  • Drawing on the computor is hard as hell. Good job

  • very nice compliment! I would like to invite you for a ride in my youtube canai ... I only have two vidoe for now because it is loaded from a few days that I am part of Youtube I hope you will enjoy:)

  • you are a very talented artist love your work

  • On paper, I know what I'm doing. In Photoshop... I get lost in the tools and the presets and effects... I haven't got a clue what I'm doing! On top of that, I haven't got a tablet, and using a mouse to draw is no easy task...

  • what did you do at 3:11 to 3:20 ? i didn't understand . so you made a mask or what an then inverse something .... please explain :D

  • @teo1th

i think it was just to check if everything is selected fine

    anyway its not so important..

  • @teo1th He made a mask so he can copy it onto another layer where he can lock transparency to prevent drawing outside the creature.

  • Hello, I'm using a different version of photoshop than you, And I'm wondering what tool you're using to illustrate with? It almost looks like the burn tool, which I rarely use, In which case I was wondering what does the "range" dropdown menu at the top do? what changes when your switch it from "Shadow" to "Highlights"?

  • What does adding the noise to the photo help with?

  • @artgirlmj He adds noise and desaturates it to create texture and tone.

  • u use burn tool? whay dont use brush for shading?

  • thank you very much ... a million thanks for this wonderful video (first and second part) really thank you .... greetings ...

  • What did he do when the lizard when red? was that a mask? cause it wont let me mask on the background layer

  • I got this rather simple problem that I seem to have. Whenever I am drawing on the tablet I am unable to draw the lines I want like on paper. They are usually are drawn at a wrong angle etc.... do you got like a tip on how to be more accurate when using a tablet when drawing? I usually draw with the paper at a slight different angle and tilt my head... so could that be the reason I'm having problem with a tablet?

    Thanks alot in advance =D

  • @Simbamania learn how to use the tool, look for tutorials and them configure to your choice or donwload a preset pencil and give it a try , i had the same problem in graphiti portrait drawing.

  • what size brush please =]

  • ive always had problems turning my sketch into an actual piece.. but after watching some of your technique.. and the order in how you do it.. MANNN!!! i just whipped out probably the best piece ive ever done.. im tellin you.. you should sell some tutorial dvds.. everybody would buy em..

  • Amateur doing an amateur question: Why do you add noise?

I'm a big fan. I can't draw like that but i like watching what you do to learn some technics.

  • What did you do at 3:00 to make your lines bolder to select the outer region?

  • I'm your FAN, dammit lol

  • Could you make a similar video of how you paint a person?

Please, it would honestly mean a lot.

  • he makes it look so easy....what tool is he using???

  • Alekh12345 has anger problems he is always swearing or saying something rude to someone in all of his posts.

  • language.

  • look at the top left of the screen and read, photoshop

  • Ha its actually photoshop. Why id you try and say it wasn't when it clearly is you can even see it on the finder bar, yet still you say it isn't. Someone doesn't like being wrong.

  • uhhh... look on the finderbar...

  • sorry, but, its actually photoshop by adobe :)

  • Quite a few comments here are asking why the burn tool seems to not be doing anything. Take a look at the top. You can select the range which will be affected by the burn tool, either highlights, midtones or shadows. He seems to be doing most of his drawing using midtones.

  • actually, midtone also makes the lines very light, he's using highlights

  • hey are you useing a mouse or are you using one of thos things that you can actually draw with

  • a graphics tablet, yea he does. =)

  • they're called tablets and he uses those for all his photoshops

(he recommended the WACOM ones to me :D)

  • Is the Genius TabletPen Brand any good. I have a 8x6 Inch area to draw on. Im an artist starting out practice in Photoshop painting. And I got one for an awesome half off price. Is Wacom better, it seems the professionals use it mostly. Like Dylan Cole, I got some of his landscape matte painting tutorials from Gnomen Workshop.

  • the wacom tables are difinitely superior. after all, wacom holds 95 % of the drawing tablet market.

  • I like the Genius one I got though. Im a beginner at Digital Painting, so at least its good practice. It might not be as good, but I think there are ways I can configure settings to get just what Im looking for. Good thing is a know a bit about photoshop brushes, and other tools, already.

  • Hold on, is that MAC OS 10.3?

  • wonderful no sound ?

  • thanks for sharing your technique it is very informative.

  • what program is that?

  • photoshop

  • porkshop cs2..

  • man eres la inspiracion que necesitaba para seguir siendo artista se te agradece de corazon

  • i find it really funny that he draws with the burn to which is actually ment to make shadows:P. Never thought about that.

  • cant you explain it.. would be easier

    gj btw

  • hey man... it helped a lot

still.. I couldn't get most of the things you did exactly

hope you do some tuts about this

  • hmm, in my case nothing happens when i try to use the sponge tool and others. its quite discouraging...

  • hmmm... funny, when i get discourage i get couraged. isnt that just weird? i always think, i cant get this good, then i think, "hey, no one is good in the beginning, if he can train so good, maybe i can, too!

  • perfect attitude for practicing in anything

  • you think?

  • artists watching and learning from this should forget worrying about software and versions of photoshop hes using, cgsbgs skills in the basics - perspective, edges, proportion, placement, understabding light &atmospherics is what makes his work jump from the page.

  • Thats true but on paper he is also able to make it jump out just by making things darker or lighter. Photoshop is just a way to make things easyer.

  • hey man go make a dragon tutorial

  • ∞/5* dude!! small question: why don't you get a newer photoshop version??? some kind of protest against adobes pricepolitics?

  • I like this technique: first sketch and then details and colors :) I realy want to learn how to paint like you it looks amazing!

  • this be my beatin stick

  • Hey, sorry if this question has been asked several times, but at how many pixels do you start out at exactly... I know it varies but when you go to make a new painting, it asks how many pixels, so what would be a good number if you were looking to make a highly detailed image??

  • Wow, that's really nice. Is that Photoshop on a Mac?

  • after he selects the creature at 2:53 what does he do so that he's able to paint only in the creature area after deselecting ?

is he using a layer mask ?

if so why isn't it shown on the layer ?

  • Ctrl + click on the layer, it selects everything on that layer from the outer edges as if it were a shape and lets you paint on the inside of that shape.

  • PROTIP: When you select an area, you only paint inside that area.

  • what software did you use?

  • as you can see in the upper left corner:

    Adobe Photoshop.. is guess cs..

  • I see why it's useful when it comes to shading, but is there a difference between doing the sketch with the Burn tool and doing it with the Pencil?

  • As I was watching this video I noticed what looked like the first thing you did was use the burn tool to lay down your outline. When I went into my Photoshop CS it doesnt do anything when I use my burn tool on my white Background.

  • nevermind. Looked closer and saw you have it set on highlight.

  • have you ever drawn any cards for Magic: The Gathering?

  • Thats exactly what I was wondering! His style is a lot like some of the newer editions.

  • You can do step by step examples to learn?

  • love your work, i just cant tell what tool it is you use to paint in general? it seems to be 2 icons below brush. can you tell me please?`

    best regards

    nis

  • Very cool of you to add this. My only suggestion is this, Photoshop takes up so much screen space that I would only leave your tools up when you are choosing a brush, changing a layer etc. Then when you are painting just hit TAB and have your canvas set to full recording resolution. This way you will get the best of both worlds! :)

  • you should have started with part two :P the first part help me a lot but when i started to add color to my drawings, i get really messed up so i let them black and white

  • Cool, it helped me a lot... I'm waiting for Part 2... my problem in this is the painting part.

I can draw but when I have to paint it, there I can't continue. It would be very good, if you would make a tutorial how to paint, example: a man or a girl...(and also how to paint hair ) with the best techniques.

    Thanks a lot for tutorials...

  • Thank you so much! Although I have PS7 and wonder if I even have some of the options your program has.

  • will next tutorial/vdieo whatever show us how you colour becuase that is what amazes me most about your art work :)

    thanks-

    Matt-

  • convert it into 640x480 resolution to get high quality :)

  • Thanks Chris! I just received your "Lurking" dvd in the mail!! You can learn a lot from just watching you with your selections. When you add a little commentary the vids will be priceless! thanks!

  • thank you for posting

  • WOW! thanks for sharing this with us---can't wait for parts 2 and beyond!

  • I am amazed by how you can make your lineart so clean. Very beautiful drawing and I hope you upload the finished version of it.

  • he looks like slardar from dota. cool ^_^

  • Showing a 1900x1200 (or whatever your monitor is set for) screen at 720x480 will take a toll on tiny characters. What premiere lets you do is zoom to the menu (for example) so the menu takes the entire viewing area of the produced video. the real size of the menu may only be 400x300 pixels which will look fine on youtube if that is the only thing your looking at in the 720x480 area. Then zoom back out to the drawing area (which isnt as effected by resolution) while your sketching

  • Tutorials won't be that much used to you... if you wanna draw like him you need lots and lots and LOOOTS of practice.

  • How about a voice over instead?

  • Yeah, that's coming. This is sort of a lead-in to that. I'm doing this to also work out the bugs and figure out the best way to make these final tutorials.. And at the same time, give people something to chew on, while giving feedback.

  • @cgsbgs So when are you going to make a tutorial with a voice over, or at least some tutorials like this one

  • Chris, do you had access to something like Adobe Premiere Elements for mac or something similar? It allows you to zoom around so you can focus in on important sections, menu options etc, to compensate for Youtube's quality (even at the size you had it , it was hard to see exactly what you were doing at times) then zoom out to the full screen again. Thank you for taking the time to do this, btw

  • Nice, but I put music in the background.

  • im excited :o

  • to me this isnt any different then a fast forwarded video of one of ur painting videos or anyone else who does a speed painting

  • I notice some extra steps that I don't understand. I wondered why you do color noise, then the extra desaturate step, instead of clicking "monochrome" in the noise menu. Softer noise? I'm also a keyboard shortcut nut, so it makes me cringe to see people have to hunt through menus for cut & paste but I know some people hate keyboards.

Damned impressive for a 10min sketch!

  • my guess is that he did it to show the process. the menu is much more clear than if he used keyboard shortcuts not visible to us.

  • Awesome, this is really helpful.

A quick pointer though. Try uploading your tutorials @ 640 x 480 resolution. That way, people can add "&fmt=18" to the end of the video's URL and watch it in high quality

  • I just checked--- the video's dimensions is 720 x 480. What am I doing wrong?

  • Hmm...well you might have to wait until YouTube allows it to be viewed in high quality. Its weird, the high quality feature is wonky at times. Just keep uploading them in high res and eventually they should be viweable that way.

Anyone who is familiar with Photoshop should in the meantime be able to follow along simply due to menu choices. Even without reading them, the location should be enough to follow along, it was for me.

Quick note, you know you can make monochrome noise, right?

  • you can make youtube videos high quality by adding "&fmt=18" at the end of the url.

  • lol thats what started this conversation in the first place. I suggested and tried that but it didnt work. The vid was uploaded @ 720 x 480 so Im assuming YouTube has processed it for high quality yet

  • thanks for that. how did you find that out?

  • @demonicbunny666 that is soo cool, I learned something new today! I am gonna test that on every video now. Thanks!

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSsss

  • You should put out a bulletin when you add annotations. They'll be a big help. Super jazzed for those tutorial vids/dvds.

  • It is always fun to see how people do it. And it is no different with this one. and of course it looks good already. :)

As for the resolution, you can probably see that it is not possible to see the actual text. But it still gives a person a general idea of where you might have found a certain feature.

  • I can't wait till I get my tablet!! What type are you using wacom tablet, that what i'm getting.

  • Same here. Im hopefully getting an intuos. I think thats what he uses too.

  • You can use a cheap tablet (genius, digipro) although you would save alot of headache with even a cheap wacom (bamboo). Even the bamboo is very accurate tablet to screen, although the work area is smaller than all but the smallest intuos. And yeah i think he said he uses an intuos.

  • nice

  • nice!

  • Awesome, and very helpful! I've been seeing alot of videos on here that are 20 mins +, they might have extended the allowed running time on videos. Not sure if thats helpful or not, but it might be worth a look into. Hard to explain yrs of aquired skill in under 10 mins LOL. Thank you for sharing, it's great when people are willing to share such a wonderful ability with others. Much appreciated :D

  • Nice. :D This really helps, lots. Appreciate it.

Cant wait for the annotations. :)

  • a very good tutorial :) nice to know how ou do your paintings

  • WHOOO Im the first person to watch it and comment and rate ;D
