I love the sound of Mountain Banjos and your picking is amazing. Where did you get this one ? I'm a beginner in banjo and I wonderded if the fact that most of these are fretless make them really harder to play ?
I've been studying the works of Dock Boggs very intently, and this tune sounds so similar to a tune he played that I was attempting to pick up. Its in another video on Youtube actually, with Mike Seeger playing it on Dock's actual banjo. Mike referred to the song as Davenport.
Sorry, just a random little audiological connection.
This is excellent! I love it. Sorry to ask a boring question, but I'm a novice banjo player....what is the tuning? Thanks for this glorious music. - Paul
I remember that banjo well, from shows at the Black Sheep, Iron Horse & venues in between. Always thought it pretty badass that you played a fretless banjo. Any chance that you might come through Providence sometime? It'd be great to see you play again.
Great to hear your banjo again Tim. Funny thing about these fretless mountain banjos, you think they need a lighter touch but, in fact, the harder you play them the better they work! Hope to catch you and CD at Sidmouth this summer!
Also, it was your nice recording of Omie Wise which inspired me to cook up a (less impressive) banjo arrangement of it myself which I hope to post to youtube before long.
Yes not much snow this year .. If you are ever in Litchfield county stop by the pottery .Its in Bantam . It would be great to play a bit .. I just got one of those Gold Tone OT 6 . That extra lower string is really great for color . All the best , Guy
Well thats a hoot !! I will ask the old timers like Jimmy Gossley where that was . There is still a dairy farm up on Prospect Mt . We got a ton of billionars now .. Horsea and tennis courts . Ask your mom about Tude Tangquay . A great local fiddler in the 40's 50's and 60's . There were some very god dance bands around here back then . All the best , Guy

Damn that's dark-sounding. I love the melacholy of the music contrasted with what looks like rather cheery sunlight. Thanks for posting!

There's a guy named John Peterson who makes mountain banjos like this to order, including shipping, for 200-250 dollars on eBay.

I love how you can see the wood wearing/discoloration of fingerboard down to the fifth string tuning key. A well-loved banjo, to be sure.

@foureyes99 Good eyes man! Yeah, I got it new but it's been my main banjo for a long time now.

Chuck Lee makes some beautiful, wonderful banjos. You seem to have all the banjo you need. Very impressed.

@guywolff Hey man- my mom grew up in Bantam (next to Mattson's farm, if that means anything). I'll give you a shout if I'm coming through...
