@humbertsin1994 what in the hell are you talking about? the tuning is correct. listen to a bunch of different versions. it correct. and why perform? because if youre so quick to criticise you must know how to play it better. if you cant, shut up. :)
1. his tuning is bad. that's a fact. being in tune is about being in tune in relationship with the other notes you play. for a fact, his intonation is bad.
2. that's an illogical point you produce. most music critics may not play better, but they know how to critique. it's like telling a sommelier to go make wine better than a wine he criticizes. sound rational to you??
well done, very charismatic and brilliant performance. I really don't feel lack of tuning, maybe a few times, but hey, this is live, not a CD! Neither Bashmet or Zimmermann play perfectly in tune when they play live. And to who says that your 16ths are not hearable, let's remember that this a camera's mike and not a mike put under there, so it's perfectly normal.
i feel like this guy was originally trained as a violinist, just because even though he sounds good, hi technique doesn't seem to completely mesh with the viola the way i feel like it should. Good playing, but maybe brushing up on basic viola technique would help.
Beautiful playing! Often in the 16th-note passages I get the impression that, while I can tell you played every note, I didn't hear any of them. Try to achieve the level of clarity you have in your melodic playing with your flashier passages.
i've never heard it, but this is one of the few that the composer leaves all the cadenza for the artist to, quite literally, improvise. I use the International version's cadenza, personally, and i am playing on the urtext version of the Stamitz. The international version is not nearly as long as this; its around a page.
if you would just use more bow your playing would be about 20% better. In general less vertical and more horizontal motion in the bow. Like you pulling the sound out and pushing it out in the hall.
That's kind of... a really hard piece. Poor viola players! anyways, here in Norway we have a "viola joke" going something like this: "What's the best recording of Stamitzs viola concerto?" The answer is simple: "The one without the viola." I'm not trying to be negative to anyone, it's just a joke we have over here =) Really good recording, by the way. A little bit out of tune, and a few "squeaks" here and there but otherwise it's really good =) keep it up.
Actually, it is, in Norway. Maybe it's not understandable in english, but it's actually funny in Norwegian. Maybe the english words lacks the aspects norwegian words has, but anyways. I actually said here in Norway we got it ;)
i think he's out of tune, because the orchestra sounds fine in the background. I'm working on this piece now, and was hoping for a good recording; guess I'll have to look else where. That 7th position slide at around 1 minute is a monster... even this guy missed it
ah tell me about it!!!!! those octives are are suck a friggen pain! i have to perform this in 2 weeks and that is the only part that is giving me trouble lol
honestly, i am STILL practicing this piece for college auditions and my first live performance in 3 weeks. The octaves on the final page took me the most time as well. Take the octaves slow and if you miss a pitch go back and fix it until you can play it perfectly separate. The best thing i can say is make sure it's flowing and make it seem easier than it really is. same with the part around 1 min. Hope this helps; I'm polishing my Cadenza at the moment and its a mad dash till the 16th :P
Hmmm... he actually plays this concerto very well. I'm playing this concerto and it's not deep, emotional or striking, but it can be beautiful and it is very difficult. He pulled much of it off better than I can.
I do have to say, I think I play a better cadenza.
Yeah, I'm not too excited about the conductor. He...or she...which ever...doesn't seem very grounded...and seems to take away from the soloist a little bit. I just had to throw in that tidbit.
and to those who are quick to criticise, play it yourself first, then start throwing mudd at others. i`ve performed it quite a few times with orchestra and it`s a hard piece.
my friend's old teacher referred to the stamitz as technically difficult but musically cheesy. And that it is. the hoffmeister is more musical. but neway, kudos Nesrin!
Cheesiness has always struck me as an interesting point of debate in music - I have always thought of this piece as pleasantly melodic, but I know many violists that abhor this piece on the grounds of its cheesiness. On the other hand, I've always found Lalo Sym. Espagnol to be contrived, but some enjoy its sultry tunefulness. I can see both sides of the debate with a variety of pieces.
What! Lalo Sym. Espagnol is definitely not contrived...I love the piece. And as for this piece being a little cheezy, I guess I can see that, but those people must think Mozart is cheezy too. I find this piece simple and enjoyable.
To all the "intonation" comments. If you are used to hearing Violas perform, you know it's not uncommon. Often there are two sets of intonation One is the launching note and the other is the range of deflection. Managing deflection requires unbelievable virtuosity that Violinsts have never dreamed of. DON"T USE GUT STRINGS FOR A CONCERTO!
You are a very talanted viola player! i like your sound... of course, the intonation goes wrong at times and the rythm, too.. but in the end i really like it (oops, without the cadenza, sorry..):o))
I think it's a very acceptable performance. Sure the intonation isn't perfect, but the performance is good. And I don't think it's fair to complain about Stamitz's compositions. He had to LIVE UP to Mozart, who was popular when he was composing.

I love this concerto and this interpretation is very good ! What I don´t like so much is cadenza played here, it´s too long and little bit boring. I prefer Clemens Mevers´s beautiful cadenza, which is also closer to the spirit of the concerto.
there ARE differences between playing violin and viola. lol. (they say violinists who "can't" play viola and i think that is SHYTE--what makes them think they'll be good at viola? viola is not as "forgiving" as violin...)
this player is very good... much better than the other violists that have been posting vids here... I just am not gutsy enough to post on those :P
They are both great(or close as it is going to get) classical viola concertos. I would say the Stamitz has more difficult passage work in general. The Hoffmeister also has some hard double stops.
this guy's pretty good, but the intonation is a bit crazy. technique is pretty good otherwise. i LOVE the big sneeze around the 6 minute marker! overall, i think this is played pretty well, but the soloist is unable to master some very basic intonation.
That´s funny :) I mean, the comparison to Zuckermann :)
