  • did you notice the skinny gendarme from S.Chomet's "The Old Lady and the pigeons"?

he was standing near the "Golden Arrow" ship. when Jacques Tati was going to London by ship.

L'Illusionniste is such a good story. so sad. beautifull colors

  • I... love the French. It makes me want to visit France...

  • Part 4:

And really, that also describes Jacques Tati himself. He is very elegant in real life. So we went in that direction. He's a bit of a charicature, he's more M Hulot, in fact. In real life he's always a bit surprised, a bit lost. It's the thing that I wondered most about at the beginning. Do we give him the same soul, are we going to see it's Jacques Tati?"

  • Part 3:

The only thing I really kept was I wanted to make it a sort of 'game' not to have close ups in this film. I wanted to describe a very, very intimate story between two people without using close-ups. To come back to Tati's work, meaning using camera at eye level, the height of a 6 foot man's eye level. In fact, it's more based on the real Jacques Tati than M Hulot. In the script the main character is described as very elegant. ...

  • Part 2:

while the vision I had was to show a more 'down to earth' M Hulot with more natural settings. I wanted to find a way to show the 'magic' in the colours -- the colours of Scotland. If you know Scotland's earthy colours, the mountains are wild and brown, full of nuance. It never stops changing, the tone of the light constantly changes. That works very well with the script, because the story never stops changing. ...

  • Translation, Part 1:

"At the beginning you really sense M Tati's presence. But it's not a M Hulot film, it's not really typical of Jacques Tati's films. The story of this film evolves between two people over a long period of time over a large geographical area whereas Tati's films usually take place in one time and place. I also wanted to do something very different, have a different look than Tati's films which are usually more design-y than this film, ...

  • The whole movie is a beautiful painting. An hymn to a dying art.

  • Beautiful. Graphic quality reminiscent of Hergé and other artists. It makes Disney and the Toy Story style look so uninteresting. Looking forward to its release. Jaques Tati lives on.

  • Hi if anyone is intrested the hot "Litel Joe's hotel" is in fact called the Broughton hotel in Edinburgh it belongs to my wife & I Fiona & Freddie and can be easly found on the web look forward to any visitors who liked the film.

  • I really loved his previous animation but i cant understand one word of this interview :''''(

  • This movie is actually very sad and depressing, quite the opposite of the Triplettes. It represents the end of all the music hall artists.

  • Quelle beauté graphique, quelle qualite d'animation...

  • One of my teachers was the producer of the intro scene of Les Triplettes de Belleville. He claimed that Sylvain Chomet is a VERY difficult person to work with, but... oh, well. His movies rock.

  • He says he wanted to create something more pragmatic than Tati's movies (a lot of scenes take place in the nature). He didn' t want to use close-up, like Tati did.

Whatr the director was the most afraid of was : did we give a soul to Tati? Will the spectators notice that the character is Jacques Tati?

I don't know if it's clear. I'm not used to writing in english... ;)

  • @leazz1000 Tu te débrouille bien

  • The film is set in Scotland, so the little dialogue there is will most likely be in English. Fret not! It does look absolutely beautiful.

  • Could someone give a short translation into English? I know very little French, enough to know that the director is talking about Jacques Tati and the landscape, but most of it flew over my head.

  • Je ne comprends pas.... could someone translate into English? I got that he says something about the mountains, and something about Jacques Tati, but most of the French flew over my head.

  • Looking forward to see it!

  • i second that. would watch the whole thing without knowing the language. looks wonderful.

sub titles though. no dubbing. ruins the whole thing.

  • I cannot wait for this... BEAUTIFUL

  • I can't speak French, but this animation and design is GORGEOUS! I would happily sit through the whole film without understand a word, just for the visual candy. That said, I can't wait till this comes to the US with sub-titles or dubbing. Magnifique! ---Denis Kitchen

  • @deniskitchen

I've not seen the film (can't wait to see it), only the trailer, but you won't need subtitles or dubbing ..it's done like a silent movie with a background soundtrack, you get the gist of what's going on by the visuals and just the sound of people's voices just like so many of Tati's films. This is by the maker of Belleville Rendezvous (Les Triplettes de Belleville), and that had the same approach, virtually no dialogue..Chomet is a totally brilliant film-maker.

  • @deniskitchen I'm not a fluent speaker of French but thing is, with this film, you don't have to be. The entire film unfolds with a French man in the British Isles so there is that inherent theme of being alone in a foreign world and struggling to communicate. The result is that there is hardly any words spoken, but the strength of this film comes in its ability to express so much complexity and depth without clouding them with words.
