  • This was my first attempt at making one of these. There are many construction details that could be improved to reduce friction. My wobbly flywheel is one major friction point that slows down the speed here. See the web site for engines that do run faster. Just getting one of these to work is satisfying though.

    What is the heat source?

  • Thanks, the heat is supplied by a can of Sterno (2.6 oz. solid gel ethanol). If you look closely, at some point in the video you can see blue flames coming out from the left of the heat shield (~2:23), and you can see the edge of the can. The "smoke", coming from the drive cylinder, is silicon lubricant (WD40) vaporized by the heat of the engine.
