I've skimmed through way too many comments. "I'm so intimidating from behind my keyboard. I know everything about football." Good god, shut up. Post your opinions, but don't be a douche and call everyone who disagrees with you a "retard." Personally, I think Ray Lewis BARLEY edges out Dick Butkus. Do I think Butkus was bad? No. Do I call people who disagree with me retarded? Only if they make as dumb of a remark as "Brian Urlacher is better than Dick Butkus." Both were the best. Deal with it.
Butkus was so good that to talk about who's the greatest all time linebacker, you have to start at number 2, after Dick. He was like a man among boys.
@sonnyj1961 Dude being labed the "most violent" or "most intimidating" or feared does not win games alone. If thats the case, then we might as well say Bill Romanowski was one of the greatest. The greatest players had leadership, motivation, the ablity to step up in big games, etc. Reasons why Lewis and LT are lightyears ahead of him.
@chibears26 Yea its called evolution. The game is constantly evolving and getting harder. So yea in 2040 or whatever, Lewis would probably be to slow, weak, and unathletic to compete with those athletes. But for the moment, Ray Lewis or LT are the greatest of all time for now!
@sonnyj1961 Zach Thomas,Tommy Nobis,Jessie Tuggle,Mike Single Tary,Willie Lanier,Junior Seau,Derrick Thomas,Derrick Brooks,Brian Urlacher,Bryan Cox,Jack Lambert,Harry Carson,Ken Norton Jr.,Hardy Nickelson,Carl Banks,Mike Curtis,Ted Hendricks,London Flecther, hell even in his short career Patrick Willis were or are better than Butkus.
@sonnyj1961 That goes to show you that Butkus couldnt make the players around better like Lewis.Look at the players and coordinaters that played with Lewis, only to fall off or out of the league.Lets just be real about this; Butkus played for a large market that help fueled his status.Had he played for the Cardinals or the Saints,we wouldnt be talking about him. He's overrated. And who cares cause he got defensive player the year against chump competition?
@hitek9wittafulclip - Also, if you researched it, you'd find that the players and coaches of the day (1965-73) called him the most violent and most intimidating player they'd ever seen, and Sports Illustrated in 1970 called him, "The Most Feared Man In the Game". And, he was NFL Defensive Player of the Year on a team that went 1-13. I cannot imagine what he must have done on the field to to get such a high honor on a team that was that bad.
@hitek9wittafulclip - You know very little for someone who claims to be a NFL fan. Butkus and Sayers got drafted during a time of bad Bear drafts, aging players, a coach who stayed WAY past his time, and during a time of great Packer teams and very good teams in Dallas, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Baltimore. No linebacker/running back combo in history would overcome that. They also had very bad QBs during that era. It's stupid to blame the lack of success on those two legendary players.
@gargmel Sure they can, but they are afraid of the consequences of the rules from the game. There is so much restraint on how violent football players can be now a days its sad.
@QBDogKiller No need argue with fools, depite me and you providing evidence that both Sayers and Butkus are vastly overrated. Lol some people have to resort to namecalling and profanity. Not only could Butkus not get to the playoffs but never had a top ten defense. That tells me he cant make his teamates better like Ray Lewis. But, hey if you can clotheline, stomp, grab facemasks, and bite then that make you the greatest LB ever. Lmao
@hitek9wittafulclip You can't be serious. Butkus-Sayers overrated? Vastly overrated? I see you don't get around much..Put Butkus & Lewis in a dirty/shitty pit, I'll take Butkus 7 out of 10 times. The other 3 times Lewis would bring a pistol or shiv. Sayers would make pretzels out of defensive players. I don't want to hear he played in a different 'easier' era. You're a guy who probably thinks Jim Brown was a fluke..
@hitek9wittafulclip Wow! It's funny to read the rantings of people who are generationally myopic to the point where if it didn't happen in their lifetime or before a certain year, it's irrevelent. To say Butkus and Sayers were "vastly overrated" is just plain wrong.
@sonnyj1961 Well like I said. He's overrated. And he was around today he'll be lucky to make the practice squad! He lacks speed, agility, and athletic of linebackers today. I'll he even rank Urlacher ahead of him. Atleast Urlacher got to the Superbowl and made multiple playoffs lol
@hitek9wittafulclip that doesnt make any sense. that would be like saying ray lewis sucks because he will lack speed, agility, and athleticism of future players of the year 2040 and onward.
@hitek9wittafulclip Everything you just said is wrong. And playoffs and super bowl appearances don't have shit to do with a player's ability. Urlacher is 20 levels behind Dick Butkus, Ray Lewis, Lawrence Taylor, Jack Lambert, ect.
@clarify7 Ok if we are just taking about a player's ability, then theres even more linebackers that are better than Butkus and that would make Urlacher 20 levels ahead of Butkus. Lets see, Urlacher has way better coverage skills, way faster, has more agility, is stronger, bigger, certainly more athletic, better leader, etc. How you like that for ability?
The ultimate irony is that Butkus never once played in a post season game yet he's better remembered than most linebackers that won the Super Bowl multiple times.
@QBDogKiller The Bears had terrible offenses in those days. You can only watch clips from the comfort of your own home or office and watch this stuff. Interview players from that era who had to line up against him and you'll feel the true impact he had on the game. You don't need a ring to justify domination.
@QBDogKiller I don't waste my time arguing against ignorance. I could walk circles around you. By the way, using the same argument as your "(explains an argument in full detail)" is pathetic. The art of arguing and logic involves bringing about different arguments, not the same one rehashed over and over. So whenever you're done trying to scoreboard me with your postseason argument and actually think of a new one claiming Butkus wasn't dominant, I'll be here. Oh wait, you don't have one. I win
@jaykia u seem to get very offended by what i said which im sorry u feel that way but talking about the size of my penis wont change the fact that dick butkus wasnt all that... he had terrible coverage skills, often he would get blocked n instead of shedding the tackler he'd start a fight with him....n for the record u r a little bitch n i hope ur son or child grows up n gets raped
@MrGoodojr Yeah. Those terrible coverage skills had him near the top of the interception list during his time. You failed. Better luck next time, thank you for playing.
@PorkFrog Imagine him growing up today with all the hormones within the meat industry, more knowledge on bodybuilding, and better steroids. Guy would have been even scarier.
@DannySportsTalk True. And what about that knee? Better sports medicine today, so he might've had a longer even more brilliant career
the psychology of the guy is probably what pushed him over the top to legend-he supposedly once called a time out at the end of a blowout and when questioned said 'I just want one more shot on that %$^^$#@ 77'
as far as taking a guy out of one era and plugging him into another, it's fun but who knows? I think Butkus would shine in this era also
Butkus has better stats, on average, than LT or Ray Lewis, besides sacks. LT was a better pass rusher, probably the best except maybe Deacon Jones.
They are better conditioned today, for sure. LT could have played his spot 40 years ago, easily. Ray Lewis would be a 210 lb. dude..Maybe like Mike Curtis, but I doubt it.
Oh, you had to win your division to make the playoffs, Raven's don't have a Super Bowl....Of course teams matter too. Ask Jared Allen/AP.
@HawkHerky er year 2001; superbowl xxxv? the defense did most of the work too (as per every single other ravens season I can remember) I'm a ravens fan and a fairly young one at that so I'm always going to say Ray is the GOAT in terms of mlb's but having seen this video I have to say Butkus is an absolute beast and i have no complaints over anyone saying he's better...
@razerspurs When Butkus played, only by winning your division could you make the "playoffs". The year the Raven's won the SB, they did not win their division, IIRC.
Just something to note when comparisons are made. With the Packer Dynasty when the Bears even had a chance, it wasn't going to happen.
A friend of mine played for the Ravens eight years ago. According to him, Ray Lewis was pretty quiet. He said Suggs was the most intimidating guy on the team, bar none.
"A friend of mine played for the Ravens eight years ago. According to him, Ray Lewis was pretty quiet. He said Suggs was the most intimidating guy on the team, bar none."
A friend of mine played for the Bears 50 years ago. According to him, Dick Butkus was not the most intimidating guy on the team. It was Gale Sayers, even though he was nursing injuries all the time.
@QBDogKiller "The "greatest linebacker ever" and one of the "greatest running-backs ever" on the same team, yet they couldn't lead the Bears to a SINGLE playoff run the whole time they were there??? LMAO
These 2 scream "overrated"".
Your buddy think they were both overrated, or did you just make that shit up on your own too?
@razerspurs Check out London Fletcher's stats, years in the league, his trips to the SuperBowl (if that matters) and compare them to Ray Lewis. Then look at his stats for this year.
He didn't get a Pro Bowl bid until Urlacher opted out, despite having a better statistical year than Lewis.
Ray Lewis is a great, HOF ILB, period, but he gets a lot of camera time.
This isn't towards you raz, but more towards those who think Dick Butkus is "overrated".
@HawkHerky I like London Fletcher, but seriously, you cannot look at tackle stats to compare linebackers. London Fletcher might be up there year-to-year in tackles, but thats not a way to judge linebackers. Its like judging a Cornerback by interceptions. Ray Lewis is a level above Fletcher and its not even an argument.
@Mickyjjr "London Fletcher might be up there year-to-year in tackles, but thats not a way to judge linebackers. Its like judging a Cornerback by interceptions. Ray Lewis is a level above Fletcher and its not even an argument."
Sorry man, missed this. What other defensive stats besides Int's is Ray Lewis kicking Fletcher's ass? Last two years? Career?
You're just judging with tackles, or the fact one has played with a lot more HOF talent than the other. That's not even an argument.
Im not going to agrue with people who think a player who played 40 somethin yrs ago are greater than athletes today. Yes in the year 2030 Lewis and LT are not going to be the greatest either. Its really just best to say a player is the greatest of his era because the game constantly evolves. You guys would actually know that if you watched Football and players are bigger, faster,&stronger than Butkus day. Gonna be like that in 2030 too!

Lol Butkus greatest LB?Butkus would get creamed in todays game. He had to go against 250lbs linemen, cover unathletic tightends, hit against small, scrub runningbacks. He shouldnt be mention in the same sentence with Lewis and LT. They actually went to playoffs, won Superbowls, more awards, had yearly top 10 to 5 defences, and played against WAY more advanced players and huge linemen. Butkus wouldnt even make a team today lol.
@hitek9wittafulclip so in the year 2030 then i guess lewis and LT would be shitty sucky players too? right? umm no not really actually, that statement only expresses how much of a dumb stupid ignorant assface you are.
I don't know how people can compare Butkus to anyone. No player nowadays will play the last four seasons of their career with a bone on bone knee condition. Butkus did that. There were no surgical techniques to help him play through the pain, and he still played at a legendary level. He could cover if he needed to and he had probably the best hands that any linebacker has ever had in the game. Faster than Lambert, bigger than Nitschke, and all around better than Ray Lewis. Only LT comes close.
@MrGoodojr In an interview, Ray Lewis said that Dick Butkus was one of the few players he looked up to and admired. You go to Ray Lewis's face and tell him Dick Butkus sucks dick because he will break you in half and shove your small vagina dick in your mouth.
Ray Lewis is great.Dick Butkus was great. I never understood why anyone has to tear down the other to make a point about their personal favorite. Bottom line is a player should never have to apologize for the era he played in. I'm sure the last thing on the mind of Ray Lewis is wondering how the game is going to be played in 2050 and if he'd still dominate. Of course he would. The elites can play in any era.
just imagine butcus coming down the pipe with earl campell accerating right for him. now i would pay to see that. the biggest baddest from both sides.
From Football Hall of Shame @1986,"Dick Butkus was the most blood-thirsty, anti-social, frothing-at-the-mouth monster of mayhem ever to terrorize the gridiron. Whenever he broke up play,it wasn't a tackle but demonstration of what havoc a human can wreck. Said Butkus 'I wouldn't want to hurt anybody deliberately, unless it was important like a league game or something'. Said OJ Simpson,'Butkus doesn't want to hurt you, he wants to kill you'". Can't wait for the replies on that one
"Packer RB Mac Arthur Lane recalls,'Butkus grabbed lower part of my leg & tried to crack it in 1/2 over his knee, like kindling for fire, but he didn't,my leg was too green.'In 1969 preseason at Miami,Butkus was ejected after biting official. Ref Ralph Morcroft was trying to break up brawl started by Butkus,& one of Morcroft's went in too far behind face mask-so Butkus bit it to the bone."Either Butkus is carnivorous or Bears are just not setting the right pre-game meal"
butkus had no offense at all he won defensive player of the year in 69 with 1 win, ray lewis is the most overated player ive ever seen there playing better without him just stfu already dick butkus played when it was a MANS GAME!
@QBDogKiller ur a fucking idiot wow why would rex grossman get his number retired he sucks for one and they only retire good players numbers you have no football knowledge at all dick butkus played when it was a mans game not what its turned into today. he has his number retired at illinois and with the bears he was a stud you haven't even watched a full game with dick butkus so you can't say anything your just watching a highlight film.
@QBDogKiller what are you talking about having your number retired is one of the biggest accomplishments you can have and thats a fact your making yourself sound so stupid. and if you watch the film dick butkus is great idk what your problem is you have no eye for talent.
@QBDogKiller w.e you say man all the great MLBs are just overrated right jack lambert , sam huff , ray nitschke , willie lanier , joe schmidt , chuck bednarik , bill george , mike singletary they all just sucked right.
@QBDogKiller i nvr said you mentioned them you sperm burper no one got owned what you said was so fucking stupid how can you sell out to play the run ? if you see the run your gona come up and stuff it wtf and of course he's top 10 you know nothing about football at all you probably never even played. you don't even know where the C gap is
You never had a teammate that sold out to get after the run and got burned on play-action??? Hummm....so much knowledge for the guy who "played football". LMAO
"you don't even know where the C gap is"
....says the poser who just showed he never played on a real football team. (Madden doesn't count)
@QBDogKiller didn't even answer the question but ok and yea such a big poser wtf? your just a big fat nerd sitting behind a computer thats all with ur gay ass XD bullshit you know nothing about the history of the game your bashing a hall of famer who dominated the game when it was a MANS game.
@QBDogKiller What's "unofficial"? The fact a game tape can't be watched and stats pulled? Speaking of "myths", what are those 1/2 point stats? Assisted tackles 489 to 476. Fumble recoveries 25 versus 19, for starters.
While "unoffical", 18 sacks in one season still sounds less "bullchit" than 4.0 or 3.5; we aren't looking at Jim Thorpe movies...
Lewis wasn't the most intimidating Raven "for most of his career", sherlock. Talk about myths.
@QBDogKiller "You clearly didn't see most of his career. There's no way you would know that."
Its Suggs as far as the Ravens and LB's go. Knowing trumps guessing.
Lewis is much like Singletary, which stands to reason in more ways than one, none bad. Butkus was like Payton was for most of his career; on bad teams.
You never know who's typing on the other side, who they know, what they know; but azzhats like you are as obvious as a hairlip with a moustache: they gotta talk...
@QBDogKiller So you watched Sunday night, and that's as far as your intellect can reach, but the only dumbass here who just typed and "argued" Lewis has been a decrepit 36 year old in the last eight is you. You're a funny chick.
Ray Lewis hasn't been the most intimidating player on his team, for most of his career, but surely the most respected (no myth).
Butkus scared the hell out of everyone, was a turnover machine and played every game like it was his last. No myth, either.
@QBDogKiller More pearls from the know it all ass- "He understands it's more important to stay healthy instead of tying to "prove" something and hurt his team when they need him in the playoffs."
Butkus played everytime the team doctor cleared him; he had to, by contract. A former team lawyer even admitted the team/team doctors had kept him playing, for ticket sales of course.
If you like vaudeville, then Ray Lewis is prolly better....you go girl!
@HawkHerky "Butkus played everytime the team doctor cleared him; he had to, by contract. A former team lawyer even admitted the team/team doctors had kept him playing, for ticket sales of course." WTF??? Show me evidence. Now you're assuming shit happened without facts??? Worse yet, you're implying Ray has been cleared and doesn't want to go out there and play. LMAO! "you go girl!" That's your way to "insult" someone? Maybe you really are a fucking retard... XD
@QBDogKiller The Bears attorney's name is Don Rueben. All the facts are in Court documents. You really don't know schit about anything, but everyone but you knows that. Shit happened all right.... Any of you Bears fans want to waste some time on this idiot?
You also can't read sign for schit; I'm implying Ray is a dancer.....maybe that's how he was hurt?
Cheer up, I'm sure a response to your Massengil survey will arrive in time for Christmas!
@wafflefries921 butkus has 22 interceptions and ray lewis only has 31, butkus only played 9 seasons each with only 14 games, lewis has played 16 seasons each with 16 games. and lewis plays in a passing league when butkus played in a league that ran the ball 80% of the time. had butkus played in a passing league and as many games as lewis he easily would have had well over 50 interceptions
Butkus dominated not just because of his dirty tricks but because of his physical size and quickness, he was as big as an offensive lineman, could shed blockers, had 18 sacks in one season as an mlb and in a 14 game season, had 22 picks in his career in which nobody threw to the middle and not to mention that receivers were basically mugged on every play, ray was a dominant player but was never as dominant as butkus
Yes butkus was dirty, however he did it because of his will to win, he was playing on a horrible team so one way he could energize his team or intimidate the opposition was by starting his own fights or by scaring the snout out of the offense, Ray would probably do the same thing if he could because of his will to win althought he doesn't do it becasue it is illegal although he still tries to taunt the opposition to help and energize his team
why is anyone trying to compare two DIFFERENT players from two DIFFERENT eras of football? I like Lewis and Butkus, I think they both represent the ideal football player. Why can't people just say they are both kickass football players?
butkus had great hands and was extremely quick for his size, I don't know how you can say he was just average against the pass, and ray lewis was never as intimidating as butkus was
"ray lewis was never as intimidating as butkus was"
That's exactly why NFL players ranked him the 4th best player of 2011 when he's clearly on the DOWNSIDE of his career, right??? That shows you how much RESPECT Ray commands in the NFL as a player and a leader.
Butkus got away with a ton of dirty antics which helped out his "tough guy" image that weren't part of the game.
Ray's reputation is a result of his play from whistle to whistle. He's the quintessential MLB.
@QBDogKiller umm.. butkus didn't win a title because he had a really bad team(football is a team sport) and butkus didn't just have an injury that lasted him days or weeks, he played his last 4 years with a bad knee (time when it was difficult to fix injuries) and still dominated, ray lewis probably wouldn't even lasted 10 years at the time butkus was playing
Butkus was fortunate to play when teams ran the ball 60% of the time which played to his strength.
He sold out to get after the run which people don't seem (or want) to realize. Watch the tape.
I give more credit to players who were more complete instead of a guy who was just dominant vs. the run and average vs. the pass.
Ray Lewis is the greatest MLB to play this game. He did EVERYTHING at an extremely high level and he's one of the greatest leaders this league has ever seen.
"I keep reading how Ray Lewis is better... he is not, period. Dick Butkus never sat out 2 games because of a sore toe. I rest my case."
You forgot to mention Ray is sitting out those games in his 16th season, at 36 years old with his team poised to make a playoff run. He understands it's more important to stay healthy instead of tying to "prove" something and hurt his team when they need him in the playoffs. That's one of the many reasons he has a ring and Butkus doesn't.
Yes, Ray understands the importance of staying healthy, as do his coaches, the owners, and team doctors; why that is true today might lead you back to Butkus and that era..pretty neophyte comment.
22 Picks there, pretty high average for not being "his strength".
Lewis is great, but average his stats over 16 with Butkus' 9, plus more games. More "complete"?
"Fortunate" says more about Ray's career in more ways than just the numbers...
"22 Picks there, pretty high average for not being "his strength"."
You're judging his pass defense based on INTs???
LMAO, pretty neophyte comment there.
In that case Kyle Arrington of the Patriots is a great cover corner because he leads the NFL in picks despite the fact that he blows a ton of coverages.
"Fortunate" says more about Ray's career in more ways than just the numbers..."
Work, toughness, leadership and discipline say more about his career than "fortune".
@QBDogKiller A MLB doesn't get 2 plus picks a year just going after runners, like you stated, now does he?
Are you saying Butkus wasn't tough, no coaches or players said he was good, he didn't put another HOF linebacker out of a job, it was all an image and this guy fooled everyone from high school to the HOF? Your spots are showing.
One thing is for sure, Butkus wasn't sidelined by turf toe.
Ray is pretty fortunate to play now; if you can't comprehend that, may your azz continue to show...
Smartest Thing About Butkus Is That He Went After The Ball Carrier. He Got Away From Blockers And Put The Play To An End. He Got Lose Of Your Linemen And Sealed The Hole. And Watch That Interception, Looked More Like A Safety The Way He Followed The QB And The Ball To Make That Turnover.
one of my favorite players even though i am a cowboys fan i wish he could have played in my era. you got to respect a player who played like a loonie makes
Butkus was the defensive MVP in a year when his team won only 1 game. Take a look at a picture of his knees the last few years he played. Honestly its a toss up, but neither of them are close to LT.
Ray Lewis will never be better than Butkus... Butkus played only 9 seasons!!!!! Ray is in his 16th season and you still cant say he is better than Butkus. If Butkus didn't have knee problems he would be highest defensive player on this list...
"Ray is in his 16th season and you still cant say he is better than Butkus. "
You mean Ray Lewis, 2x Defensive Player of the Year? The same Ray that led the greatest defense in NFL history to a super bowl title with Trent Dilfer at QB??? The same one who has played for 16 years despite being one of the most physical players in the league. The same Ray that was ranked #4 for 2011 by his peers despite being on the "downside" of his career???
Look at the numbers 85 bears are clearly the best defense. They allowed 10 points during THREE GAMES IN THE PLAYOFFS LET ME REPEAT THAT 10 POINTS DURING THE PLAYOFFS. Brain Billick the Ravens coach in 2000 said the 85 bears were better. Look at chibears6 comment because im done arguing with a complete idiot.
The other 3 times Lewis would bring a pistol or shiv. Sayers would make pretzels out of defensive players. I don't want to hear he played in a different 'easier' era. You're a guy who probably thinks Jim Brown was a fluke..

@hitek9wittafulclip Wow! It's funny to read the rantings of people who are generationally myopic to the point where if it didn't happen in their lifetime or before a certain year, it's irrevelent. To say Butkus and Sayers were "vastly overrated" is just plain wrong.
sonnyj1961 4 weeks ago 4
@sonnyj1961 Well like I said. He's overrated. And he was around today he'll be lucky to make the practice squad! He lacks speed, agility, and athletic of linebackers today. I'll he even rank Urlacher ahead of him. Atleast Urlacher got to the Superbowl and made multiple playoffs lol
hitek9wittafulclip 1 week ago
@hitek9wittafulclip that doesnt make any sense. that would be like saying ray lewis sucks because he will lack speed, agility, and athleticism of future players of the year 2040 and onward.
chibears26 1 week ago
@hitek9wittafulclip Everything you just said is wrong. And playoffs and super bowl appearances don't have shit to do with a player's ability. Urlacher is 20 levels behind Dick Butkus, Ray Lewis, Lawrence Taylor, Jack Lambert, ect.
clarify7 1 week ago
@clarify7 Ok if we are just taking about a player's ability, then theres even more linebackers that are better than Butkus and that would make Urlacher 20 levels ahead of Butkus. Lets see, Urlacher has way better coverage skills, way faster, has more agility, is stronger, bigger, certainly more athletic, better leader, etc. How you like that for ability?
hitek9wittafulclip 6 days ago
Dick Butkis and Sam Huff should be in the top 5.

@therealmcnulty No doubt Huff was a man. He did have the advantage of playing on a great defense. Butkus really did not.

The ultimate irony is that Butkus never once played in a post season game yet he's better remembered than most linebackers that won the Super Bowl multiple times.

@WatchVenusSpa
No, the ultimate irony is despite being so "dominant" he never once managed to help his team get to the post-season.
QBDogKiller 1 month ago
@QBDogKiller The Bears had terrible offenses in those days. You can only watch clips from the comfort of your own home or office and watch this stuff. Interview players from that era who had to line up against him and you'll feel the true impact he had on the game. You don't need a ring to justify domination.
adamohmg 1 month ago
@adamohmg
"You don't need a ring to justify domination."
Never said anything about a ring.
Butkus and Gale Sayers were so "dominant" they never even managed to get the BEars to the playoffs.
Not a ring, just MAKING the playoffs.
If you have the 10th and 22nd "best players of all time" on the same team and they can't get to the playoffs, there's something wrong there.
It's called being overrated.
But hey, they have their highlight tapes. Good for them.

@QBDogKiller Butkus and Sayers overrated. You sir, are an imbecile.

FACT: They never got the Bears to the playoffs. Not a super bowl, THE PLAYOFFS.

Play more attention to results instead, not everything in life is based on "top-10 most feared hitters" or "top-10 returners" lists.
There's always idiots that get carried away with all the hype.

The art of arguing and logic involves bringing about different arguments, not the same one rehashed over and over. So whenever you're done trying to scoreboard me with your postseason argument and actually think of a new one claiming Butkus wasn't dominant, I'll be here. Oh wait, you don't have one. I win

HawkHerky 2 months ago
@HawkHerky er year 2001; superbowl xxxv? the defense did most of the work too (as per every single other ravens season I can remember) I'm a ravens fan and a fairly young one at that so I'm always going to say Ray is the GOAT in terms of mlb's but having seen this video I have to say Butkus is an absolute beast and i have no complaints over anyone saying he's better...
razerspurs 1 month ago
@razerspurs When Butkus played, only by winning your division could you make the "playoffs". The year the Raven's won the SB, they did not win their division, IIRC.
Just something to note when comparisons are made. With the Packer Dynasty when the Bears even had a chance, it wasn't going to happen.
A friend of mine played for the Ravens eight years ago. According to him, Ray Lewis was pretty quiet. He said Suggs was the most intimidating guy on the team, bar none.

You guys would actually know that if you watched Football and players are bigger, faster,&stronger than Butkus day. Gonna be like that in 2030 too!

He shouldnt be mention in the same sentence with Lewis and LT.

Bottom line is a player should never have to apologize for the era he played in. @QBDogKiller
MrBlazermen 3 months ago
@QBDogKiller

Ray DOMINATED in the '90s and early '2000s when the NFL was still a "man's game".
Teams ran and passed the ball 50-50 during that time and Ray excelled because he was the most complete linebacker to play the game.
Butkus was dominant vs. the run because that's all he had to defend.
Don't ever compare a DOMINANT & COMPLETE player vs. one who only played the run.

QBDogKiller 3 months ago
@QBDogKiller umm.. butkus didn't win a title because he had a really bad team(football is a team sport) and butkus didn't just have an injury that lasted him days or weeks, he played his last 4 years with a bad knee (time when it was difficult to fix injuries) and still dominated, ray lewis probably wouldn't even lasted 10 years at the time butkus was playing

"ray lewis probably wouldn't even lasted 10 years at the time butkus was playing"
That's your argument, "probably"???
Nice try.

I keep reading how Ray Lewis is better... he is not, period. Dick Butkus never sat out 2 games because of a sore toe. I rest my case.

QBDogKiller 3 months ago
@QBDogKiller
Seriously, turf toe on a MLB?
Yes, Ray understands the importance of staying healthy, as do his coaches, the owners, and team doctors; why that is true today might lead you back to Butkus and that era..pretty neophyte comment.
22 Picks there, pretty high average for not being "his strength".
Lewis is great, but average his stats over 16 with Butkus' 9, plus more games. More "complete"?
"Fortunate" says more about Ray's career in more ways than just the numbers...
HawkHerky 3 months ago
"22 Picks there, pretty high average for not being "his strength"."
You're judging his pass defense based on INTs???
LMAO, pretty neophyte comment there.
In that case Kyle Arrington of the Patriots is a great cover corner because he leads the NFL in picks despite the fact that he blows a ton of coverages.
"Fortunate" says more about Ray's career in more ways than just the numbers..."
Work, toughness, leadership and discipline say more about his career than "fortune".
Nice try.

Butkus and Ray Lewis don't play the same game. I doubt Lewis would last 17 seasons when NFL was REAL.

Enough said!!

Butkus was the defensive MVP in a year when his team won only 1 game. Take a look at a picture of his knees the last few years he played. Honestly its a toss up, but neither of them are close to LT.
SonofLiberty79 4 months ago
@SonofLiberty79 I think Dick is pretty close to LT. LT's definatey the best, but Dick's right up there with him.

Lewis > Butkus

@QBDogKiller

@QBDogKiller
By the way they dont depend on Ray they got a guy name Terrel Suggs and they have won every game Ray hasn't played in.
