@BrianEaZy They have a conductor to collect the fare and check the tickets. They are good at spotting people stepping onto the side. You probably stand a better chance of boarding a Muni bus through the back door without paying, then riding a cable car without paying.
i would love to ride these i have always had fasination for trams since I was a kid when taking a trip to Blackpool I used to think it was the only place world until I saw US tv show
in the UK & saw these cable cars on shows like The Streets Of San Francisco I also later lurned San Francisco has Trams similer to Blackpools railcoach trams silmiler livery in green & cream
These cars cannot stop on the hills or they will snap the brakes from the stress that the steel cable (embedded in the roadway) places on them. Hence they can only stop on the steps to pick up or drop off people.
@Sanosuke004 they can stop on hills, the grip lets go of the cable, how tight it grips it will mean how fast you will go,so to stop you letgo and apply brakes
Riding this on midnight, hanging out of the cable car, with it being quite brisk, with a full moon... a truly remarkable experience. Really makes me think of the Man on the Moon, and that its made of green cheese, while hearing the song 'Mr. Sandman'.
It truly was a out of world experience that I'll never forget.
Well of course fire trucks travel at a much greater speed then cable cars. But yeah, I see you point. According to local media reports, SF cable cars are the single most dangerous form of transportation in the country. Then again ten million people a year ride them, and all but a relatively few have a safe ride.
@an80sGuy If they did not ride like that it would not be San francisco Mate. Rice a Roni it is the San Francisco treat. They should have 2 more cable car lines.
Nice video. I really enjoyed watching it. I am running a marketing campaign to start a large auto detailing chain corporation. Let me know what you think by checking out my channel. Thanks
We're going to San Francisco this August 2009, and I want to know what do u use to ride a trolley, (I'm taking the F Line from my hotel to Fisherman's Wharf) do we need a card or we could just pay when we get into the trolley. BTW if you are from San Francisco plz give me some advice where to go. BTW I'm from New York so I'm very hard to be impressed.. LOL :) Thnx in advance.
I suggest purchasing advanced via Online (do a search for website)...you will like the City...lots to do...the trolley car operators are openly cynical and condescending, mocking all trolley onboarders as "tourists." Also, the trolleys are packed to the brim...you will have no room whatsoever to move (no exaggeraton)...so I suggest riding the bus or renting a car.
The turntables AND the entire cable car itself has nothing to do with economic efficiency and everything to do with history, heritage, artistic design, tourism, amusement.
The system is the oldest cable car mechanism still running to date anywhere in America. It is this which gives all the meaning to the system, unchanged, whether logical or not.
One thing I never understood: why aren't the Powell/Mason/Hyde cars double ended, like the California cars? That would make turntables unnecessary. (Yeah, I know- the turntables ARE cool- but I'd imagine they are expensive to maintain.)
I believe it has do with the fact that they are historical equipment, designed by different companies over a hundred year ago. Cost may have also been a factor when they were built. I'm pretty sure California type Cars would cost more.
Now what I don't understand, is why they don't just connect the ends of the Mason & Hyde lines together to form a loop. That would eliminate two of the three turntables.
I'm 62. When I was a kid everybody riding the cable car got out and helped push the turntable. It was part of the city's charm. Sometime in the 60s riders were forbidden to help: Liability insurance.
I don't think there is a subway system in San Fran. I would tell you never to use a cab in the city unless your in an emergency situation. The means of travel in the city include: streetcars, modern light rail vehicles, diesel buses, alternative fuel vehicles, electric trolley coaches, and cable cars. These are all on the MUNI system. U pay 1, 3, or 7 day pass and you can use them as much as u like. There are some modes of trans. not under MUNI. Check when u get there! Take care!
Nevertheless, this is an awesome video. I lived in SF for four years with my wife; and, thanks to YouTube and folks like the one who posted this video on the web, we can have a look at such stuff whenever we feel homesick.
Would you pay the driver once you get on ? What if i just step onto the side? lol

@BrianEaZy The guy at the back collects the money. But wait until he asks you for the fare. Maybe he didn't notice (fat chance )

Good thing SF stuck with keeping this cable car system unlike L.A. which is now facing daily traffic jams!

Interesting that Car 15, shown in the turntable scene, is now gone, and a BRAND NEW No. 15 has been built to replace it.

and yet these people hang on the side
risking death

@an80sGuy Besides, it probably scares the shit out of people when hanging on the side too, they're probably holding on tight! XD just a thought.

Too bad the conductors are just stupid niggers, they were screaming at a bike messenger for hanging on. Animals!

I walked from the bottom of Powell to the top and that convinced me to buy a pass and use the cable car all the time. The hills are murder!!!!!
