  • "GENius"

  • The four of them are so good together. Deakin come back!

  • @alvids333 he already has! They played at pitchfork festival last summer and are currently recording a new album.

  • @TheTurtleDucks Huh good point. Love that series. I listened to Explosions in the Sky All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone while reading The Hunger Games. It was pretty much amazing.

  • I was reading the hunger games when I first heard this, so this song always reminds me of the emotional aspect of the hunger games

  • Panda Bear>Geologist>Avey Tare>Deakin I love all of them though :D

  • greatest live recordinng ever!!!

  • So much fun to play this song on drums! 7 is a fun time signature ;D

  • Their best live

  • fucking hell this is incredible

  • This song always makes me want to scream my head off, laugh hysterically, and cry my eyes out all at once. The result ends up as an extremely strange noise, if you were wondering. :)

  • Anyone know where to a better quality version of the song done this way?

  • EVERY SINGLE LIVE SONG IS GOLD. I love their live versions better than the album ones.

  • In my opinion, this band is the best of the 00's. Their ability to express themselves reflects on our slowly growing acceptance of contemporary art forms, and their lyrics are inspirational while barely making sense to most people.

  • Avey's screams. 1:57

this is perfect. Wish they played For Reverend Green in Brooklyn this summer, but still amazing either way. :)

  • so great live!

  • Hey guys, I'm here researching music. A lot of people love this band, and a lot of people don't. Can anybody give me their personal reason why AC is one of their-if not their only- favorite band. Thanks, I greatly appreciate it.

  • @MissingNumberOne Because it's supportive of the idea of creating something different. And their music creates certain emotions in me that make me feel really good, it's like a nostalgic feeling without the memories.

  • @MissingNumberOne My reason is that their music is literally pure expression. They are one of the only bands i have ever come across that are bound by nothing, this is evident in the fluent yet startling transitions of sounds between their albums. In ten years this band has explored and raised the bar for more genres then more or less any musical acts will explore in a lifetime! Also they demostrate a refreshing attitude to the music industry in this warped era of it choosing to be involved...

  • @MissingNumberOne ...Only in what they please; Sometimes its just Avey Tare and Panda Bear, sometimes its all of them, they do not let the industry or their label tell them what they have to get enthusiastic about. My theory on why some people hate this band is the same as to why people say they hate Jazz. simply they have heard the wrong piece at the wrong time, you cannot say you hate all jazz as there is so much in it to explore and the same with this band.

  • @NeilMcGuiness i think the reason most people don't really dig there stuff is because they don't give it much of a chance... if they don't like it the first time they hear it then they don't like it at all... i know personally it took me a while to get into their older stuff and now spirit (their debut album if you didn't know, which i hope you do) is like one of my favorites by them

  • @VulpinFoxyFinnland I agree, yeah i very much enjoy Spirit They've Gone. It's a real gift to yourself if you really give their wealth of material a real chance as with each album you get a completely new experience and way of thinking as i'm sure you know. That's why i wish more people gave them a good listen.

  • @NeilMcGuiness like obviously it wouldn't be the easiest to start out with that record, but for me it's easier to get into that than hollinn, danse, or even indian

  • @MissingNumberOne Start with "Merriweather Post Pavilion" and you'll see they have a lot in common with 60's psychedelic pop, while also blending newer electronic music and creating a perfected, trippy, layered masterpiece. To me, they have revitalized psychedelic music.

Then go backwards from there. At least that's what I'm doing. haha

Merriweather remains my favourite, because I can connect the most to its lyrics, but it wouldn't be fair if I only listened to one album. It's all good really.

  • Now this is what I call the

    JAM

    of a lifetime.

  • @tyster23 YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

  • I wish this audio footage was louder.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=25dVNSDFuK8

    brother sport remix

  • the drums in this song continue to trip me out. it starts to fall behind in the 2 bar because the song is in 7/4 time, and the drums are in 4/2, and 7 isnt divisible by 2, but 14 is divisible by 2! so it restarts after the second bar :O im sure this sounds ridiculous though..

  • Comment removed

  • @keyblader118 I love that someone else other than me has noticed that! In every first bar its on the beat and every other bar is offbeat. Fucking genius!

  • aaaaaaahhhhhh sooooo fucking good!

  • he has better vocals

  • this is the greatest live performance ever!!!

  • @torchwoodlurve1 they were! look up videos "animal collective @ the beacham" ;D

  • i think i am slightly gay for panda bear and his drumming. definitely my favorite drummer.

  • this they are tripping hard core man

  • im seeing them in 4 days! envy me! bwaaahahahahahaa

  • this band has such an original sound

  • Personally, gonna be honest.... I think its a total riot.

  • Does anyone know what kind of guitar deacon is playing? X

  • Panda Bear rocked the brushes so fucking hard on Spirit, I wish he'd keep that shit up.

  • @IHeartKimP Maybe? It depends on the other music and on whether I ever hear it.

  • i get WAY to into this, almost to the point where i start tearing up.

  • @GalacticalJive I know exactly what you mean man. I completely destroy my lungs singing it and then completely break down crying to it.

If I absolutely had to pick my favorite AC song it'd probably be this one and then Fireworks because they are technically the same song :)

  • @Anders898Avey i agree with you 110%

  • there are no offical lyrics for that break right after the "hey yea girl" part.

they're not in the cd fold, i can't find any offical lyrics online, and they don't sing that part live (except for "Running Child!!!"). it's almost like you're suposed to interpret whatever applies to you.

that's kinda what i like about AnCo, no song has just 1 meaning, or one way of looking at it.

  • Alright. Officially best live performance of Animal Collective so far. :)

  • @lfrocha95

    progressive dreamfunk.

  • Strawberry jam is one of my favorite new albums.

  • avey tares next album should be called "hats"

  • Great song!!! Anybody else notice Avey chokes on his water at 6:33?

No biggie bro you just shredded your vocal chords.

  • lol

  • this is probably the best performance of this song ive seen them play.

  • Now this is music!

  • 20 people just can't take in the awesome that is Avey's hat.

  • His screams. I miss them. A lot.

  • What genre would you consider animal collective?

  • @lfrocha95 Post-intercourse.

  • @lfrocha95 They have there own genre ha

  • @lfrocha95 experimental rock is the most common genre name for this

  • Strawberry Jam is the best!

  • I started listening to Animal Collective with Merriweather Post Pavilion cause I heard it was the easiest to listen to but I find myself listening more to Feels and Strawberry Jam. I dunno but methinks those are their best albums

  • animal collective is a bamf

  • how come he doesnt say the lyrics at the "child" part but just hums?

  • @over9000bottlecaps

Avey Tare damaged his vocal chords a few years back, so he takes it easy when he screams.

  • Panda's drumming! Not that I don't like what he's doing now but he needs to start drumming again. He's so talented...

  • @platypae333 he is now! and he's fucking amazing at it.

  • @platypae333 Umm, have any of you guys seen him on the recent Animal Collective tour with Deacon back? Panda played a drum kit the entire set and it was AWESOME!!! He had a really diverse drum kit and he played his sampler from the drum throne. And, if I'm not mistaken, he was playing a little bit of some very thoughtful double bass!!!

  • @nicksartino No, no I haven't but that comment was five months old.

  • hate the sound in this, can't hear the bass at all and animal collectives sound isn't this vocal centred, the rest of the music is meant to brought up to the same level.

  • the crowd is so fucking lucky having experienced an Animal Collective gig around the Feels/SJ era. I just had to listen to For Reverend Green/The Purple Bottle after the band stopped playing them..but there's a newer fan base out there. They should bring these gems back!!!

  • geologist

  • panda bear needs to get back on the drums

  • @SleepingZombies he already did!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I reeeally wish I couldve seen them on this tour rather than merriweather. It actually seems like band, rather then just the three of them behind keyboards the entire time... Amazing

  • I fucking love the way he does that scream.

  • I listen to this more than I listen to the album version

  • Awesome

  • gotta love geologist and that frickin headlamp haha

  • @DrSquidley

    Joined you!

Please help me find the mask!

  • it's crazy how much the member's have grown from even here. they are definitely "adults" now.

  • Anyone know where I can get that hat that Avey Tare is wearing?

  • @LOLURCATS if you will join me in watching the video once more you will see that he's wearing just a regular beanie, with a plaster mask on top of it. you can see the string going around his head. so the question is, where might one procure said mask?

  • Is that the Pringles guy on Avey Tare's sock hat?

  • This definitely solidified my crush on Aey Tare. Love this band.

  • amazing singing!!

  • Mind=blown the fuck out of my head.

  • What are the next two lines after "I don't need these papers to take these pills" ?

  • playing music is tough. it's REALLY hard to dance and play at the same time unless you are really drunk or you are a lipsyncing fake pop star.

animal collective is totally dancing within their hearts

    they FUCKING RULE

  • he'll only be a friend if he touches your breast...

  • @drsetherz That line always sticks with me too....

  • I was firsted introduced to this band during recriational drug use and the high heat of the south Texas sun. It definitely was an experience

  • this is beauty!!!!!

  • This sounds so cool when they do it. And watching all of their fans try so hard to cover them provides hours of entertainment.

    Thanks, Animal Collective!

  • this. is . awesome. love this song a fuck ton.

  • One of the bestsongs I have ever heard!

  • How you can not move around to live Animal Collective is crazy. It's not even "dancing" you have to do. It's just feeling and reflecting the energy of the music. When everybody is moving you can feel it in the walls, it makes the band more energetic and excited to play for the audience. If skinny jeans kids dont want to move around then fuck them, push them out of the way and make your way up to the front.

  • I'm probably just having an emotional moment or being a pretentious fan, the type that makes people say that 'Animal Collective have the worst fans.' but I love this band so much, for the first time I really feel like I can truly emotionally connect with music theirs and they really inspire me to follow my dreams. With all this uncertainity and important decisions to be made thinking about them makes me think that it could all be all right, after everything they got here and it's pretty darn good

  • It takes A LOT of talent to sing like that. Screaming in the middle of a sentence is actually really hard.

  • holy shit theyre awesome live, hard to tell its live from just listening. good musicians

  • i love how he randomly screams, i wanna do that. also panda bear rules

  • @toddod87 Technically, it is Avey Tare that does the lions share of the singing/screaming, but Panda Bear does also add his fair share to add to the immediacy of the compositions.

  • opening your soul. better

  • best hat EVER

  • @rsfaan91 that's not irony, you fucking idiot.

  • @noathfx you are right its not ironic, stupid me.

why did you use that language?? was it really necessary lol?

  • @rsfaan91 That's coincidence, not irony. It's ok.. Alanis Morisette made the same mistake.

  • @noquarter610 the stuff in alanis morisettes songs are not instances of coincidence...

  • @asdfaasdfaasdfa Check this out. It's not necessarily coincidence, but nothing in that song is ironic. papercuts.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/30/isnt-it-ironic-probably-not/

  • @noquarter610 i know, but as i said, the stuff in alanis morisetts songs are not instances of coincidence.

  • @noquarter610 Many people have made that same mistake.

  • @rsfaan91 in what way is this ironic?

  • I thought this song was just about getting high.

  • this guy doesnt need studio magic, he sounds amazing on both the album and live

  • I fucking love this, Animal Collective is the shit. I know they've been talking about breaking up, but I really hope they don't, this is fucking great and I want to be able to see them live.

  • This song is about conformity and greed... it's about how people conform to the things and people around them and lose sight of humanity as a whole. How people will divide up their life into a simple form which is pleasing to them, but therefore living a false life, ignoring the truths of humanity for the promotion of one's own self interest... -"For Reverend Green" i think they are actually indirectly saying "For never-ending greed"

Listen closely and let me know what you think

  • @Gronko123

Its actually partially about his wife, partially about his daughter. Reverend Green is reference to the singer Al Green who's best hit was lets stay together. He is applying his own life to the lyrics of Al Green. I know these parts for sure, but your explanation may be viable also

  • @TheRanalAper

yeah one night when i was listening to the song i swore i heard "for never-ending greed" at least once, but yeah that makes sense. our interpretations actually co-inside with another. I think it's a song attacking the idea of conforming for the sake of "staying together" ... you can lose yourself when trying too hard to stay together

  • holy fucking shit. this is soooo so good.

  • I love when he screams!

  • is it awesome for me to name my future baby if hes a boy Avey?:) cant wait to find out what my babys gonna be. he/she is gonna be a little Animal Collective fan.:)

  • now it seems like deakin is like some random guy on stage :/

  • holy shit this is amazing

  • wow he fucking nailed the vocals in this. awesome.

  • Just because they dont move doesnt mean theyre not enjoying it,Shit I just stand there and take in the music,I wish I had a chair to sit down on then I could enjoy it better,

  • @midocrimsonfate agreed. i fucking hate standing up at a show. my feet get tired after the first band to play lol.

  • @therabbitprince what are you an old man

  • @midocrimsonfate hey man, me and my buddy saw them last year and people werent having a mosh pit but people were swaying out of crontrol everywhere! it was completely disapointing. Im on the same page as you man. sit and enjoy. take it all in!

  • @midocrimsonfate haha! aw, that's cute. I agree although i'd probably jump out of my chair and just jump around after a few minutes.

  • @midocrimsonfate Geologist is bobbing his head like crazy.

  • @midocrimsonfate everyone is prob too fucked up to move haha but they are deff enjoying it who wouldnt enjoy animal collective

  • i want that hat. i need that hat.

  • @DeLachuga I bet if he (David) wasn't wearing that hat you would think it was lame as fuck. God damn puss.

  • @mgy1523 yeah, totally. im just another hipster who only like animal collective before they got popular. chyeah.

  • what a crazy mother fucker! i love how animal collective is NEVER doing what you expect. in their music, their music videos, and in their concerts. they change up the lyrics, they change up everything, unlike so many bands who just play like it is on the record. fucking phenomenal, thats what it is

  • AVEYS HAT

  • @Blackwaterdesigns it reminds me of the giant lumberjack mask that is used in the peacebone video!!

  • Where may i get his beanie/!!?!

  • I'm dieing waiting for ODDSAC!

  • so deakin is makin stuff? is there any kind of release date or any news on it yet?

  • cool hat ftw..

  • how come theres 4 guys here but in other live vidz theres only 3??

  • after this tour the guitarist left for personal reasons. he's still considered in the band though and will probably come back sooner or later.

  • @vintagedrgonzo oh alright cool cuz i think they need all the help they can get if theyre gonna keep makin awesome songs.

    :P

  • Deakin, the guitarist who doesn't sing decided to leave them for a while and take a break from AC.

  • @Connorgreen

    he just sang at 3:46

  • @Je11yb3aner they play in random collections of members, anywhere from 2 to 4. the 4th member, deakin is taking a break but is planning to return, and has a solo album in the works

  • why/how are those fucking people standing still? i would go insane (sane).

  • Ahhhhggg think it's alright to sing like Adenauer?

  • they are so stoned:)

  • deacon needs to come back

i heard he was touring with panda?

  • That hat! hahaha

  • It's amazing that they could all sync their LSD trips together in such a way that they can perform together

  • thebigbib,

how many times have you taken acid.

  • Who cares who has heard of who?

This is amazing and people will be listening to it for hundreds of years.

  • I bet a lot of those people looking bored bought 'MPP' and said how great it is and how they've loved AC for years.

  • i started listening to them with merriweather post pavilion but then i bought strawberry jam and water curses but i dont claim that ive listened to them for years. some people are just late getting to the party. plus its not like theyre THAT well known. like sure among indie lovers and those fucking hipsters but everyone else in the world has never heard of them. and i live in baltimore too where they started so youd think some people would have at least heard of them.

  • I like how high the geologist looks.
