In my opinion todays MBT have to have modular reactive armor and hard/soft kill missile defense or it is obsolete. The Leo is a nice piece of machinery but it will suffer when opposing skilled infantry with modern ATGM.
I found the words "the gunner has the option to fire himself" rather funny, as I was thinking he'd have to be rather slim to fit into the 120mm bore :-P even though I know they meant fire the cannon using his controls.

Personally, I like the turret design of the M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams better, the flat vertical sides of the turret back seem rather vulnerable to APCR and APFSDS rounds.

nice piece of kit. As a British soldier stationed in Munsterlager. I was in a Bedford truck behind a Leo2. As I went to overtake on the tank road the it accelerated and left me behind. later commander and myself saw it from a funny side before going our seperate ways. It was fast and I had no chance. what impressed me the most was the MTU engine and how easy it is to change. I ate the best Erbsensuppe from there too.

L is german for "Länge" (length). so it has 55 Kaliberlängen (55 times the length of its caliber). the more powerful L55 has the same caliber to match with all old ammunition and keep simplicity and costs.

Die Russen haben "ARENA" aufgegeben, da solche Hard-Kill System zu gefärlich ist, für die Infanterie in der Nähe des Panzers ... Die Deutschen entwickeln, z.B., grad das "MUSS" (Multi Ammunition Softkill System), das dem russischen "Shtora-1" sehr änlich ist. Oder das "AWiSS" (Abstandswirksames Schutzsystem), das dem "TROPHY" sehr änlich ist ...
Nur zu seltsam, das aus den russischen Medien hervor geht, das im Georgienkrieg keine T-90 im Einsatz sind. Die haben da nur T-54, T-62, T-64 und T-72 ;-)
Hm, dieses militaryphotos . net scheint ja so eine Art von Privatleuten betriebenes Forum zu sein. Da würd ich nicht so sehr drauf vertrauhen, das die Beschrieftung der Fotos richtig sind. Am Ende hast du einen irakischen Asad Babil (T-72) gesehen, der als T-90 verkauft wurde ;-) wie gesagt, so viel ich weis waren keine T-90 und auch keine T-80 in Georgien im Einsatz :-)
Stimmt, könnt auf den ersten Blick ein T-80B sein, doch hat der T-80B die "Kontakt-1" Reaktivpanzerung am Turm und Wanne, deren einzelne Platten kleiner sind, als die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind. Daher tipp ich eher auf einen T-72, der auf T-90 Stand aufgerüstet wurde, da diese die "Kontakt-5" Reaktivpanzerung haben, deren einzelne Platten ungefähr die Größe haben, wie die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind.
Und ich wett mit dir, das du nicht wusdest, dass das E in Leopard 2E für Espania steht, genau so wenig wirst du gewusst haben, das der A6 EX eine privatwirtschaftliche Initiative von KMW war :-)

Da die Bundeswehr sich in einer Art "Umbau" befindet um es mal zu vereinfachen, tauchen tagtäglich gerüchte über abrüstung oder abschaffung auf dies ist leider nicht zu vermeiden. Fakt ist das der Gepard als Flapanzer in den Ruhestand versetzt wird, aber dies wird wohl noch einige Jahre dauern bevor wir zu anderen moderneren Flugabwehrwaffen greifen. Im Augeblick sind die beiden "Projekte" SkyShild und Patriot dabei ordentlich in die Bundeswehr eigengliedert zu werden.

Poland have a porgram of a new generation light tank it will be unvisible for infra-red visors of Jets & Helicopters and because of the light weight, it can be tranportated by airplanes. Throught an installation of more armor it can be upgraded to a MBT. The first prototype will be producet at 2012 i think, India give money for that programm, for the allowence that it can build the tanks for the Indian army in India. It will be a grat tank I think.
Leo 2 and Abrahams are designed with different priorities in mind, and they're actually the result of a joint development effort between the US and Germany. The Leo 2 was designed for mass use, mobility and range in a central European battlefield, a compromise between cost and logistic requirements (fuel/ammo) The Abrahams is designed for maximum survivability (it has more armor), accepting the disadvantage of higher fuel consumption and less range.
This was in the basic construction. But today the Leopard 2 get the "MEXAS-Heavy" additional armor. The protection effect is almost equal. And as you said, in the point mobility is the Leopard 2 clear better. Next thing is the upgraded fire power, where the Leopard 2 is today also superior, against the Abrams
The first versions of the M1 Abrams had really weak armor, today the M1A2 SEP Abrams and the Leopard 2A5/6 have probably identical armor, i.e. the estimations by impartial scientists are equal or in the same area.
The M1 has been produced in larger numbers, and the gas turbine of the M1 really don't look like an affirmation of your survivability aspect.

In 1980 MBB began developing the Lampyridae, a stalth fighter. Arround the same time the Americans started developing the F117. So theoretically, we had a stealth fighter, but this project was canceled.

Well Americans invented the suspension system (christie) that allows ALL tanks of today to travel at high speeds. We also invented the fire control system which allows tanks to fire on the move. So really, the Abrams, the Leopard, and the Challenger are evolutions of technologies form all three of our countries. The Leopard 2A6 has the longer L/55. But the Abrams have higher Firepower than the Leopard 2. And they havent the same Armor Protection. The Abrams has Chobham Armor with Depleted Uranium. The Leopard has 3rd Gen. Composite Armor. The Abrams is better protected against KE. The Leopard better against CE. 2014 are the Leopard 2A7+ , M1A3 Abrams, Challenger 2 ( w. 120mm and Export Engine and the T-95 the new best MBTs.

1. Der Abrams hat nur die Rheinmetall 120mm L/44 Kanone. Feldtests mit der Rh L/55 haben gezeigt, das der Drehkranz des M1 nicht in der Lage ist, die Kräfte der Rh L/55 zu kompesieren ...
2. Ja, was PS und Geschwindigkeit angeht, sind Leo2 und M1 ziemlich gleich, allerdings hat die AGT-1500 ca. 210% Verbrauch, im Verhältnis zum MB-873, was den M1 ziemlich einschränkt, was die Reichweite angeht ...
@couteau86 Über den verbrauch hatte ich nich gesprochen, aber es sollte logisch sein das eine Gasturbine mehr verbraucht als ein Diesel Motor ;-) Und ja ich weiß das der M1 die L44 hat, ich hatte mich auch schon rechtfertigen müssen für diesen Fehler. Aber danke das du mich nochmals drauf hingewiesen hasst ;-)

Öhm, der MTU MB 873 - Ka 501 des Leopard 2 ist ein Vielstoffmotor. Heist, das er, genau wie die Lycoming Textron AGT-1500 Gasturbine, auch mit anderen Brennstoffen betrieben werden kann. Genau gesagt, muss das Verhältnis zumindest 60% Diesel und 40% andere brennbare Flüssigkeiten betragen ... und er läuft trotzdem ;-)

@DemPaschseiner eine Gasturbine kann zwar jede brennbare Flüssigkeit in prakttisch jedem Mischverhältnis verbrennen, dafür braucht das Ding auch unmengen saubere Luft, deswegen haben die USA auch diverse Probleme mit ihren Luftfiltern bei ihren Panzern die sie im Nahen Osten stationiert haben, oder im Irak waren.
@MTTT1234 Die Luftprobleme haben sich aber erledigt. Die Luftfilter reinigen sich nun automatisch bevor sie dicht sind. Und wenn die Amis mal eine moderne Turbine einbauen würden könnten sie sich auf einem Verbrauchsniveau eines Leo2 bewegen. Aber noch haben sie ja genug Stoff zum verheizen.

And there is a huge difference in the engines, since the one IS a gas turbine, and the other is a large diesel. For example, you should not get to close to the rear exhaust panel on an M1...
WTF??? Why they shall adapt the Abrams from this powerfull gun to this old shit of M68??? The reality is, that just the M1 had the 105mm M68 L/52 rifled gun, all other variants of the Abrams have the 120mm M256 L/44 smoothbore gun (license produced German Rheinmetall 120mm L/44) ... so, how you come to this shit with the guns???

In my opinion todays MBT have to have modular reactive armor and hard/soft kill missile defense or it is obsolete. The Leo is a nice piece of machinery but it will suffer when opposing skilled infantry with modern ATGM.

Beautiful MBT, clearly shows the ingenuity and superiority of the German armored vehicle industry. A worthy descendant to the fearsome Tigers and Panthers. The fact that the powerplant can be exchanged in 15 minutes under battle conditions left me with my jaw dropped.
Personally, I like the turret design of the M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams better, the flat vertical sides of the turret back seem rather vulnerable to APCR and APFSDS rounds.
Still, an amazing vehicle. Not to be trifled with.

nice piece of kit. As a British soldier stationed in Munsterlager. I was in a Bedford truck behind a Leo2. As I went to overtake on the tank road the it accelerated and left me behind. later commander and myself saw it from a funny side before going our seperate ways. It was fast and I had no chance. what impressed me the most was the MTU engine and how easy it is to change. I ate the best Erbsensuppe from there too.

Stimmt. Mir fällt grad noch mehr auf.
Beim ersten Panzer sieht man recht deutlich einen Auspuff. Damit kann es schonmal kein T80 sein. Und die Wanne sieht stark nach nem späten T72
Modell aus. Hauptgeschütz ist auch noch in der T72 Montage.
T72 + Kontakt5 + externe Tanks vom T90 + T80 AA-MG ist schon ne komische Kombination.
Ich hatte eben wegen diesem Schild für den MG Schützen gedacht es wäre nen T80. Hab so was noch nie bei nem T72 oder T90 gesehen.

Die Russen haben "ARENA" aufgegeben, da solche Hard-Kill System zu gefärlich ist, für die Infanterie in der Nähe des Panzers ... Die Deutschen entwickeln, z.B., grad das "MUSS" (Multi Ammunition Softkill System), das dem russischen "Shtora-1" sehr änlich ist. Oder das "AWiSS" (Abstandswirksames Schutzsystem), das dem "TROPHY" sehr änlich ist ...

Die haben Arena keinesfalls aufgegeben.
Aus dem Georgienkrieg gab es einige Fotos von T90 mit Arena.
Aber wegen der Gefahr für Infanterie benutzten sie es in den aktuellen Konflikten in Tschetschenien und Dagestan nicht.

Hm, dieses militaryphotos . net scheint ja so eine Art von Privatleuten betriebenes Forum zu sein. Da würd ich nicht so sehr drauf vertrauhen, das die Beschrieftung der Fotos richtig sind. Am Ende hast du einen irakischen Asad Babil (T-72) gesehen, der als T-90 verkauft wurde ;-) wie gesagt, so viel ich weis waren keine T-90 und auch keine T-80 in Georgien im Einsatz :-)

Ja ist privat.
Auf den Fotos waren jedoch teilweise Ortsschilder/Schilder zu Georgischen Städten zu sehen.
Zwischen nem T72 und T90 Wrack zu unterscheiden ist natürlich nicht besonders einfach, aber es war deutlich die autonome Waffenstation zu sehen.
Kann daher eigentlich nur ein T90 gewesen sein.

Stimmt, könnt auf den ersten Blick ein T-80B sein, doch hat der T-80B die "Kontakt-1" Reaktivpanzerung am Turm und Wanne, deren einzelne Platten kleiner sind, als die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind. Daher tipp ich eher auf einen T-72, der auf T-90 Stand aufgerüstet wurde, da diese die "Kontakt-5" Reaktivpanzerung haben, deren einzelne Platten ungefähr die Größe haben, wie die, die man auf dem Foto zu sehen sind.

Ist dir noch nei aufgefallen, das jede Variante des Leo2 nur eine Verbesserung der vorhergehenden Variante ist und das es daher zu logisch ist, das auch ein Leopard 2E von einem Leo2 A4 abstammt, wie auch der Leo2 A6??? Ändert aber nix an der Tatsache, das der Leo2E technisch gesehen näher an dem Leo2 A6 als am Leo2 A4 ist. Und an diesen Fakt ändert auch deine lächerliche Arroganz nichts du Depp :-)

Kleiner, das war eine simple Übersetung des Satzes "Der Leopard 2E entspricht im Aufbau dem Leopard 2A6 der Bundeswehr, besitzt aber zahlreiche Verbesserungen und Änderungen unter Nutzung der verfügbaren Technologie ..., was einfach Ausgedrückt heist, das er eine modifizierte Version des A6 ist.

Da die Bundeswehr sich in einer Art "Umbau" befindet um es mal zu vereinfachen, tauchen tagtäglich gerüchte über abrüstung oder abschaffung auf dies ist leider nicht zu vermeiden. Fakt ist das der Gepard als Flapanzer in den Ruhestand versetzt wird, aber dies wird wohl noch einige Jahre dauern bevor wir zu anderen moderneren Flugabwehrwaffen greifen. Im Augeblick sind die beiden "Projekte" SkyShild und Patriot dabei ordentlich in die Bundeswehr eigengliedert zu werden.

@DonStefan4 Ich empfehle die Werksabholung in Kassel. Da gibt es eine schöne Erbsensuppe aus der Gulaschkanone und es wird feierlich das Deutschlandlied geschmettert. Und ehe man sich versieht, ist ein erlebnisreicher Tag vorbei und das Konto um eine handvoll Mios leichter. Viel Spaß mit dem neuen Auto!

An active protection for RPG`s and other cumulative rockets will be installed too. But its not clear whitch system it will be, maybe the trophy-active RPG-system or something like that. It will be an unbeatable tank :)

Poland have a porgram of a new generation light tank it will be unvisible for infra-red visors of Jets & Helicopters and because of the light weight, it can be tranportated by airplanes. Throught an installation of more armor it can be upgraded to a MBT. The first prototype will be producet at 2012 i think, India give money for that programm, for the allowence that it can build the tanks for the Indian army in India. It will be a grat tank I think.

Leo 2 and Abrahams are designed with different priorities in mind, and they're actually the result of a joint development effort between the US and Germany. The Leo 2 was designed for mass use, mobility and range in a central European battlefield, a compromise between cost and logistic requirements (fuel/ammo) The Abrahams is designed for maximum survivability (it has more armor), accepting the disadvantage of higher fuel consumption and less range.

This was in the basic construction. But today the Leopard 2 get the "MEXAS-Heavy" additional armor. The protection effect is almost equal. And as you said, in the point mobility is the Leopard 2 clear better. Next thing is the upgraded fire power, where the Leopard 2 is today also superior, against the Abrams

The first versions of the M1 Abrams had really weak armor, today the M1A2 SEP Abrams and the Leopard 2A5/6 have probably identical armor, i.e. the estimations by impartial scientists are equal or in the same area.
The M1 has been produced in larger numbers, and the gas turbine of the M1 really don't look like an affirmation of your survivability aspect.

Fighters: I am sure we could build an stealthfighter. If we wanted.
Think about that: What if europe (maybe the US too) had an effectiv method to find stealthed aircrafts? We would build one. But one what is able to carry more weapons, has more mobility, and is able to defend europe.
The F22 can carry max 2 or 4 rockets, as far as I know. The EF a little bit more and different weapons.
And a new "radar" or tank plan could easily be hidden.

Well Americans invented the suspension system (christie) that allows ALL tanks of today to travel at high speeds. We also invented the fire control system which allows tanks to fire on the move. And oh yah, russians invented sloped armor. All things the germans have put in their designs.

@FinalPre Germany makes amazing tanks, so does the US, and so does the UK. All three of our countries have built some aspects of each tank. So really, the Abrams, the Leopard, and the Challenger are evolutions of technologies form all three of our countries. And for you to think that somehow german tanks are more advanced is retarded at best. Oh and btw we dont use german armor. It's mainly british armor with an american spin on it.

The Leopard 2A6 has the longer L/55. But the Abrams have higher Firepower than the Leopard 2. And they havent the same Armor Protection. The Abrams has Chobham Armor with Depleted Uranium. The Leopard has 3rd Gen. Composite Armor. The Abrams is better protected against KE. The Leopard better against CE. 2014 are the Leopard 2A7+ , M1A3 Abrams, Challenger 2 ( w. 120mm and Export Engine and the T-95 the new best MBTs.

@TankNutJohn89 This is not right, the Leopard 2 A6 M and the M1 Abrams have the same L55 120mm Canonne. Same firepower and same Reloading time. Not much different are the engines. The German Leo use a MTU MB 873 12 Cylinder Diesel engine he delivers 1100 KW
The M1 use a AGT-1500 Gas turbine Allison DDA X-1100-3B
1119 kW Both types can use the same fuel
Each tank has properties of good and bad, no one is perfect
The battle is decided by the first shot and a good crew

1. Der Abrams hat nur die Rheinmetall 120mm L/44 Kanone. Feldtests mit der Rh L/55 haben gezeigt, das der Drehkranz des M1 nicht in der Lage ist, die Kräfte der Rh L/55 zu kompesieren ...
2. Ja, was PS und Geschwindigkeit angeht, sind Leo2 und M1 ziemlich gleich, allerdings hat die AGT-1500 ca. 210% Verbrauch, im Verhältnis zum MB-873, was den M1 ziemlich einschränkt, was die Reichweite angeht ...

@couteau86 Über den verbrauch hatte ich nich gesprochen, aber es sollte logisch sein das eine Gasturbine mehr verbraucht als ein Diesel Motor ;-) Und ja ich weiß das der M1 die L44 hat, ich hatte mich auch schon rechtfertigen müssen für diesen Fehler. Öhm, der MTU MB 873 - Ka 501 des Leopard 2 ist ein Vielstoffmotor. Heist, das er, genau wie die Lycoming Textron AGT-1500 Gasturbine, auch mit anderen Brennstoffen betrieben werden kann. Genau gesagt, muss das Verhältnis zumindest 60% Diesel und 40% andere brennbare Flüssigkeiten betragen ... und er läuft trotzdem ;-)

@DemPaschseiner eine Gasturbine kann zwar jede brennbare Flüssigkeit in prakttisch jedem Mischverhältnis verbrennen, dafür braucht das Ding auch unmengen saubere Luft, deswegen haben die USA auch diverse Probleme mit ihren Luftfiltern bei ihren Panzern die sie im Nahen Osten stationiert haben, oder im Irak waren.

@MTTT1234 Die Luftprobleme haben sich aber erledigt. Die Luftfilter reinigen sich nun automatisch bevor sie dicht sind. Und wenn die Amis mal eine moderne Turbine einbauen würden könnten sie sich auf einem Verbrauchsniveau eines Leo2 bewegen. Aber noch haben sie ja genug Stoff zum verheizen.

that is because both tanks have their roots in the same tank development project. In the cold war germany and the United States started a cooperation project to develop a new main battle tank. But both countries had different requirements so over the time the development costs exploded and the project was canceled, so Germany started their Leopard programm and the USA their M1 programm and the results today are the Leopard 2A6M and the M1A2 Abrams.

@Hawkeye2252 Actually this is not right either. The M1 does NOT use the 120mm Rheinmetall gun, but a 105 mm L52 M68 rifled cannon. Only in the M1A1 was the Rheinmetall gun introduced.
And there is a huge difference in the engines, since the one IS a gas turbine, and the other is a large diesel. For example, you should not get to close to the rear exhaust panel on an M1...
