I really love elevators from the 50's. The black buttons are fun to push, and the floor indicators are just... wow. There was a gorgeous elevator at my library that dated back to the fifties, I'm guessing. The door had to be opened manually with a knob, and the ride was so smooth and graceful. Sadly, the elevator was red tagged and closed due to a rotting wooden floor, and it wasn't fixed because there were other, newer elevators in the building. But I really, really miss the one from the 50's.
The staff elevators at UMC El Paso require ur badge to ride them. Because I volunteer there, i can ride them any time. Ive even taken this girl who got lost one day on them.
So the "ugly florescent lights" and the covering is also a re-doing as well as the floor, but that is still a classic. Even the "Door Open" button is "DO" I remember seeing buttons like that as a kid as well as the UP and Down lamps on the button panel, with UP being green and DOWN being Red. It looks like the UP was burned out.
YAAY I got to ride this!!

I bet this elevator will outlast the ThyssenKrupp by a mile.

Beautiful classic OTIS. The noise that you heard was the door operator.

@jimster586 for some reason it seemed louder that time than all of the other times that it closed

It was. I have a video of an OTIS with a really loud door operator. "The "other" OTIS stacks elevator in Rush Rhees library"
