  • @genefury75 You're right. To me, this is one of the greatest sample sources in Hip Hop. I just love the way It can be utilized into anything you want It to be by bending the pitch or playing about with the arrangements. And of course Its a wonderfully composed song in Itself.

  • If you don't like this song, you need to remove yourself from the fucking Earth. Just go. We have no use for you here.

  • Eternal music...

  • I'm listening to Bob's music since I was a young boy age 13. While my friends were listening to Pink Floyd or Black Sabbath I chose Bob James. I read a lot a Sience Fiction novells with his music in the background. Every time I listen to his music I "see" the stories unfolding again for my eyes. I'm 52 now and still love his remarkable music. There is nothing to compare too ...

  • @M1703 your not only old but a fuck nerd faggot

  • @M1703 As I'm reading my words..:) I'm 52 as well, which means that we're "the same one generation"..I start few years later than you, around my 17 y, but since then, I never stop listening Bob James and other similar musicians..Science fiction..My second 'choice to enjoy..' I saw that you're kind of artist..I'm professional pilot, so that could be a 'proof'' that our music have no boundaries in that way as well..

Sorry on my English, which I know is far from 'Ideal':)

    Greetings-Serbia

    Jovan

  • @M1703 Amen brother, im 50 and I'm there with ya!

  • to this day this remains fucking amazing!!

  • THANK YOU !!!

  • What the hell is that face thing on the album cover? Is it something you put on a door or wall for decoration? Where can I find more info?

I always tell people how like 1000 hip hop songs have sampled from this song (probably a huge overstatement)

  • I've always appreciated Hip Hop, but this is almost better than all of the songs that have sampled it put together.

  • WARNING: Within the next 24 hours Earth will be hit by an interstellar orbal weed from outer space. • If you don't like this video, do not press on that button! It's shame! :)

  • this song is so relaxing

  • San Andreas feeling^^

  • Can someone tell me if they know were I can find the music video to this song and yes Bob James did a music video or at least someone did and I cannot find it.... Its very old skool, it was shot in NYC, South Bronx to be exact.... It was shot in the 70's as far as I know because It had a bunch of kids with afros, subway trains, graffiti, abandoned buildings, etc....

  • @lonnyg773 There were several artists that used the sample. There was a guy from Staten Island who used it for asong called Holy War but there was never a video for it. Then there is an obscure Bronx rapper who used the melody part who had a quote about committing suicide if he was a pork chop.

  • @rakimfan187 you are talking about Sir Ibu if i'm not mistaken.

  • @ASBURYPARK999 Sir Ibu did Holy War but the guy who did Porkchop was a 5 percenter from the BX.

  • @lonnyg773 wow i need to find this video now

  • One of the masterpieces of mankind! I was introduced to this mellow tune by Robert Elms in BBC London who plays this from time to time as the opening tune for his afternoon show. "Westchester Lady" is another masterpiece of mankind!

  • Gangstarr's in the house to get a rep.

  • @casper123 Whats Gangstarr got to do with this? i just sampled this song premo style uploadin it to soundcloud if it interests you. my First sampled beat however ;)

  • 9 People blam Bob James for their cancer.

  • INTRODUCING THE GHOSTFACE KILLAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!! (Ol Dirty Bastards Voice)

  • who sampled this bass line?

  • @andrewcramer13 Ghostface Killah - Daytona 500

  • daytona 500 niggee!!!

  • U really got to give it up for the jazz, yo. U can get twenty different samples from one great jazz record, and they'll ALL turn out dope if u freak it right!

  • I still have albums 1 through 12 and his album with David Sanborn and was playing them today at work. I thought the rap and rock under 25 crowd was gonna freak out but they started trippin when this song came on. They did not know that it was sampled by half of their favorite rip off artists and since I did not know a damn thing about rap I did not know it either. I felt violated ;-)

  • they cant make music like this any more because simon cowel etc tell the "masses" what they should like ! keep it real, all us in real music land know whats real !

  • Why can't they make music like that now

  • His earlier albums were more pure jazz-fusion and less mainstream.

  • Justin yu from the 404 at cnet send me here

  • I have never heard Bob James, this is amazing!

  • @qwertypoiu4321 u typed Turnabout Jazz Soul in btjunkie and found this one?

  • @qwertypoiu4321 ow nothing... that's how i found this :|

  • @qwertypoiu4321 Ditto, just heard of him last night... wow

  • legendary............

  • i'm wearing Nautica right now!!

  • that album cover is SCARY as hell!

  • So many beatmakers used this sample

  • Steph check this joint out.

  • The best hip-hop beat based on this song is My Mind Spray from Jeru, the 10first seconds are so deep

  • Comment removed

  • Smut Peddlers, RUN DMC, and Jeru used different tiny pieces of this somg to make hip-hop classics. Therefore, I would argue that, Bob James, a white, Steven Spielberg lookin' mothafucka, played an invaluable part in defining real hip-hop.

  • This is one of the greatest contemporary jazz albums in the last 40 years. Bob James is mostly known for his song "Angela's Theme", which was the theme song for the TV show "Taxi." PLEASE check out all of the Bob James albums produced by CTI (Creed Taylor - the visionary of modern jazz).

  • The greatest hip-hop sample EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @canibusnj I agree

  • herb mcgruff - keep my palm on the handle

  • So many Hip-Hop producers have sampled this song. Great music!!!

  • Awesome!

  • This is that real stuff, I'm uploading a new beat next week with a subtle nod to Bob James ;)

    Peace!

  • This is heat....Sample used in Ghostface Killah's "Daytona 500". And what kills me is that Ghostface got more views that this, the original. Niggahs refuse to listen to the real.

  • @escoo34 mad heads used this, jam master jay was the first big name to use it for "peter piper"and i think 9th wonder was the most recent with "the end" off a murs album called murryas revenge

  • This is heat....Sample used in Ghostface Killah's "Daytona 500"

  • Big L- Let em have it L right from the start

  • Rappers are not musicians, they're poets who usually use other people's music behind them. A songwriter comes up with a melody to their words. Rappers just speak with a rhythm.

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit take the music war elsewhere

  • @somenoobz ???

  • oh wow, what an amazing artist this man Bob James is..

  • What's up with the image?? anyone?

Love this song and artist (L)

  • Woooohoooooooo

  • Nice tune and Rhodes playing Bob!

  • Sunday midnight. I woke up at 9 pm after a bad party. Too many drinks. Now I'm listening this song since one hour in repeat. And always when I listen a song in repeat it means that it is a very good song with some subliminal elements that make it flow like water. This musician is not a musician, he's a poet. You hear all the instruments and moods switching and flutter and follow each other. It's like a movie, a journey. It's truly amazing. Yes music is an universal language. Thank you Bob James.

  • @wwwMocciosoCom couldn't have said it better. this song is magic.

  • @wwwMocciosoCom totally agree..thank you Bob James

  • Murs and 9th Wonder from 0:50 to 1:00

  • "Beats To The Rhyme" by RUN-DMC, "Children's Story" by Slick Rick, "Follow The Leader" "Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em" by Eric B. & Rakim, "Daytona 500" by Ghostface Killah, "My Mind Spray" by Jeru The Damaja, "Job Song" by Consequence, "Murray's Revenge" by MURS "Take It Back" by the Wu-Tang Clan the video for the Mary J. Blige track "Deep Inside" contains an interlude which samples the song. It is in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the radio station Mastersounds.

  • This was the begining of what was called fusion Jazz!

  • out cold.

  • 3:33 - Mary J Blige feat DMX & Nas "Sincerity"

  • i dont even know how many times 3:32 has been sampled...

  • FSOL - Papa New Guinea :)

  • This was also used by Eric B & Rakim "Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em"

    and King Son's "Big Shots"

  • Ok a lot of rappers sempled Bob James,But Guru Worked with him :)

  • Jazz is a genre of music, incorporating melody , harmony and dissonance.. Hip Hop/ Rap is a vocal and rhythmic expression , where true music is sampled and served as a background for the rap.

  • I really love this song ... somehow it reminds me of the music that i heared on the show Hey Arnold when i was a kid .. are there similar songs which have this piano based jazz with violines ?

  • tim dog

  • murs - murrays revenge (9th wonder)

keith murray - the rhyme remix (j dilla)

too many to list em all

  • Oh Yeah....also 3:32 to 3:40...there's sample piece of this song used to make the Hip Hop soul masterpiece....SENCERITY...by Mary J Blige from her 2001 LP....

    Mary (Special Edition)

  • Rakim-Follow the Leader

  • Mic is on Fire - Lakim Shabazz

  • So many classic from this one track. Wow.

  • don't forget "follow the leader"- rahkim, eric B

  • @daywalker48603 sorry! I misspoke! "let the rythmn hit 'em" by Eric B and Rakim.

  • Ghetto boys. "I hate that snitch" ...from "Making Trouble" 1988

  • @3Sedici Good additions - although "Victory" didn't sample this Bob James record. The sample from "Victory" comes from Bill Conti's song "Going the Distance" from the Rocky soundtrack. Puffy & Stevie J. used a HUGE chunk of that record for "Victory" - search YouTube under that song title & hear for yourself!

Oh, & I don't think Slick Rick used "Nautilus" for his "Children's Story" - I'm thinking he and Vance Wright made it from scratch - no sampling. I could be wrong, though.
