I think he was in the top 100 most important people in technology ever. I don't think his IQ has been measured but thats probably only because nobody got around to designing a test that would be suitable for someone as intelligent as he is.

John Carmack is among the most intelligent people to have ever lived.

Nvidia actually design their hardware around what JC says it should be like and they consider him to be a genius.

He is also one of only a handful of people to have been initiated into the interactive arts and science hall of fame.

The game industry is just about to give him a lifetime achievement award. Lets hope he doesn't call it a day after that.

I think what's especially amusing about this video is how Carmack states that the aerospace work is rather 'simple' compared to the work he does in video games. Given that he's speaking to a room of rocket scientists and engineers that he's topped in the first stage of this competition, that comment probably stung a little bit, especially coming from someone who works in a field that is largely still considered to be a 'little kid' thing.

that recent Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment by NASA was very inspiring, because it was done on the cheap.
