I have respect for anyone who has stepped up to the Journey centre stage mic since Steve left. Yes they are talented, no argument there. They will never replace Steve for me but they can't hire someone who doesn't sound like him to do their back catalogue. So why didn't Journey retire Perry's songs and let these other singers blossom in their own material and not be continually compared to Steve? It's all about the money.

And that sums it all up - Arnel rejuvenated the band with his energy,passion and genuineness. Yet, he has a similar voice to Perry, which marries the old and the new in such seamless fashion, there's got to be divine intervention somewhere there. No one is replacing Perry. It's a new Journey, yet the oldies can still enjoy the nostalgia of the old journey. Best of 2 worlds!
The new singer sounds just like Steve Perry. I guess it's a "good" thing, but he sounds so much like Perry, that they might as well be a cover band. Why not just listen to a tribute band? Find a guy with a great voice, not one that sounds just like your former singer...

Just saw Journey 4 the 1st time with Arnel, & the show was awesome! Yes, I agree that Perry was the voice in the 80's, but when someone doesn't care enough about his band or his fans to b there..... What do u do ? U go forward! By the way those great songs that Perry sung in the 80's were mostly written by Johnathan Cain.
On all the albums Perry and Cain did together they BOTH wrote all the songs together, with help from Neal on many as well. The only song Jon wrote completely by himself was Faithfully. I was pretty sure on this, but I just double checked the liner notes on those 4 albums.

I wish Arnel and this "other" Journey success, but for me there will never be a JOURNEY without the voice of Steve Perry. (Apparently fans, & the band, didn't take much of a liking to him either.) Yes, Arnel IS a great vocalist but he is in no way better than Steve Perry in his prime. I do agree with you: it's about the music, liking it or not, "feeling" it or not. I just wish "Neal's band" had left Journey songs alone & done their own new music.
I've liked Journey for a long time.....what was it that caught my interest with them...it was the music...and the incredible voice singing along with the music. Note - I said the incredible voice and the music...Not Steve Perry...and Neil Schon..or any other individual in particular. I don't think you guys get it. Journey chose Arnel because he has a great voice, not because he's trying to imitate Steve Perry. Steve is a fucking legend. No one can replace him. But Arnel brings in something new, a more youthful voice into a diminishing band. He brought the Journey of old back into the limelight! If it wasn't for Neal's proactive approach in searching for the right singer, they wouldn't be where they are today.
I just went to see Journey a couple weeks ago on their newest tour. They are touring with Night Ranger and Foreigner. Like it or not, people were walking in en mass halfway through Journey's set. The band, while still great because the band members who are legends, are brought down by a talented man who has gotten too big for his britches, and sings mediocre at best.

I will be seeing Journey, Foreigner AND Night Ranger tomorrow night. What do I think of Arnel? Good singer, great moves. Is he Steve Perry reincarnated? Of Course not!. Does he want to be? I have respect for anyone who has stepped up to the Journey centre stage mic since Steve left. Yes they are talented, no argument there. They will never replace Steve for me but they can't hire someone who doesn't sound like him to do their back catalogue. And that sums it all up - Arnel rejuvenated the band with his energy,passion and genuineness. Yet, he has a similar voice to Perry, which marries the old and the new in such seamless fashion, there's got to be divine intervention somewhere there. No one is replacing Perry. On all the albums Perry and Cain did together they BOTH wrote all the songs together, with help from Neal on many as well. The only song Jon wrote completely by himself was Faithfully. I was pretty sure on this, but I just double checked the liner notes on those 4 albums.

I don't think you guys get it. Journey chose Arnel because he has a great voice, not because he's trying to imitate Steve Perry. Steve is a fucking legend. No one can replace him. I just went to see Journey a couple weeks ago on their newest tour. They are touring with Night Ranger and Foreigner. Like it or not, people were walking in en mass halfway through Journey's set. The band, while still great because the band members who are legends, are brought down by a talented man who has gotten too big for his britches, and sings mediocre at best.

@chimneygeorge he's not lip synching...if you listen carefully his accent is there ever so slightly! it's a good thing for his accent so we know for sure it's not lip synching! he's INCREDIBLE!!! another poster said it well...i'd would pay to see just arnel singing all the different songs he sings from various artists and also his own origninals. i'm convinced arnel is one of the best of our time! I saw them a couple days ago in Salt Lake City.....fantastic!!! I sure hope the originals understand what they have with Arnel and don't treat him like a commodity. He sounded great and was an integral part of the band as the rest, if not more.
As far as Steve Perry......people are hanging on to the memory of him from the 80's. Now all you read is how he's turned into a reclusive person with no desire to sing again. Mine by me......Arnel has taken his place and then some.

@149chris Sure! no one can replace an original vocalist, that's for sure. But mind you " IT IS NOT STEVE PERRY!!!" You can't compare both singer. I am a Steve Perry fan and i would ;love for him to sing again for journey, but i don't think its gonna happen. Besides steve, who else from the journey vocalist through the years could ever be close to this good??!!! YEAH!! AHAUH!!! So suck it up cream puff !!!

@149chris-- Free country...that's what Journey decided to do-- good or bad...it's not our business....So you tracked the whole 2011..and you've concluded nobody had listen to them. That tells me what brain you really have. I am appreciating the New Journey, I am glad that they are still around. If you call that judging in my part so be it. I am happy for them-- unlike you!!! @1344790 right around 2 thousand people in the past 3 or so years, drunk college kids and some older married couples all watched at bars. compared to the millions and millions of people back when steve was in his prime. hmmmm. i can promise you there are more people with steve then this new mexican kid
