@zekrom12 That's Sapphire, not May. Sapphire is from the Pokemon Adventures manga. Her design is relatively based off May, but she is actually very different. The manga isn't made for kids like the anime is, so the characters are more detailed and realistic.

That's because that's not May, that's Sapphire from the manga.

in the manga she's the daughter of Birch, one day, when she was little, her father took her to Johto were she meet Ruby (Brendan's counterpart) and both were attacked by a Salamance.

Ruby tried to protect her, but the Salamance used Dragon Claw on him, leaving him with a scar on his head (That's why he uses the hat), since then, Sapphire became a though girl, so that nobody would get hurt because of her.

Back at Hoenn she started to act like a wild beast, playing arround and fighting with the pokemon at the local forest, so she became sorta wild looking herself.

Meanwhile, Ruby became a bratty and vain teen with no interest in fighting, but started to like pokemon contests.

She was traumatized because Ruby got seriously hurt to protect her, so she vowed to become a strong girl and never depend on someone else again, so nobody would get hurt because of her.

To do so, she started to play arround in the wild and pick fights with local pokemon, this behavior made her become way too wild herself, the fangs and eye style symbolize her wild and hardy personality.
