@ulcerative it makes perfect sense, the black dots are negative/negatively charged, so when the bottom is positive they are attracted to it, which puts the white dots at the top. Using this they would be able to make a surface which looks like paper because it almost is (or is) physically moving and physically in that position (like ink pritned onto paper) whereas with an LCD screen the characters are projected onto the screen from underneath.
