I had this album and Sly and The Family Stone, and a few other bad ass black L.P.s in the early 70s. Not bad for an 11-12 year old white boy, raised by racist parents(rip mom) I ended up in youth lockup alot and had to choose sides. That sucked cause I got along with the blacks better then I ever did with the mexicans,lol..
This white boy wishes he could have been there getting loose on his feet with some TRUE dancing cut loose folks with Mr. Mayfield. WOW. People do NOT know how to dance like they did back in the 70s. Thanks to African American clubs for allowing me to get in and learn how to get funky and appreciate true soul music.
this sh!t was BAD ASS! also looking at curtis, you wouldnt think the dude has such a smooth falsetto as he did, some of these "pretty boy" singers today give it a shot, but please know it came from right here. curtis, we love you!
WHY were they singing about my cousin Jery.. he was a pusher, man..until the law caught him...then he was gettin pushed in the ass,man...dont sell dope!
They made him censor this song. When he says, "I'm your doctor when in need", the next line should be, "have some coke, have some weed." Also, after the line, "secret stash, heavy bread", the next line should be, "baddest bitches in the bed."
@gtrscience1 - THAT'S BECAUSE THERE IS NO " N" WORD IN THE SONG. IN THIS SONG HE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS AND SAYS NIGGER. AT LEAST IT SURE SOUNDS THAT WAY. RIGHT?
man the monkey from hangerover 2 had me rolling on the fcking floor with tears in my eyes when they play this. i have always like mr mayfield, he taught me to never give up on my people! and to love them at whatever level they are in life. really sad how the new generations "do not have enough" real role models to help them along the way.
@yankeeballgame ... No you wouldn't ... there'd be a bunch more ... even freckled people be there getin some and everyone digin the groove ... in a flawed world ...
Love soul train back in the day black people had fun without fighting and acting like fools it makes me happy to see this i just wish things were like they use to be they should of never took soul train away thats wat kept all people together
The usual practice of the time, censorship! Those "want some coke, have some weed" lines were left out to only to be clumsily substituted by other lines of the song. Poor Curtis!
@ripmeast21 ok enough with bullshit, he put that in there as a part of the artistic expression. i cant believe black folks today got the nerve to forget the real terms of endearment of the word nigga, not nigger,. the power behind it is immense. for you u and the 12 idiots to question a legend and the things he has done in the most turbulent times in black history is straight bullshit, get over yourself and see the bigger picture.
As if it wasn't bad enough to have to lip sync, after building him up as the great lyricist that he was, they tamper with the 'coke weed' lyric during his performance. Poor poor.

Wow, flashback! That Don Cornelius must have been gettin some serious tail back then, haha. What a pimp! It seems so strange seeing a crowd that is 100% black. I'm so used to seeing crowds being mixed nowadays. I do remember what it was like back in the 70's though. Wasn't easy for minorities. But I guess that's what this song is about, really. So glad the backwards racists have lost so much ground.
@Hustman1619 Hopefully a lot of it. Look at Curtis Mayfield's suit looks like he went for a swim in a mound of coke and came out all dusty. R.I.P Curtis.
@Hustman1619 what an ignorant comment! a former flat mate of mine was of African background, he has lived in a few countries including the USA. When I was in Berendo Jr. High (L.A.) in '72, our math class was in the basement, and every day without fail, this kid would slowly walk by singing "Pusherman" in a lazy, nursery rhyme sing-song style, and the whole class would crack up every single time.
