I remember Lester and Earl coming to my Daddy's Garage in NC when I was a little girl and they sang this song, It has been my favorite song for over 40 years!
Josh Graves has a terrific dobro break for this. Josh starts off with a "thumb rake" which he often uses, & it makes a neat barking sound. Dobro has the advantage of making many more different sounds than other bluegrass instruments.
YES, Order The Best of the Flatt & Scruggs T.V. Show d.v.d.s ...from The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum. You'll get "Salty Dog" in full length and tons of other GREAT Flatt & Scruggs music ! Nice to hear from another bluegrass fan !

My father always said if you knew the slang of the period and of the region this was actually a semi-dirty song. He never explained why though.

I thought the song was called "Ol' Salty Dog Blues?" That's what it's called on The Essential Earl Scruggs.
brnleague99 2 years ago
@brnleague99 Most people just call it "Salty Dog".
