I think Dave Letterman genuinely likes the Black Keys. I can't think of any other artists that I've seen perform on his show come back as many times as they have.
@runlewirun I've noticed this and totally agree with!!! Great song as well! I also like how they put the drummer at the front unlike other bands were they put him/her at the back
this is a genuine rock band, they dont try to imitate anyone, which is why theyre my favorite band around today, they are themselves and dont give a fuck, its awesome to see a genuine rock band these days
@RealBigfootFilms exactly why they're awsome, they've done 6 albums with out being widely famous, and their new album which debatebly got them famous is the same band as the other 6 albums
@TheLimo64 You were too kind to GuilamePaulJones, but that is probably because he is obviously retarded. Pat Carney is Rock God. The best quote I ever read about him is that "He doesn't play the drums he attacks them!" There is no one who plays with more passion and soul than Carney. Rubber Factory is my favorite. But every album is a ode to what it means to be alive.
@GuillamePaulJones DUDE! You surely didn't just diss Pat Carney?! Really man, older TBK stuff is where Pat really shines. When it really was just the two of them (Dan and Pat), that was when they released their best material. Magic Potion is one of the best albums I've ever heard- destroys El Camino tenfold. Not to say El Camino's a bad album, I just prefer earlier Black Keys.
I really like the Black Keys for their good influences. I think this is a true revival of the rock'n'roll, which is good nowadays. But man ! This drummer has no groove, no swing ! Shame...
@fav13andacdc The guitarist and the drummer are the two founding and main members of the band. Pat, (the drummer), is half of the duo know as The Black Keys. That's the reason for his prominent position on stage.
@bigrawb21 The correct lyrics are "Ain't no guarding my high". I don't understand how EVERY website has the wrong lyrics - play rocksmith, the lyrics are right there.
I havent listend to "top ten" music since Nirvana (1993) cause I think for the most part its horrible (couple exceptions) But I like listening to these guys, I really just heard about them this week.
Wait so when Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and The Who were selling out shows and being the biggest bands in the world it was ok. but if TBK become that big there is something wrong with that? Long live Rock n Roll, long live THE BLACK KEYS
After reading a good majority of the comments, I have to ask: why is it that when a band becomes big and they start to reach a large audience, why are they suddenly "sell-outs?" Because they marked their music in ads? That's where I first heard the Black Keys, years ago. I've listened to albums like "The Big Come Up" and "Thickfreakness" and, yes, they are a bit different than their newer stuff. But if you don't progress your style and evolve, then you fade away and no one wants to listen to you
@TransientWriting Well, thanks for the winded reply. You must troll a lot, however, not quite enough. I don't give a crap about any 'treasured top spot'. I think its absolutely stupid to peruse through youTube, happen upon a video, 'listen' to it or at least a part of it, and then take the time to mark dislike LOL But hey.. these are only my lowly opinions, and unfortunately, like everyone else.. their still really good, but they sold out big time! listen to the big come up (their first) and tell me that they didn't sell out. Also, I hate how they advertise themselves as a two man band (which I love) and always have 4 people on stage.
@somenun 1. Would you want to play the same sounding music for years on stage?. No. Most bands evolve their sound over time so THEY can stay interested. 2. They only have the other two guys on stage for songs that are on brothers and el camino because they require extra instrumentation. The rest its just dan and pat. Get it together bro.
@budman8822 I understand bands evolve, but this isn't a good evolution lol. They are pop and are gonna be forgotten in a couple years. I liked the band originally because they were raw garage blues rock. This video doesn't even resemble that at all. And brothers and el camino are their two new albums, so it is likely that they're going to continue having the four man setup. At least give them f*cking credit as being part of the band
Fuck. I used to like these guys a lot more. When they used to be a legitimate 2 man band. When their audience consisted of mostly intelligent people (not a bunch of douchebags who's musical taste includes that of justin bieber and lady gaga). Don't get me wrong, the music the Black Keys are putting out is still amazing, and i'm more than glad that their doing so well for themselves. But man, "Things Ain't Like They Used to Be".
@CaptainTako7 NO, i'm glad that lots of people are listening to their music. but have you seen some of the people who listen to them now? it's just that when i see people who listen to horrible music that's been over-produced with computers, and those same people listen to the black keys.... it just really doesn't make the black keys look good
@altrock17 Who gives a shit who else listens to their songs? Why should you fucking care what their "audience" is? You are the only audience that matters. If you like it, great. If you prefer their earlier stuff, that's fine also. But to let other people's tastes affect how you enjoy the music you love is such a pseudo-hipster indie cliché... Who gives a shit? Seriously, in a lot of ways, "we" indie lovers can be even more blind and "sheep-like" than those much maligned Bieber and Gaga fans...
@quedasobravo i really don't know why you're bringing this "hipster" and indie shit into this. i wasn't even thinking about that and really didn't consider it a part of this conversation until you brought it up. i'm not a sheep, i'm just my own person with my own opinions. actually, i'm on your side. i agree that it is ridiculous to listen to music just so you can fit into a subculture of people. but the only reason a lot of people listen to TBK nowadays is BECAUSE they are popular.
"Sell-out Band" is the best description for the Black Keys. The first music I heard from them? The Molson beer ad here in Canada. My thoughts then? Not bad, for beer commercial music.
Shame me if you want, but there is nothing original, virtuostic, or musically redeeming about this music. Five years from now, all but a handful of you will have forgotten about them, and most who remember will be ashamed of their tastes at this time.
Just started listening to them, good to know they've got that live spark. A lot of bands Just stand about and replicate the songs, other bands are too wild, and a few unfortunatesjust cobble together the right sounds and hope.
This is how you gain a good live reputation - throw yourself into it and strike a balance between quality and carelessness. Hammer it out however the hell you want to, but make sure you're throwing yourself into it and that the crowd gets the songs they want to hear.
@451harri Actually, replicating songs well, makes great original bands. Bands that have a narrow cover song sound, tend to produce narrow results with their originals...
It's true that The Black Keys play their music a bit looser live. It adds to the breathing energy of the music mix.
" throw yourself into it and strike a balance between quality and carelessness" -that doesn't really help explain anything specific....musically. So..... what do you mean?
@bensmethod Not sure what you're on about there either with the narrow results thing there myself, but meh...
...As you said, they play a bit looser live. This adds to the energy. They have room to play around. But if they kept it too loose, it'd sound like crap. I guess that's what I meant by "careless" - they don't seem too bothered about hitting all the right notes, but they're still playing the song we want to hear, they're just having fun with it.
@451harri true, true..Narrow results to me means that a band's original songs sound too much like each other (writing things in same key with same rhythm, melodies) that's one thing that happens when a band only plays what fans think they want to hear....(you were talking about some bands merely replicating themselves. I was speaking specifically about that part.
I've noticed hitting every note isn't as important to people as respecting the vocal melody and feel that they like to sing along with
Wow. That was fantastic. I don't think I've ever seen Dan have that much fun on stage.
