They've since boarded that up and put camera's there...but it was still so sad to die like he did. Trying to help his community....I walk past it every day on the way to work.
This took place at Astral Close in Hessle. About half a mile away (if not less) at Hessle Train Station, there is a shop called THE DIVE STATION that sell all manor of diving equipment. Surely police could of commedered some equipment. Mike COULD of been saved! RIP MIKE see you on the filp side mate
I knew Mike and only now could bring myself to watch this video. When I heard on the news at th time I didnt realise it was my friend Mike, wish I had known cause I woulda been down there in a flash to support him and agree that more should have been done, but hinesight is a wonderful thing.
Right, where do I start on this. The comments slating the rescuers are disgusting and offensive, they were trying thier very best to save a mans life. We have one of the best emergency services in the world and if they could have got him out they would have. He didn't drown,he died of hypothermia. The twat below who said that they should have ripped up the drain, they would have considered that and there would be a good reason why they didn't. This was a very tragic accident, that's all.
This was in Hessle near Hull, I watched this happen and I was dumbstruck by the hesitant inaction of those around him, this is similar to the Police stopping neighbours rescuing children from a house fire in Lincoln because of health and safety issues, they also died.
i am a drainage contractor and do grid clearence in flood conditions and under stand the suction drains cane have when clearing leaves and rubbish we under stand the dangers and only use forks to clear the grids after watching the video why did the divers not take control and give him a divers mask so he could breath under water if he had to and give him suport about how to yous the mask and not to panice when going under water while they freed him
I dont care what anyone says this man lost his life because of idiotic bureaucracy as usual. Dickheads standing about talking shit. dont want to cause to much damage to the drain dont want him to get a claim. Dont want to hear anyone elses suggestions. Then all of a sudden it was to late and they dont give a shit. That drain should have been ripped up straight away and that poor man would still be alive now. Just because people have high up jobs dont make them the smartest. RIP poor man.
oh btw scottbelton, if they chopped his leg off he would have probibly passed away through water poisoning rather than lose of blood, i think this caME as a shock to the emergancy services and i dont think they were well equiped enough at the time it was only after he died when someone with brains showed up with a JCB TO PULL HIM OUT
do you know summin, its a year on from this event and they still havent done anything with the drain, my gf knew mike who died and i think its disgusting how they havnt evan bothered to fix the drain , what a bunch of tossers, R.I.P Mike i have a lot of respect for you.
I think its typical how people who dont work for the emergency services can easily critise wot happened that day. They did everything in their power to free the man, is just stupid to suggest otherwise. Wot happened that day is a freak incident. The implications are that it would of been less risky to cut away at the drain rather than chop his leg of in which case he would of bled to death in the water in minutes.
I suggest you read the HSE report, he was trapped by his leg upto his groin so it was not possible to cut his leg off. They would have had to cut him in half to free him. It was a tragic accident.
So it's months later and what has happened to the bunch of shysters who let this man down? still collecting their wages until their, "retirement on health grounds," comes through l bet.
As expected, it's now months later and no one has been bought to book. Well l for one haven't forgot, l suppose the bunch of shysters are still collecting their wages until their "retiring on health grounds comes through"
Yeh, I bet they never thought of that! What a crass comment. If you know best then join the fire service and pass on your expertise. As for your idea of someone else jumping into freezing cold, neck high, fast flowing water, please feel free to be first in the queue.
I understand your frustration but it's so easy just to say more should have been done. It would appear they were in an impossible situation. If a rope and a pull was all that was needed he would have been out in a jiffy, clearly it was way more complicated than that with the way he was trapped and the conditions they all faced. As jack4362 says below, take a look at the HSE report and then decide. Lets hope lessons can be learned and such a tragedy never happens again.
it would have been better to get a farmer in, who would have used his common sense and experience in rescuing animals. to stand about talking while a man is dying is unforgivable, l just cannot understand how grown men can let this happen. Mike, l'm so sorry, you were let down by idiots. l will never forgive them. RIP
What a shambles. Priority -QUICK. - Get loads of Hardcore down here, a bull dozer and a big JCB. They can be diverting this water while we're freeing the man. Send another big digger with some chains, couplings-u bolts, Jack hammer etc. This will give us loads of powerful options if needed. Heavy plant machinery and matterials could have been there in no time (it's everywhere). USE THE PHONE, it's URGENT. erm- err -um-oh- too late. Easy in retrospect. Sad.
It seems that the British police and the fire persons are poorly trained. That's why they shoot an innocent man running for the subway, and let a man die after having hours to figure out what to do - when they should have known what to do in advance (from their extensive training that they apparently don't get in Britain). So sad. And now we'll hear excuses from the uh rescuers.
I would not agree that they are poorly trained. I think it's the US style compensation culture. They are scared of being sued. If they had cut his leg off he might have got an infection. It is safer to let him die of hypothermia. The people involved were not the best, but generally our emergency services are bloody good.
On the matter of shooting, well that was not good. I think they are following the US in "shoot first, ask questions later". The US police kill far more innocent people than ours do - in proportion.
With all those supposably well trained police, fireman and medical staff there, the question on everyones mind, especially Mikes dad is WHY!!! Why couldnt they save him? Mike was a sound lad, i knew him from school. He had a heart of gold and would help out anyone! And this is how he was repaid! UNBELIEVABLE!!! My heart goes out to Mikes dad.
Those rescuers is unbeliveble strange. How can a man die in some water ??? So sadly to see a man alive and then dies as his father describe. Tessible effort of the "rescuers" (murderes)
Shocking - absolutely unbelievable - i just cannot get my head around how that could happen like that. It's disgraceful and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves for as long as they live
They've since boarded that up and put camera's there...but it was still so sad to die like he did. Trying to help his community....I walk past it every day on the way to work.

all they needed was a bit of rope and a landy and he'd be alive today.
Makes you wonder why someone else didn't just jump in and do it.
