jmramos your right im sorry it is VF-1 and as of me saying 1979 it was a typo I meant 1969 sorry. I built an F-14 model and dedicated it to VF- 94 with the Top Gun Intro on a plackard. I got a lot of props from everyone that was in the service when i put it into the fair and won top Honors. E mail me and ill post pics of it.

Top Gun was created in 1979 to make our pilots the best in the world. Where I live will be the first place in the world to have the F-35 JSF. It's about 180 mile North East of San Diego. I think you can do the math. And if you look closely Gooses helmet and even Mavricks say VF-91. The aircraft also speak for them selves. Look at the Bunno numbers they tell you exactly what aircraft it was and who was flying it that day. Also you can see the squadron markings on the side of the aircraft.

@Tachikoma1991 Actually the VF-1 on Goose's helmet is reference to the navy fighter squadron VF-1, also known as the Wolfpack. If you pay close attention you'll notice the Wolfpack insignia on the Tomcats in Top Gun. The movie is inaccurate in that respect cause the Wolfpack never served on the U.S.S. Enterprise, the ship that was used in the movie.

VF-91 was staitioned at Miramar in San Diego California and was one of the first two squadrons of F-14's in existance. And yes they did serve on the Enterprise from 1974 to about 1980 from 1980 they served on the Ranger then in 1984 the went to the USS Kitty Hawk. They opperated on that ship out of NAS Miramar California till 1993 when the ship was decommissioned. After that the Squadron was removed from commission. Miramar California is where Top Gun was located. And formed.

As to the reference to the movie they are accurate in every way in what it depicts except the T-38's as being mig's. and the F-14 doing the inverted picture taking event that was all movie stuff.If you look at all of the video in the dog fighting sequences, all of that was taken either over the Pacific ocean where San Diego is or over the Chocolate Mountains. These are specific training grounds for Navy pilots. Because these areas are for TOP GUN.

Sweet, sweet childhood memories. I wanted to become a pilot, we saw that film in the 'good old times' at least once per month.
