There was a time in Glasgow when you couldn't put on a radio station without hearing Tinseltown. For me though this song is their best, it simply melts me away every time I hear Paul Buchanan sing. A beautiful song in every sense.....
Didnt go to see them in Boston at the Paradise in 88? Passed by the sign, kept driving. I was a 24 yr old shithead. Mistake of my life(among many others)
This is my favourite band, I think they are fabulous....I have all the above mentioned CDs( I am also from Glasgow) living in Yorkshire since the early seventies.....thanks for posting this...

I have the vinyl of "Hats", I used to listen to it a lot in the 80s. The music is sublime, and the video too. Bravo to the director, who captured the meaning of the song: the pain of lost, or unrequited, or ending love. I especially like the "meeting bit", where different people look for their loved one.
The only low point of the video, that actually makes me cringe, is the 80's look of the girl: heavy make up, tan and pale blue jeans. Apart from that, a perfect video for a perfect song.
@jezzyby47 Right: it's an 80s video, but the song doesn't belong stricly to the 80's. It could have been written in any other period. It's an immortal song (this is why it aged so well). And this is why the 80's look of the girl is a bit out of place. Hope I made myself clear. Ciao
@Vispateresa3 - There are lots of songs that are timeless. You make the video at the same time as you make the song, to promote it. Therefore it would have to be 80s influenced. The video director could have done it in a style of a different era i suppose, but most do it in the style of the time that the song was wrote in. In this case it was 80s. Although it did have a 60s car in it.
@jezzyby47 Maybe it's time to make a new video for this? Anyway, the song is timeless, and the video is extremely poignant (much better than the other one that is on Youtube). It's not easy to see this on MTV or other music channels these days (I remember I saw this on "Ten of the Best" on MTV about 15 years ago, where two members of Simple Minds chose their favourite videos). Thanks for posting it, you made me rediscover a band I loved a long time ago.
I think hats is my fave album of all time.Nothing else makes me feel like that album.I like all Blue Nile but hats for me was just so much.I loved it then and love it now.It will always sound great.
Also, have you seen the interview with Paul Buchanan on Ireland's TV3 breakfast show? He comes across as a really nice guy. I'm glad to share my nationality with him.
Great song. I actually saw this band play in Chicago at the Park West. It was in the late 80s (89?) or early 90s. I went with thisgirl from HK, a friend of mine I used to work with and go to grad school with. I lived nearly in an area called the Gold Coast. We were close so we just walked there. I remember it was hot that summer they came and they said it was their first time in Chicago and loved it. They saw Sears tower and everyone cheered. I remember.
lets get the garbage/comedy out the way..annies good..but not close to PB..nobody will ever get close to him singing this/tinseltown/headlights or even sinatra..
the guys a class apart..
god bless paul.any chance of the next one before 2013??
What Annie lennox a better version? No offense but this is one of the near perfect bits of music wriiten and sung.
I defy anyone to listen to this in the early hours of morning and not be moved. Sometimes I have to stop playing this song, as I think I might cry, because of how good it is (as is the rest of Hats)
Im sure it would make a great track in a movie and give it the fame it deserves
Well done for uploading this classic Blue Nile track. One of their best I think....I never get tired of listening to it....great to see the original video!!! Paul B. and the rest of the band look so fresh faced!!

@Gandor83 - They are the world's most 'prolific' songwriters. 4 albums in 30 years. We are all still waiting for the 5th. Check out their stuff.
1. A walk across the rooftops - 1983.
2. Hats - 1989 (This track was on Hats)
3. Peace at last - 1996.
4. High - 2004
