@tinawerewolfgirl It's about Russians defending against Napoleon's invasion in 1812, not sure which battle though, one near Moscow though. The Russians Were pretty outnumbered from what i recall and the song was written to commemorate their bravery.
Of the classics, this is one of my favorites. Tchaikovsky, I believe is one of the best composer of the do I have it correctly, 19th century?? Yes, I believe that is accurate, late 19th though.
I thought when it said "cannons" it meant pieces "in which the same melody is begun in different parts successively, so that the imitations overlap", but it turns out they were actual cannons. o.O
@ColorfulHyena Yup, Tcaikovksy wrote it to be played with over 60 stage cannons. Fortunately/unfortunately (depending on your point of view) no one uses THAT many cannons when performing it
The entire piece is awesome (A grossly overused word these days but is really the only single word I can think to describe it) while the last two minutes twenty-two seconds is the most mind-blowing piece of music you will ever hear.
@avrilfan2213 . . . and six dislikes? Damned philistines. I bet they were just looking for the finale which is a bit like going to a restaurant and just eating the dessert.
It's great to hear the piece in full. Thanks for the upload.
I had this song on tape done by the London Philharmonic and if you listened close enough you can hear the fuse burning just before the cannons went off. too bad my tape player ate the tape.
Remember Remember the fifth of November the gun powder treason and plot i see no reason why the gun powder treason should ever be forgot..... thank you V for introduceing me to such an awesome song
Oh how I love Tchaikovsky's masterpieces <3 Of all of the Russian romanticist composers, he is by far my favorite. Not to degrade others like Rimsy-Korsakov, or Stravinsky; each were great in their own right.
@GReg22334 He is Russian, but the song is about Napoleons 1812 invasion of Russia, and the resulting Russian victory (hence the use of the French National anthem before God Save the Tsar followed by the great ending to signify the victory.
I've played this more than several times broadcasting on the radio. The best was during the Fourth of July fireworks -- still get chills remembering the night. BOOOOM!!! :)
I wonder if he sat and got high and listened to his own stuff. You know just puff puff a couple of times and clode your eyes and watch the fireworks go off in your head to the music! That's what I'd do
I agree completely but let's move those words around a little, how about we try "This overture should be referred to as... the shit" cuz Tchaikovsky had the nes, let there be light, sound, drums guitar awwww "let there be rock!"
I do know that 1812 Overture was created around 1880. Did i say that it was created in 1812? I just wanted reader to thick about what it was like two hundred years ago.
IIST DER ENGEL DES TODES!! I thought those were 88's at first, but then i thought better of it and figured they must be 105's P.S> you looked great in downfall

If you like I will send the score for you to see. It is not of any great value, and I shall not be at all surprised or hurt if you consider the style of the music unsuitable to a symphony concert..."
Thats one way of clearing the cob-webs from the ears! I do enjoy this at max volume, I try visualise when this would of first been heard with the cannons, and try imagine the audience reaction to the cannons being fired, It's a good solution to cue noisy neighbors too!
@nelandquinten REMEMBER the Russian defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Borodino! And the Sacrificial burning of Moscow. THAT is what this masterpiece is about.
