  • i found it very graceful. thank you!

  • @AvelarMusica thank you too...

  • Could someone tell me which cadenza this is? I know I've heard it before, and I can't find it.

  • 06:00 what is that noise?

  • really bravo the violist!! very good!

  • is it just me, or is the tuning terrible? and to those who think one should play it first, i don't care! why perform if it's not done right?

  • @humbertsin1994 what in the hell are you talking about? the tuning is correct. listen to a bunch of different versions. it correct. and why perform? because if youre so quick to criticise you must know how to play it better. if you cant, shut up. :)

  • @46anna1995 ..thanks

  • @46anna1995

    1. his tuning is bad. that's a fact. being in tune is about being in tune in relationship with the other notes you play. for a fact, his intonation is bad.

    2. that's an illogical point you produce. most music critics may not play better, but they know how to critique. it's like telling a sommelier to go make wine better than a wine he criticizes. sound rational to you??

  • ya i didn't take that into consideration, well put

  • I'm studying this as well....

well done, very charismatic and brilliant performance. I really don't feel lack of tuning, maybe a few times, but hey, this is live, not a CD! Neither Bashmet or Zimmermann play perfectly in tune when they play live. And to who says that your 16ths are not hearable, let's remember that this a camera's mike and not a mike put under there, so it's perfectly normal.

    Very good effort indeed.

  • not bad but i have played this peace better and i'm in 9th grade

  • Wow, I'm playing this piece, and I hope with practice, I will be able to play it this well!

  • i feel like this guy was originally trained as a violinist, just because even though he sounds good, hi technique doesn't seem to completely mesh with the viola the way i feel like it should. Good playing, but maybe brushing up on basic viola technique would help.

  • Beautiful playing! Often in the 16th-note passages I get the impression that, while I can tell you played every note, I didn't hear any of them. Try to achieve the level of clarity you have in your melodic playing with your flashier passages.

  • good good

  • very well my friend

  • i'm really not a fan of this piece at all. but well played all the same!

  • i really enjoyed the cadenza.

and the performance of the first movement was fantastic, with a lot of sincere experession and musicality.

of course, some of the double-stops weren't in tune but it was an excellent performance.

I'm doing a competition on this in a vcouple of weeks :]

    buena cadenza.........

  • Very average playing...:( and the octaves ain't nothing hard really, considering you hav some technic skills...

  • I think they must be pretty tricky! Considering how he has to sustain them for quite a long time!

  • I need to know who wrote this cadenza, help!

  • i've never heard it, but this is one of the few that the composer leaves all the cadenza for the artist to, quite literally, improvise. I use the International version's cadenza, personally, and i am playing on the urtext version of the Stamitz. The international version is not nearly as long as this; its around a page.

    Hope this helps:P

  • im learning the same song right now. i must say, nice job!!

  • It was pretty good but I also play the Viola and where is the energy man.

  • Candenza by zelter????

  • no, some cadenzas that are played nowadays have current authors...

  • if you would just use more bow your playing would be about 20% better. In general less vertical and more horizontal motion in the bow. Like you pulling the sound out and pushing it out in the hall.

  • how come nobody writes there own cadenza's anymore?

  • That's kind of... a really hard piece. Poor viola players! anyways, here in Norway we have a "viola joke" going something like this: "What's the best recording of Stamitzs viola concerto?" The answer is simple: "The one without the viola." I'm not trying to be negative to anyone, it's just a joke we have over here =) Really good recording, by the way. A little bit out of tune, and a few "squeaks" here and there but otherwise it's really good =) keep it up.

  • There are some pretty funny viola jokes out there, but that one isn't one of them.

  • Actually, it is, in Norway. Maybe it's not understandable in english, but it's actually funny in Norwegian. Maybe the english words lacks the aspects norwegian words has, but anyways. I actually said here in Norway we got it ;)

  • gah! i've never heard a viola concerto before! (i play violin, hehe.) this is awesome!

  • heh, then find a video with Telemann's viola concerto in G major. That's like the best one.

  • hey luckily people who arn't musicians dont hear our mistakes. True?

  • Is he playing out of tune or is it low quality of recording?

  • i think he's out of tune, because the orchestra sounds fine in the background. I'm working on this piece now, and was hoping for a good recording; guess I'll have to look else where. That 7th position slide at around 1 minute is a monster... even this guy missed it

  • ah tell me about it!!!!! those octives are are suck a friggen pain! i have to perform this in 2 weeks and that is the only part that is giving me trouble lol

  • honestly, i am STILL practicing this piece for college auditions and my first live performance in 3 weeks. The octaves on the final page took me the most time as well. Take the octaves slow and if you miss a pitch go back and fix it until you can play it perfectly separate. The best thing i can say is make sure it's flowing and make it seem easier than it really is. same with the part around 1 min. Hope this helps; I'm polishing my Cadenza at the moment and its a mad dash till the 16th :P

  • You also have to consider register issues when it comes to playing in higher positions on the lower strings.

  • No wonder major soloists don't perform this...It is killer! It makes great musicians sound like a youth concerto competition.

  • all string music from this music period is killer! i am a cellist and some of the hardest concertos i've played are by Boccherini, Haydn and others.

  • I'm performing this in a week and it's really rocky! Luckily it's the only classical piece on the program... Thank god for Brahms and Hindemith

  • why is this only 3.5 stars?

what was wrong with his performance that made people give him that rating?

  • because people are douchebags.

  • well played!!

  • kim bu calan yaw? neresi burasi? hangi okul orkestrasi?

  • Para TRISKINIKI :Habría que verte a ti tocando esto...

  • it reminds mee of a variation of the hoffmiester

  • naum entendo nada disso mais gostei do som da viola...

  • Eres un paquete

  • Hmmm... he actually plays this concerto very well. I'm playing this concerto and it's not deep, emotional or striking, but it can be beautiful and it is very difficult. He pulled much of it off better than I can.

I do have to say, I think I play a better cadenza.

  • Yeah, I'm not too excited about the conductor. He...or she...which ever...doesn't seem very grounded...and seems to take away from the soloist a little bit. I just had to throw in that tidbit.

  • very good:)

  • thumbs up!

and to those who are quick to criticise, play it yourself first, then start throwing mudd at others. i`ve performed it quite a few times with orchestra and it`s a hard piece.

    Good job,Nesrin Bayramogullari!

  • my friend's old teacher referred to the stamitz as technically difficult but musically cheesy. And that it is. the hoffmeister is more musical. but neway, kudos Nesrin!

  • Yup. My teacher said the same thing. Except she referred to it as "hammy" and "not deep" but fun.

  • considering both words, the stamitz is a sandwich.lol. sorry...lame joke

  • Cheesiness has always struck me as an interesting point of debate in music - I have always thought of this piece as pleasantly melodic, but I know many violists that abhor this piece on the grounds of its cheesiness. On the other hand, I've always found Lalo Sym. Espagnol to be contrived, but some enjoy its sultry tunefulness. I can see both sides of the debate with a variety of pieces.

  • What! Lalo Sym. Espagnol is definitely not contrived...I love the piece. And as for this piece being a little cheezy, I guess I can see that, but those people must think Mozart is cheezy too. I find this piece simple and enjoyable.

  • o sadece alevden cevherini etrafa dağıtıyordu

    Huzur A.H.Tanpınar

  • Lorsque l'on manque d'inspiration,c'est à monsieur Stamitz qu'il s'adresser...

  • The conductor is hilarious to watch. I can't see his face but I can't help but imagining it to be Mike Meyers.

  • To all the "intonation" comments. If you are used to hearing Violas perform, you know it's not uncommon. Often there are two sets of intonation One is the launching note and the other is the range of deflection. Managing deflection requires unbelievable virtuosity that Violinsts have never dreamed of. DON"T USE GUT STRINGS FOR A CONCERTO!

  • please??

  • i'm studying this concert..i play the italian editure..this is the german one ...it's harder :D

  • You are a very talanted viola player! i like your sound... of course, the intonation goes wrong at times and the rythm, too.. but in the end i really like it (oops, without the cadenza, sorry..):o))

  • Boy your intonation sucks!!!!!!!!!!and the cadenza.....i hope you invented it because it's the worst thing i've ever heard!! my god!!

  • leute es ist natürlich nicht perfekt aber mach es besser und dann ziegt es....

  • Ich spiele mit Bruno Giuranna und deines orchestra....bye bye.....

  • und ich mit Mincho Minchev ... wünsche dier viel glük ...

  • I prefer how u played the 3rd movement...but still...Buon lavoro!work hard.

  • danke

  • personally i think his cadenza is terrible

  • I would like to know which cadenza is this one? I like it very much!

  • i can't stand his playing.

  • Somebody know where i cn find the first movement of the the Joseph´s Schubert concert on video????Thanks...

  • I'd just played this concert.... and with this concert i'd got in the music college. I love Stamitz... but I was playind a different cadenza.

  • i love this person's interpretation

  • I think it's a very acceptable performance. Sure the intonation isn't perfect, but the performance is good. And I don't think it's fair to complain about Stamitz's compositions. He had to LIVE UP to Mozart, who was popular when he was composing.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawful.........how sad for violists everywhere who is this guy?

  • How about you post a video of yourself playing it?

  • If Stamitz was in my composition class I would flunk him. Thered are much better imatations of Mozart that this piece. The playing had poor intonation and lousy bow technique. Why is it a violinist believes he has a permit to play with poor intonation as soon as you put a viola in his hand?

  • "If Stamitz was in my composition class I would flunk him." I'd like to see you write a better viola concerto

  • I am not the only person who thinks this piece is crap. If there were more viola pieces to play, I doubt this one would ever be played.

  • It doesn't matter if some other idiots agree with you. This piece doesn't compare to other pieces written for viola such as the Walton concerto, but for a classical era concerto it is still a great piece.

  • I always considered this piece a "stepping stone", the kind of piece that a student HAS to learn but once you do, you move on. I don't know if it's "crap", but I agree that if there were more pieces, this one would be forgotten.

  • I like this piece.

  • This the a one of the better difficult viola concertos.Who wrote the cadenza??Stamitz wrote old the concert.

  • Very good!

  • Unfortunately I don't like his playing ... I Heard much better than that

  • OMG he's playing MY CADENZA!!!

  • Well, not every note of it... I'm sure it's his, but it sounds an AWFUL lot like mine, which I wrote in the late 1970s...:)

  • the very most bigger problem whit the musician, specially whit bowed instruments, are the expression, the feeling and the dynamicals, and more sound more sound, until the viola explodes

  • lmao "the very most bigger", that's probably the worst grammar I've ever heard.

  • AbsoluteZ3RO is stupid. Just look at his name, "the very most bigger" is perfect grammar. He's probably one of those really out of tune viola players.

  • sizi 1. geleneksel İzmir uluslararası viyola yarışmasında izledim diye hatırlıyorum. Doğru mu hatırlıyorum? Tebrikler bu arada!

  • I love this concerto and this interpretation is very good ! What I don´t like so much is cadenza played here, it´s too long and little bit boring. I prefer Clemens Mevers´s beautiful cadenza, which is also closer to the spirit of the concerto.

  • there ARE differences between playing violin and viola. lol. (they say violinists who "can't" play viola and i think that is SHYTE--what makes them think they'll be good at viola? viola is not as "forgiving" as violin...)

this player is very good... much better than the other violists that have been posting vids here... I just am not gutsy enough to post on those :P

  • I remember when I played that snr year H.S. It is my favorite concerto so far.

  • this is really good insperation. since i am playing it

  • So what is considered more difficult, this or the hoffmeister concerto?

  • They are both great(or close as it is going to get) classical viola concertos. I would say the Stamitz has more difficult passage work in general. The Hoffmeister also has some hard double stops.

  • this guy's pretty good, but the intonation is a bit crazy. technique is pretty good otherwise. i LOVE the big sneeze around the 6 minute marker! overall, i think this is played pretty well, but the soloist is unable to master some very basic intonation.

  • That´s funny :) I mean, the comparison to Zuckermann :)

    That´s just a different level...

Anyhow, the performance is quite good, you can really handle this piece and make it sound very nice, although it´s not an easy one, when it comes to expression.

You´d maybe want to take care of the right elbow, would help getting rid of scratchy tones, just as following a more consistent frazing and intonation.

Otherwise, a nice player, all the best!

  • My school's orchestra is planning to play this same piece this month. I love this song.

  • It is a good performance but I dont really understand where his phrasing goes in the cadenza. I like his tone, and there is no doubt he is a wonderful player.

  • Although I like zukerman's viola playing(I have a recording of him with harrell and perlman), he is one of those successful violinist who can take away attention from aspiring viola soloists by playing works such as the stamitz in a concert.

  • Not EVEN close to Zukerman's performance.

  • actually, right about this tempo is my normal tempo.

  • nice brisk tempo...

    anyone take it slower/faster??

  • very nice performance of stamitz!!

  • He is genius , beatiful tone and incredible technics....

  • love the sound of the viola!! This interpretation was great.I'm getting ready to perform this for a concerto competition and now i'm sad cause i can't play this anything like him.

  • hey great concerto! who wrote the cadenza for this?
