few screen caps I've seen look fairly similar to the GT Dragon Box in terms of color and quality. Granted, I've never seen either in motion, so make of that what you will.
@mistarefusion can you please answer a question for me? I wanted to know if the dragonball blue brick boxsets if the remastering process is better than those of the orange bricks? I know you yourself are only getting the Dragon boxes, but if you know anything about the remastering and the quality let me know thank you :))
@trigon661 It's definitely *better* than the orange bricks, but, from what I've seen, not as good as the green bricks. The aspect ratio is correct, but it is zoomed in a surprising amount, more than any previous release, so you do lose some content on the sides. It's mostly negligible, but I have seem some unfortunate effects of that. The colors aren't as extremely tweaked as the orange bricks, but they are still far too blue. But overall, they do seem mostly satisfactory.
Alright. I prefer to watch the show in english with japanese music and sometimes the subtitles just to get a feel for the japanese script. I don't care about the american music. I don't mind the japanese title cards, although I prefer the english titles (the japanese ones pretty much sum up the episode and I don't like it) So DB and GT are pretty much watchable except for the title cards???? Do you suggest any other version?? Will they ever release dragon boxes for db and gt???
@iDanielVideo If the English title cards don't matter to you, then the season sets are the best you can get right now. There hasn't been any word on DBoxes for the other two series. I'm still holding out hope, but who knows?
@MistareFusion So the only reason you havent bought the season sets is because the title cards????? really???? I really want matching db and gt dragonboxes!!!!!
@iDanielVideo I own a good portion of both series on the singles and 2-disc sets that came before them. Believe it or not, I don't like buying the same product multiple times, nor can I afford to do so. The fact that the earlier releases have the original titles make them superior to the season sets, so I'm sure not going to invest money in what I consider to be a downgrade. If I am going to shell out money, it's going to have to be for a Dragon Box, so that's what I'm waiting for.
@iDanielVideo Alternate angles is a not-too-often used DVD feature that allows you, at a specific time, to switch to a temporary, different video track. I believe it was originally intended to do things such as pull up storyboards while you're watching a movie so you could compare preliminary sketches to the final product. Up until a few years ago, FUNimation used this feature to display different visual data depending on which version of the show you watched.
@MistareFusion ya I did, but whats the big deal. Other than the title cards being in english, which I don't think is that bad, is there anything wrong with the picture??? I watch it in english anyway............sorry for my confusion
@iDanielVideo Well, obviously it's a relative thing. A lot of people who comment on these videos complain about the Dragon Boxes' lack of the English dub music. Obviously *I* don't think there's anything wrong with that because I watch the series in Japanese anyway, but people who do will be bothered by it. Likewise, if you only watch the series in English, you probably won't be bothered by episode titles created for that version, but I don't, so it does bother me.
@iDanielVideo As for the video quality, it's not nearly as bad as the Z boxes (but you really can't get much worse than the Z boxes). They are zoomed in somewhat, so you are losing some footage on the edges of the frame, and the colors (at least on the DB sets... I think the GT sets are pretty much untouched) are pushed a bit too far into the blue spectrum from what I've seen (again, don't own them myself so make of it what you will). Most people who own them seem to be relatively satisfied.
@iDanielVideo So by that, let's say the English credits and title cards were on angle 1, while the Japanese were on angle 2. If you set the menu audio to English, it would send a flag to the player to display angle 1 at the appropriate times, and vice versa. But they no longer utilize that feature, so the DBoxes only use the Japanese titles and credits no matter which version you watch, and the DB and GT season sets only use the English version, no matter which version you're watching.
@nedelpimp I'd be happpy to. See, the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z television series are actually adaptations of the manga Dragon Ball. The TV series ran concurrently with the comic, so, in order to keep from catching up to the source material, the shows would add additional material (be it dialogue, scenes, or entire plot lines) that didn't exist in the manga. This material is known as "filler" because it "fills" up time between the real events.
@MistareFusion oh thank you for that. i also have a comment my friend who has been with dragonball dragonball z and gt, and he said that gt would have been better that goku would have gone ssj5 but the show got canceld is there any chance gt will be revived
@nedelpimp I doubt it. Shows that have been dead for nearly fifteen years usually don't get revived. Dragon Ball Kai is the only "new" official DB content in the works, and nobody knows how long even that will last.
@MistareFusion well mif it does i sure will be happy to see goku turn super to the fifth level that would be awesome it felt as if the story just stoped in the middle of the whole thing
ey man im mexican i have always loved dbz since i was like one year old is there any season sets that are dubed in spanish i don't really like it but it would be nice to have
@nedelpimp I'm fairly sure that the Mexican dub has been released in its entirety in Mexico. I admit I don't know much about it, so I could be wrong. But if you're talking about an American-made DVD that has the Mexican dub, the canceled Ultimate Uncut DVDs (and a couple of the old singles of the movies) are the only ones that include the Mexican dub track.
@guitar4noobsXD Yes. The entire 276 episode television run was released on DVD in singles form. Check out the DVD Guide at daizex dot com for more information.
MistareFusion, Do you really think I can become a great scholar?
I had no idea why people made such a big deal about next episode previews until I bought this and watched them for myself, they are insanely entertaining.
@Wiinerd37 Of course you can be a great scholar! History has shown that, even if you're kidnapped by a demon spawn, and forced into years of life-threatening, bone-breaking battle during your most formative years, you can easily become a scholar.
i remember back when the season sets came out and everyone was saying it was the true way to watch the show. i never did like the season sets and i just thought that maybe i was the weird one for not liking them and a outcast so i continued watching the original funimation releases because they were 4:3 and didnt have unnecessary grain removal and the 20% image loss, so in my opinion funi's original releases still looked better. i did buy the first 2 sets for the same reason to. YEA!! Dragon Box
I have all of the Dragon Boxes now.I have to say that the quality is up there .It has been many years since I had watched these episodes.Watching episodes consecutively though, you really notice the bad animation episodes. Some of the episodes and scenes look like a ten year drew them.My guess would be budget and time constraints.
@matatski Not as bad. They're still cropped but not nearly as much and maintains the 4:3 aspect ratio. The color altering and grain removal isn't as noticeable as the Z sets. But as I said, they only contain the English version credits and title cards rather than the original.
i just want a dub with faulancer music and a proper translation. thank god 4 kai then but that didnt have faulcancer. i think the season sets should have had that
@mistarefusion oh ok but I saw on one article that it said that could it be fake? Because I have never heard that liking anime is a sin how would you view this do u think liking it is a sin?
@trigon661 I do not personally believe it is inherently sinful. Like with all things, it is the choices you make that determine whether it is sinful. For example, if you remember the Columbine massacre in '99, and people blamed Doom and violent video games. Well, violent video games aren't "sinful." The killers were. That's the difference, if that makes any sense.
@mistarefusion I am really confused about something I have read different articles about it on google and I don't know what to think it says in the Bible that liking anime manga goes against the Christian faith and God disapproves I don't know if it's true supposedly they say anime sends out bad messages especially to children but I don't know what to believe I am Christian I need to know can u explain?
@trigon661 I have read the entire Bible cover to cover, and I can't recall anything where it says seeking Japanese media is sinful. Most who make those kinda of claims have never seen or read any of it. It's usually just xenophobia. Anyone can find ways to legitimize their fear or hatred. I suppose it is possible that God hates *item*, but in this case, I don't see any logic in it. Obviously I could be wrong. It's ultimately up to you to analyze your faith and decide right from wrong.
@trigon661 I don't even think that's logical because the Bible was written long before Japanese media came into existence. But it does say in the Bible that you must love God and not the world (everything else). I'm agnostic, so I'm not speaking as a Christian, but rather as a person who knows the religion.
I bought the first season set, was disgusted by it and vowed to not buy any more of them, mainly because of the faux wide-screen but also because of the overall image quality.
One feature I wouldn't have minded them keeping was the "marathon mode" though. Not a real complaint, but I thought that feature was neat. Since I knew what I was being offered and passed, I have no problem with the Dragon Box sets being released so close to the season sets.
@Tick54 Yeah, that is odd, since the original Dragon Boxes did have a "Story Mode," which is equivalent to marathon. The American boxes replaced that option with a "Setup" menu since it has two different audio tracks and subtitles. The lack of it doesn't bother me as I always watch every opening, ending, recap, preview, etc. anyway and so would probably never use the option, but I don't know why they couldn't have tacked on four menu options instead of three.
I see your points and I understand them. . . most of them I didn't quite get the Blu-Ray hate from the first review. . . although I may have missunderstood that. I however can't support this set, as I can not support the filler. You say that this set really caters to the japanese language fan and that's just fine but what about those of us that where fans from the manga and got screwed over with episode after episode of filler crap. DBKai is the way to go for me, it was a nice review though
I work retail as well and generally I tell people that if they want a pure DBZ experience to get the DragonBox set. But if they want what we where promised from day one. . . . well I was promised. . .at 5am. . .by a friend screaming into my ear about the most badass show ever. . . . .
If you want the fights and the story with out the filler get Kai.
BoukenCrimson 1 week ago
@BoukenCrimson You seem to be missing the point that *I* bought two of the season sets, so I'm aiming it at myself too. But knowledge of the DBoxes (which I myself did not know about either obviously) has nothing to do with what I said, which is simply a point about not putting down money on things you know are crap because all it does is perpetuate more crap because they know you will buy it.
MistareFusion 1 week ago
@BoukenCrimson I'm also putting down the mindset of having to have footage that fits the size of your TV and having that blurry, glossy look. That's the reason the season sets look like they do: because that's what was popular. And, yes, if destroying the picture to get that look is something a person wants, then they deserve to own crap. But never did I tie that into knowledge or lack of knowledge about the eventual DBox release.
MistareFusion 1 week ago
GEEZ you can not just hit me with 1:02 like that!! Look I have never even seen DB uncut so I didn't even know that scene existed and to get a shock to the libido like that, man it nearly gave me a heart attack, and I know I'm being perverted but face it everyone (atleast the guys) who is reading this and thinks I'm a horrible person for posting it you either A: thought the same thing that I just said or B: paused the screen and stared at it for atleast a few seconds....don't lie to yourselves.

What is it with Wide screen that people love so much? I have a cousin who complains whenever something isn't wide screen. I just don't get it.
WolfFistProductions 1 month ago
@WolfFistProductions It's just that so many people don't like "those black borders" on their screens and don't understand why they exist. The opposite problem existed in the past. Most of the general populace didn't like widescreen releases because those were the ones that made the TV have "black bars." But now that TVs are that shape, people have changed their tunes.
MistareFusion 1 month ago
@MistareFusion I see. I've never liked wide screen because it cuts off a lot of film. Can't we all have a square screen and get along? lol
WolfFistProductions 1 month ago
@WolfFistProductions Well, see, it's not that simple. Widescreen only cuts off footage in cases like this where it was originally framed for television (or really old movies before widescreen existed). Back when I was talking about, widescreen was very much in demand for videophiles for the very reason you said: if you didn't get your movies in widescreen, then you'd have a release that fit your TV but chopped off the sides. And in cases of really wide movies, that's more than DB ever lost.
MistareFusion 1 month ago
@MistareFusion I think I'm starting to get it. Most "purest" DB/Z/GT fans perfer their film in their original state not wide screen. While the average person prefers wide screen right?
WolfFistProductions 1 month ago
@WolfFistProductions Basically, but only because widescreen is being touted as the new thing and is of similar proportions to their TV screens. But they were the same people who were bitching about widescreen when their TVs weren't like that. I have no preference as long as I'm seeing whatever I'm seeing in its original aspect ratio. In the past, that always meant I had to seek out widescreen releases to keep the footage intact. That problem is solved, but now the opposite problem exists.
MistareFusion 1 month ago
@WolfFistProductions And it also created a new, unexpected problem that was even worse: people stretching 4:3 images out to fit a 16:9 screen (of which I showed an example). So everything looks distorted and fat. So now instead of just having the problem of movies having their sides chopped off, there's now the problem of TV shows having their tops and bottoms chopped off OR being stretched out to look terrible all in the pursuit of making things fill up the screen. Some things never change.
MistareFusion 1 month ago
@MistareFusion Ok folks want the film to fill out their screen. For example in the case of a large flat screen TV can't DB/Z/GT be "changed" so that it fills the whole screen so that their is no black lines on ether the top or bottom? I always thought the film expanded or retracted atomacticlly based on the TV's proportions.
WolfFistProductions 1 month ago
@WolfFistProductions Well, in Dragon Ball's (and any TV show up until a few years ago), the black bars would be on the sides, not the top and bottom. But, yes, it has to be "changed" in order to fill the screen, either by cutting off the top and bottom, or by stretching the image to make it fit. Both are destructive to the picture for obvious reasons. That's why those black bars exist. They're the only way to get an image to fit on a non-conforming screen without sacrificing the image.
MistareFusion 1 month ago
@MistareFusion Not I get the problem. Sorry it took so long for me to get it. I never understood the problem until now. That's it I'm boy cotting wide screen TV's! Who is with me?! Lol Jk
WolfFistProductions 1 month ago
@WolfFistProductions in your television settings, it can I watch it in full screen I dont know what they complain about but I dont see the issue

I like this review, but i got Dragon Box 2 off Amazon.ca, there still there for around 40 or 50, so if you want the dragon box then order there but does this mean they arent available?:
You've been charged only for the items sent in this shipment. (As per our
policy, you pay for items only when we ship them to you.) The following
items will ship separately, as soon as they're available.`
so, what does this mean?
MrZman164 2 months ago

CammyWho10 5 months ago
@CammyWho10 Don't tell anybody, but after the final Z Box comes out, I'm considering doing a "recap" of sorts to the whole thing, wherein I will be super detailed. But as for those specific questions, the Dragon Book that comes with each set is the only "special feature," but they are fascinating to have. The movies were said to have been purchased with the Z masters, but they, if released, will presumably have their own boxset, just as they did in Japan.

6:12- But why? Is it because it has to do with that they were gonna do DBZ Kai?
ElricSowrd 6 months ago in playlist More videos from MistareFusion
@ElricSowrd Why did they not dub the next episode previews? Complicated question, but DBKai almost assuredly has nothing to do with it. Supposedly, up until the DBoxes, Toei had only ever given FUNimation soundless NEPs. That allowed them to dub their own with the same footage but not include them for the Japanese side. So on TV, the English NEPs were shown. On DVD, the early ones featured A preview for the next disc, often as a bonus feature. Then they dropped the feature entirely.
MistareFusion 5 months ago
They never bothered to even dub the NEPs for DB even for TV (not sure about GT, but those masters did have the Japanese next episode previews, available on the old GT singles but not the new season sets). And I'm pretty sure the 1st two seasons of Z redubbed didn't have the NEPs either. Probably for all those inconsistencies, and because of the timing problem involved due to the dub versions cutting out the logo card at the beginning, probably led them to just not feel it was worth bothering.
MistareFusion 5 months ago
I've been a DBZ fan since it 1st aired on regular tv back in 1996, I was 7 going on 8 and I can say, the Japanese music doesn't appeal to me, Bruce Falconer score appeals to me, *shrugs* maybe I just grew up with it, keep the videos coming homie

tearsxofxhell 6 months ago
@tearsxofxhell Thanks. It's possible I'll recap once all seven are out, although, as I said here, there's really not a lot more to say. I'd love to do reviews of a DB or GT box, but of course that depends on if they actually do them. But there will be more Dragon Ball content from me in the future. ^_^
MistareFusion 6 months ago
@MistareFusion I'm definitely looking forward to more Dragon Ball content from you =D
just one question.. I've watched Dragonball Z on Cartoon Network since I was a little kid .. I have heard that the background music is different in these dragon boxes? are the voices of the characters also different?
tearsxofxhell 6 months ago
@tearsxofxhell The music is the actual, original BGM, not what it was replaced with in its American broadcast. The voices... are complicated. If you watched the show on CN in '98, for the first two seasons (the actual US broadcast seasons, not what the season sets call seasons), that voice cast has been replaced. If you're talking about the voices from '99 onward, they're there, but some of the voice work from seasons 3 and 4 has been redubbed (mostly the same actors aside from the narrator).
MistareFusion 6 months ago
@MistareFusion yeah the voices were different whenever the played the saiyen or namek saga's.
So let me get this straight :P In the Dragon Box Set's are the voices the same from the Cartoon Network showings after '99?
and do you personally think the original BGM music is better than the Bruce Falconer version on Cartoon Network?
tearsxofxhell 6 months ago

MistareFusion 6 months ago
@MistareFusion hmm interesting.. I have always been used to the Bruce Faulconer music, as I purchased the VHS Box Set's many years back. asaikuwarriorx 7 months ago
@asaikuwarriorx Yes. FUNimation just took the masters they were given and didn't alter them in any significant way. It was Toei who flipped the order.
MistareFusion 7 months ago
@engels258759 I'm afraid I've never had to do that before, or at least it's been so long I can't remember. Are you sure it wouldn't make any difference just to convert it to a different, more useable filetype?

No, they don't.
However, they did say in their initial press release that they got the rights to the DBox versions of the movies, though (I believe) they said that they'd only release them if the series' DBoxes sold well. Fortunately, not that long ago, FUNi hinted on Twitter at them possibly releasing them.

cickmore12 6 months ago
@engels258759 If you have an editing program, you can always just type out subtitles along the video track and create a file out of it. But in that case, the subs would be hardcoded into the final product. If you have DVD creating software, they usually have options to create actual DVD subtitle tracks. I'd always heard that the DBoxes use a newer security protocol than their other stuff, which is why DVD Decrypter often can't crack it. I've heard DVDFab works better.

Other than that, keep up the good reviews.

@mistarefusion I want to know how to take a scene from a DVD and put it in a video, is it a complicated process?
trigon661 8 months ago
@trigon661 Not really. All you need is a program to break your DVD's copy protection (such as DVD Decrypter or DVD Fab) and a program to convert the .vob file from your DVD into a file format (such as an MPEG) useable by your editing software (like Handbrake). I believe all the programs I mentioned are free to download if you search for them. It's not a complicated process, but it can take a while if you're converting a whole DVD. I usually let my computer sit overnight.

CoolioVids101 9 months ago
@supermancrashin Wow. You really do have a knack for turning things into a dub/sub debate even when this has absolutely nothing to do about it. You, sir, are the reason why Dragon Ball fans are stereotyped as nerdy babies who feel compelled to whine at everyone who doesn't agree with him. Come back when you've actually studied up some on film preservation and don't just eat up marketing buzzwords like "high-def" and "widescreen" when you don't even really know what they mean.
MistareFusion 9 months ago
@supermancrashin Um, this video has been exactly the same for over a year. YOU'RE the one who keeps coming back all upset because your opinion can't handle criticism. But the season sets' problems have nothing to do with FUNimation's (in)ability to dub anime ten years ago. It comes down to simple quality control. If you can honestly defend them knowing full well that FUNimation lied to your face about their contents in their advertising, it speaks volumes of what kind of consumer you are.
MistareFusion 9 months ago
@mistarefusion Lol, yeah it has been a while since we last talked. Oh also another thing I wanted to ask you. How do you edit a video? I don't like the stuff YouTube provides as far as editing, I just want to know how to the simple things such as cutting a scene out of a video. Do you know what to do with that kind of thing?
trigon661 9 months ago

trigon661 9 months ago

Well, not so much lately, and I was a bit late getting into the series, but I do own all the books (and have read them several times), and I was present for the launch parties for the last two. However, I haven't seen any of the films since OotP.
MistareFusion 9 months ago
What was that all about in the beginning? When you had the pipe and said something about a 40 year old musical?
Honestly, if I never saw this video, I would never have known that the end credits and next episode previews were in the wrong order but I always skip over the end (and opening) credits anyway and watch only the next episode previews.
theignoredgender 9 months ago
@theignoredgender That was a scene from my previous video: a review of the musical 1776, which itself had been after two DB-related videos, hence my tongue-in-cheek response to alienating DB fans by doing something totally different.
MistareFusion 9 months ago
That what you are doing at 0:14.. that allways happens in the middle of the episodes..does that happen in the episodes on the Dragon Box? Or did they cut it? because i absolutely hate it when that happens..
markthestrokes 10 months ago
@markthestrokes Those are what are referred to as eyecatches (or commercial bumpers). About ten years ago, we complained loudly enough that we wanted them that FUNimation stopped cutting them from their DVDs. And since the Dragon Boxes are as complete a release as we've ever seen, they are indeed present as they have been on every release in the past ten years.
MistareFusion 10 months ago

@MistareFusion I have a few questions. First of all, I have seen a video that said the Dragon Boxes are limited (I'm not referencing Japan in 2004, when they came out in Japan and were VERY limited), simple as that, but is this true? Also, you mentioned that people who watch the English Voices with the Japanese score are missing out on the next episode previews. Is there anything else wrong with that dub? (I mean that as a legitimate question)
segakidguy44 10 months ago
@segakidguy44 FUNi representatives have stated they are "limited." However, that's a very vague marketing term, and no one's really sure what exactly that will mean for the long-run availability of the release. For example, the two-disc releases of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD were said to be limited, and even gave a specific date: 9/06-12/06, yet they're still readily available to this day, nearly five years later.
MistareFusion 10 months ago
@MistareFusion Yeah. On Amazon there are 20-30 NEW copies of each volume. I'm going to get them all just in case :D
segakidguy44 10 months ago
@segakidguy44 As for the dub, it's the same dub that's on the orange bricks, and, aside from seasons one and two, mostly the same dub that aired on television back in the '90s-early '00s. Obviously that's referring not to the music but the scripting, which is generally pretty poor. I have heard their translation started to get more accurate towards the end of the series, but it's generally pretty loose, not to mention other problems like name changes and mispronounciations.
MistareFusion 10 months ago
@MistareFusion Sorry for the typo. I ask this because It's only in the R2 Dragon Box, and I'm not sure whether Toei will keep it or release it? Is that just going to be an extra that only comes with the limited R2's?

Great review! I have been a DBZ fan for about 10 years, and I recently noticed the Dragonbox Sets, as well as the Season Sets have been released. I have seen trailers for both and they both look good, but again I have got different feedback on which one is better? I plan on getting the complete series again, but I dont want to waste my money on something not worth it. If you could tell me which one you is better, that would be great! :)
tearsxofxhell 1 year ago
@tearsxofxhell Well, you have probably made your decision by now but what the hell.
Dragonboxes have a better remastering, you get the full picture with little grain and not eye bleeding colours. You only have one score, which is the Japanese score.
Dragonball season sets have a worse remastering. No grain, but it crops out picture as they changed from it's native 4:3 to 16:9. Also the colours are eye-bleeding bright sometimes. It has both scores.
I prefer the dragonbox
gojacketsgo61 1 year ago
I actually havent made my decision yet, so thank you :)
tearsxofxhell 1 year ago
@mistarefusion oh i see so its a decent release, but with a few minor flaws. I own two of them and the video quality is great but I just wanted to know for sure. Also one more question you just had mentioned the remastering is different that the gt sets in what way are they different??
trigon661 1 year ago
@trigon661 While I personally prefer the old GT singles to the green bricks (just because the singles were more complete despite not being encoded as well), the few screen caps I've seen look fairly similar to the GT Dragon Box in terms of color and quality. Granted, I've never seen either in motion, so make of that what you will.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@mistarefusion can you please answer a question for me? I wanted to know if the dragonball blue brick boxsets if the remastering process is better than those of the orange bricks? I know you yourself are only getting the Dragon boxes, but if you know anything about the remastering and the quality let me know thank you :))
trigon661 1 year ago

Will they ever release dragon boxes for db and gt???
iDanielVideo 1 year ago
@iDanielVideo If the English title cards don't matter to you, then the season sets are the best you can get right now. There hasn't been any word on DBoxes for the other two series. I'm still holding out hope, but who knows?
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion So the only reason you havent bought the season sets is because the title cards????? really???? I really want matching db and gt dragonboxes!!!!!
iDanielVideo 1 year ago
@iDanielVideo I own a good portion of both series on the singles and 2-disc sets that came before them. Believe it or not, I don't like buying the same product multiple times, nor can I afford to do so. The fact that the earlier releases have the original titles make them superior to the season sets, so I'm sure not going to invest money in what I consider to be a downgrade. If I am going to shell out money, it's going to have to be for a Dragon Box, so that's what I'm waiting for.

About the first box peeling off, I think FUNimation redid the packaging after complaints for later releases...

@ShinigamiRyukuu
That they did! :)
jpdbzrulz4sure 1 year ago
what do you mean by alternate angles???
iDanielVideo 1 year ago
@iDanielVideo Alternate angles is a not-too-often used DVD feature that allows you, at a specific time, to switch to a temporary, different video track. I believe it was originally intended to do things such as pull up storyboards while you're watching a movie so you could compare preliminary sketches to the final product. Up until a few years ago, FUNimation used this feature to display different visual data depending on which version of the show you watched.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion So I dont understand, what is wrong with the db and gt season sets???
iDanielVideo 1 year ago
@iDanielVideo Just to make sure I'm not repeating myself... you did read *both* of my responses, right?
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion ya I did, but whats the big deal. Other than the title cards being in english, which I don't think is that bad, is there anything wrong with the picture??? I watch it in english anyway............sorry for my confusion
iDanielVideo 1 year ago
@iDanielVideo Well, obviously it's a relative thing. A lot of people who comment on these videos complain about the Dragon Boxes' lack of the English dub music. Obviously *I* don't think there's anything wrong with that because I watch the series in Japanese anyway, but people who do will be bothered by it. Likewise, if you only watch the series in English, you probably won't be bothered by episode titles created for that version, but I don't, so it does bother me.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@iDanielVideo As for the video quality, it's not nearly as bad as the Z boxes (but you really can't get much worse than the Z boxes). They are zoomed in somewhat, so you are losing some footage on the edges of the frame, and the colors (at least on the DB sets... I think the GT sets are pretty much untouched) are pushed a bit too far into the blue spectrum from what I've seen (again, don't own them myself so make of it what you will). Most people who own them seem to be relatively satisfied.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@iDanielVideo So by that, let's say the English credits and title cards were on angle 1, while the Japanese were on angle 2. If you set the menu audio to English, it would send a flag to the player to display angle 1 at the appropriate times, and vice versa. But they no longer utilize that feature, so the DBoxes only use the Japanese titles and credits no matter which version you watch, and the DB and GT season sets only use the English version, no matter which version you're watching.

nedelpimp 1 year ago
hey do you think funimation will release a dragonbox thats dragonball and dragonball gt
nedelpimp 1 year ago
@nedelpimp I hope so, but there's no way of knowing right now, unfortunately.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion oh thats cool cant you explain one little thing to me i have little knowledge of what filler is can you explain ?
nedelpimp 1 year ago
@nedelpimp I'd be happpy to. See, the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z television series are actually adaptations of the manga Dragon Ball. The TV series ran concurrently with the comic, so, in order to keep from catching up to the source material, the shows would add additional material (be it dialogue, scenes, or entire plot lines) that didn't exist in the manga. This material is known as "filler" because it "fills" up time between the real events.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion oh thank you for that. i also have a comment my friend who has been with dragonball dragonball z and gt, and he said that gt would have been better that goku would have gone ssj5 but the show got canceld is there any chance gt will be revived
nedelpimp 1 year ago
@nedelpimp I doubt it. Shows that have been dead for nearly fifteen years usually don't get revived. Dragon Ball Kai is the only "new" official DB content in the works, and nobody knows how long even that will last.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion well mif it does i sure will be happy to see goku turn super to the fifth level that would be awesome it felt as if the story just stoped in the middle of the whole thing

ey man im mexican i have always loved dbz since i was like one year old is there any season sets that are dubed in spanish i don't really like it but it would be nice to have
nedelpimp 1 year ago
@nedelpimp I'm fairly sure that the Mexican dub has been released in its entirety in Mexico. I admit I don't know much about it, so I could be wrong. But if you're talking about an American-made DVD that has the Mexican dub, the canceled Ultimate Uncut DVDs (and a couple of the old singles of the movies) are the only ones that include the Mexican dub track.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion yeah thats what i ment released here in spanish

@guitar4noobsXD Yes. The entire 276 episode television run was released on DVD in singles form. Check out the DVD Guide at daizex dot com for more information.

MistareFusion, Do you really think I can become a great scholar?
I had no idea why people made such a big deal about next episode previews until I bought this and watched them for myself, they are insanely entertaining.
thanks for the great review!!
Wiinerd37 1 year ago

YEA!! Dragon Box

Se7enBeatleofDoom 1 year ago
I have all of the Dragon Boxes now.I have to say that the quality is up there .It has been many years since I had watched these episodes.Watching episodes consecutively though, you really notice the bad animation episodes. Some of the episodes and scenes look like a ten year drew them.My guess would be budget and time constraints.
Johnnybomb1 1 year ago
@matatski No idea. I hope so. I'm putting off buying anything else until I found out.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@MistareFusion
The only thing I don't like about the dragon box is that they take up more space then a season sets its like twice as much space.
VongolaXEspada 1 year ago
@matatski Not as bad. They're still cropped but not nearly as much and maintains the 4:3 aspect ratio. The color altering and grain removal isn't as noticeable as the Z sets. But as I said, they only contain the English version credits and title cards rather than the original.

@mistarefusion oh ok but I saw on one article that it said that could it be fake? Because I have never heard that liking anime is a sin how would you view this do u think liking it is a sin?
trigon661 1 year ago
@trigon661 I do not personally believe it is inherently sinful. Like with all things, it is the choices you make that determine whether it is sinful. For example, if you remember the Columbine massacre in '99, and people blamed Doom and violent video games. Well, violent video games aren't "sinful." The killers were. That's the difference, if that makes any sense.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@mistarefusion I am really confused about something I have read different articles about it on google and I don't know what to think it says in the Bible that liking anime manga goes against the Christian faith and God disapproves I don't know if it's true supposedly they say anime sends out bad messages especially to children but I don't know what to believe I am Christian I need to know can u explain?
trigon661 1 year ago
@trigon661 I have read the entire Bible cover to cover, and I can't recall anything where it says seeking Japanese media is sinful. Most who make those kinda of claims have never seen or read any of it. It's usually just xenophobia. Anyone can find ways to legitimize their fear or hatred. I suppose it is possible that God hates *item*, but in this case, I don't see any logic in it. Obviously I could be wrong. It's ultimately up to you to analyze your faith and decide right from wrong.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
@trigon661 I don't even think that's logical because the Bible was written long before Japanese media came into existence. But it does say in the Bible that you must love God and not the world (everything else). I'm agnostic, so I'm not speaking as a Christian, but rather as a person who knows the religion.

wait so the opening titles to an episode aren't in english?

@RMDecade Nope. Obviously they're subtitled in English if you have the subtitles on. The opening and closing credits are not, however, subtitled.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
I bought the first season set, was disgusted by it and vowed to not buy any more of them, mainly because of the faux wide-screen but also because of the overall image quality.
One feature I wouldn't have minded them keeping was the "marathon mode" though. Not a real complaint, but I thought that feature was neat. Since I knew what I was being offered and passed, I have no problem with the Dragon Box sets being released so close to the season sets.
Tick54 1 year ago
@Tick54 Yeah, that is odd, since the original Dragon Boxes did have a "Story Mode," which is equivalent to marathon. The American boxes replaced that option with a "Setup" menu since it has two different audio tracks and subtitles. The lack of it doesn't bother me as I always watch every opening, ending, recap, preview, etc. anyway and so would probably never use the option, but I don't know why they couldn't have tacked on four menu options instead of three.
MistareFusion 1 year ago
I see your points and I understand them. . . most of them I didn't quite get the Blu-Ray hate from the first review. . . although I may have missunderstood that. I however can't support this set, as I can not support the filler. You say that this set really caters to the japanese language fan and that's just fine but what about those of us that where fans from the manga and got screwed over with episode after episode of filler crap. DBKai is the way to go for me, it was a nice review though
Aahz321 1 year ago
@Aahz321
