  • The lollar one has a lil more mids compared to the one made by CC. Very close sounding though..

  • cc is a bit lighter sounding

    i like that

  • I if played that way I would not care a bit about the pickups..!

  • I will presume that the strings are identical on both guitars...Where did you get the pickguards for these?

  • made them out of celluloid tortoisehell............ after all I am a guitar maker

strings are identical on both guitars, flatwound

  • I must agree, I don't hear any thing that would distinguish between the pickups. I think that both pair with your guitars quite nicely.

    You do lovely work.

  • thanx, appreciate it

  • you're welcome it was a pleasure

  • The lollar sounds with more dimension more fatty tone & that is the kind of sound for jazz. I have a Gretsch g100 Synchromatic archtop and I was looking for a pickup. Is easy to buy the charlie christian pickup and make the luthier work?

    Thank You

  • hi buying is easy to build it into your guitar is another cup of tea but a good builder / repairman can do it

  • Lollar was the first one...

  • yeah I have used them for 6 or 7 years now i think, always super consisten quality build and sound.........

  • I hear a warmer sound from the CC. The Lollar is a little brighter, more defined high end. I love Lollars.. but by this test (and youtube audio leaves much to be desired) I would go with the first one.

  • yeah it's difficult to judge with the YouTube distortion, they are both great pickups, the best you can get............

  • Am I the only to hear a big difference of sound volume?

  • Probably......... haven't heard it from anyone else and I don't hear a volume change when playing the guitars live.......

  • @eluxoso

compare 0:36 and 1:16. Not a huge difference. But the end of the phrase is deafened by the start of the next.

    @danielsalaman

could't the minute differences in character be attributed to the guitars? Carved spruce tops can't be made 100% consistently...

  • @mourningleaves

what i hear mostly is a difference of volume. I read somewhere the Lollar is less heavy. That would also make the top vibrate a little bit more and cause a different and louder sound. ? Also both pickups are a recreation from historical pickups whose magnets have lost some of their power with time, it's not surprising there's a slight difference of output.

  • the main purpose of the video was to show that the diffrences are very small and marginal, they are both magnificent sounding pickups, nailing the pre-war CC sound

  • @eluxoso I hear it too, but of course it might not have anything to do with the pickups. In any event, assuming all things are equal, the first pickup was noticeably louder and brighter.

Edit. Now that I listened again, the first chord with the Lollar pickups was very loud, but then you can hear Mr. Slaman step on a foot switch of some sort. So, that might well be why there seems to be a difference in volume. In any event, the Lollar sounds brighter... assuming the guitars are identical.

  • @Hoopermazing pickup... not pickups.

  • hi, no footswitch or efeects are used, it's just a squack in the chair, you van hear it on many of my other video's when I move around...........

  • I knew it!

  • nice to get to hear that comparison- thanks

  • thank you, very helpful

  • you're welcom
