I would call it a pseudo-Belarusian folk dance as well as their clothes. It is a good example as denationalized Russian-speaking Belarusians imagine Belarusian folk things. They do not even take the trouble to know their own culture.
@Tytunj Oh shut up you misery guts. There is always one GOBSHITE who has to have his five pence worth. If you want to moan, go and look at yourself in the mirror. You'll have plenty to complain about then.
@MrFrontallobotomy As far as I understand, you have good knowledge of Belarusian folklore and national clothes:))) In this case just say what kind of national garment they wear and what dance is it, ha? But looking at your choice of words I doubt you'll be able. I hate fakes and this is a pure fake under the mask of folk.
@Tytunj It's a few kids dancing for Christ sake!! Get off your high horse and join the real world. Oh, hang on a minute......that girl on the right...her shoes are slighty a different shade of white than the other girls. Right thats it!! Phone the KGB! I want them all arrested and if there are any salt mines in Belarus, I want these mismatched white shoed frauds down them working 15 hours day!
@MrFrontallobotomy I know other kids who understand what they dance. But I could agree that it is not those kids fault, it is fault of their "teachers" (I rather blame them). This piece of dancing is a perfect sample of a window folklore in its worst form. Belarusian culture is reduced to this kind of "folklore" nowadays. You exaggerated with KGB, but KGB exists 'cause people got accustomed to false things from their childhood.
@Tytunj You think this is bad? Imagine how the Irish must have felt when 'Riverdance' was paraded through out the world as genuine Irish culture! American Michael Flatley made a personal fortune of $650 million out of that little scam.
@MrFrontallobotomy These are two different things. We have modern folk developments of different kind (to compare with Riverdance) and one can call them developments. These things appear only when people understand the essence of the culture they try to modernize. Here we have just primitivization. I am not against development! I do not like absolutely artificial things created during the Soviet era to make national cultures primitive! Unfortunately, it is common for the former USSR countries.
@Tytunj primitivization? would you prefer the children dress in black cat suits and the music they danced to played on synthesizers with banks of Marshall amplifers in the background. How about a laser show as well?? Why not just get them to play some Pink Floyd! I thought folk music was primitive and that was its beauty. Earthy grass roots music played by everyday people.
@MrFrontallobotomy you confuse primitivieness with simplicity. Folk things are simple but not primitive while they have sense (in differenc from laser show and cat suits). Just believe me, that kind of "folk" has no earthy grass roots (as you wrote) in Belarus. This style of dancing and clothes was invented in offices of communist folklorists. They invented new fairy-tales, folk songs etc while real stories contradicted their ideology. This is a substitution to make people to forget their roots.
@Tytunj I think, in the interest of world peace we'll just leave it at that shall we? You think it is all Soviet propaganda to belittle the smaller states for the glory of Mother Russia. I thought it was some children in nice frocks dancing about. Silly me. Bye bye.
@omfg83. why?? I apologize, but this is how it is seen from our part of Europe. For comparison: plz hear Romanian, Serbian, Bulgarian folk. I congratulate you if you can make the difference..,.
