ricerca in meeeeeeeeooooo....ma ti seaeaennnnnnti morir...Gosh what an awful technique...Callas had a BIG voice no doubt, but nevertheless highly controversial...she could wow you in most arias then completely mess up in others...With all due respect to Callas fans of course...
Maria Callas could sing anything and do it better than anyone else without actually having the most beautiful voice. You should hear her in a Master Class at Julliard teaching a young baritone to sing Rigoletto. She actually sings the aria and by golly, she's the best Rigoletto I've ever heard! No kidding, I'm serious!
The problem is not that this is late Callas, but that this aria does not suit her voice at all; it places too much stress on the upper middle register, where she was least comfortable even in her prime. On the other hand, the considerable charm and musicality of her singing make this a rewarding performance (just listen to the appogiaturas; only a singer familiar with Amina and Lucia could hande them so elegantly). Flawed, but impressive none the less.
Callas in 63,difficult year for her, memory lapses and the watery high B shows her limitations at that point..BUT,the phrasing, the musicality, the way of "saying" Puccini's music and text, the unique capacity of presenting the character from the first to the last tone IS UNIQUE, as always.... A musical genius, incomparable, even at the end of her career. Not being able to see WHO she was, only shows ignorance and lucking of musical and operatic education.
@malesoprano88 of course, open your ears and compare to other singer. by the way, i love callas. her expression is incredible, but....the sound is often ugly etc.

Callas, a lot more legend (and a very short one) than reality. Her exagerated fans have created something that´s not real. This recording is ANOTHER tragic demostration.
i am fan of Callas, i dont know why her voice like magic let me fall in her voice and opera world, have many best opera singer in the world but they can not give it like that, so many peoples alway say Callas something bad voice or not on high rage but for me just her open singing her voice would be magic to catch me, maybe it is Big Passion ? i dont know
Pourquoi, mais pourquoi Callas n'a-t-elle pas pu accpeter l'évidence et réorienter sa voix vers des grands mezzo dramatiques? Cela aurait été autre choses mais toujours Callas.
I may say I am a huge fan of Callas and I truly believe she was BY FAR the best opera singer ever recorded. Her Armida, Lucia, Purotani, Norma, Medea and many more are masterpieces of a genius.
But despite the voice wich communicates emotion and tenderness at some points, this is not good.
By 1963 she was yet very good at mezzo roles only (Carmem, Dalilah)
WOW. something must have gone terribly wrong when she performed this because, knowing her work habits, it was very hard for her to make so many mistakes.
I don't notice any bad intonation, it's more the approach to certain notes, but either way, she is a better Mimi, even though both roles are for pretty light voices, her voice is too heavy for Musetta, despite her lightening of it.
as far as I'm concerned, it doesnt matter if she gets words wrong. I don't understand the words anyway. so long as the right notes are hit, she could be humming for all i care. And her voice is beautiful. To think, my mom was 12 when she sang this....
La versione parigina dello stesso 63 è migliore.Voce forse troppo scura, interpretaziopne finissima (valzer della gelosia non brano da salotto).Guizza verso il MI,che alla fine oscilla senza tuttavia dar problemi di tono.
You aint never lied! i have her version on my ipod with Mirella as Mimi. Her tone is so rich and her control is crazy! She mirella compliment each others voices very well. Good comment
What a shallow statement. Have you read any her reliable biography? What the hell did you mean she had been in real life ? Do not consume only gutter press as a source of your information before you post your opinion !
that confidence she had....the way she carried herself....that kinda thing...I can say what I want whether you like it or not...this is meant for us to say what we want...or the comments would be disabled
Thank you sweetaztecangel69 for your explanation, I accept it and am sorry for my missunderstanding. I agree everyone can post his/her own commentary here but should expect a reaction too..... And it does not have to be always consistent. But I assent to your opinion above.
8Micky4, sei 1po' severo!

Callas is the greatest soprano for all the time, she never sang La Boheme on the stage, just some arias records

Although not her best vocally and role wise, but still a notable achievement.
As always full of character, inventive. Great artist.

its so hard to judge the operatic voice because it hides behind vibrato, strip them of vibrato and you have perfection..... in my opinion

I agree with Matt75003. Callas is wonderful, but this aria doesn't suit her coice. Listen to Renee Fleming in the same aria! 56Yeya

Even though I am a Maria devotee through and through, I say Anna Moffo all the way. Maria is too dark here...it's like Tosca, but it shouldn't be...

Contrast the finesse and control of Elisabeth Harwood's version to Callas's. To my ear, Harwood is far superior.

She sang in this concert, verry technique!
Knowing what to do, and on her tops.
Still in great form!
We love La Callas here.
She should have sung MORE mezzo like roles...who knows she lasted longer then.

Although she fudges the lyrics twice (probably few noticed anyway), it's a delight to hear the aria as written. This ditty is not as easy to sing as it may sound, and many sopranos ignore all "the little notes" which Callas executes beautifully. She never sang this opera on stage, but her recording (Anna Moffo is the Musetta) is very moving.

You are right.. she was so musical. And all those little notes add up.. pretty soon you dont have anything that sounds good when you ignore them all.
