You dont really need a straightener or products for this style. hairspray is pretty optional [a super small amount of lotion works great] and if you want wavy of hair just braid [or twist] your hair while its damp and once its dry you should have waves you can also just use your hands to scrunch your damp hair to your head and it can create more subtle waves. you can use your hands to straighten your hair too again while its damp. just pulling it down slightly and smoothing it downward. :)

Try to find a video or illustration on French Braids, it's the same thing. Basically you start out with your standard 3 strand braid and then add hair to it from further along as you start to run out.

I think it alternates, and you add hair from one far side and then the other, thus anchoring the braid close to your scalp.
