i think they should had the old and new track they can use the old layout for lemans style endurance racing and called the 24 hours of Hockenheim and use the new layout for the german grand prix
Old hockenheim succkeeddddd. Ridiculously long straight, brake, accelerate for another ridiculous long straight, etc etc. Boring. The new hockenheim is so much better and don't give me the nonsense that there's no overtaking the new hockenheim produces pretty good racing every time with plenty of overtakes..
@TheEngland72 - Oh because I don't agree that one of the "old school" tracks was any good? Again thank you very much you certainly know how to debate properly and not resort to personal insults *rolls eyes. -_-
@TheEngland72 - Honestly?? I wouldn't care one bit as long as the new track is up to par. And in hockenheim's case the new track has produced some good racing since it's inception in 2002.
Heh... don't you just hate it when commentators can't stop babbling about anecdotes, reading out loud the times that you can see on the screen, etc, instead of letting us listen to the engines? They do the same thing over here.
Herman Tilke ruined this classic circuit and is very horny for every remaining classic circuit in the world he can destroy and make some more money to himself.
i have watched F1 for more than 10 years, im a true fan and i can say by experience that hermann tilke is a bastard... takes away ALL the good tracks and puts new pure shit there, tracks like korea and abu dhabi where its impossible to overtake.. and this... this track is just something so amazing... every formula driver and a fan who has even ever seen the old track, respects it... FUCK YOU BERNIE AND HERMANN!
It's one thing to build a new section the existing track. It's another thing to tear up the old section! They could have left the old section around for other events and still had the new section for F1....
This circuit was unique, had it's own character. Something a lot of the newer circuits today lack. They didn't even race at Spa and Suzuka a few times in the last couple years. Thats an absolute sin in my opinion! Some of these older circuits should be automatic on the schedule. And never remodeled!
They never, I mean never should have chopped up this circuit. It was awesome! It along with Monza were the true Power tracks in F1. They did it so the fans could see more of the action. I say who cares. Nothing better than sitting in the forest on a lazy Sunday afternoon and listening to those cars come ripping up the straight at you. Music to my ears!
When I was a kid, I loved the straight parts of this track. The high speed was awesome. Why did they change the track? Nowadays they have debts, audience is low. Instead of commercializing, they should have left the track as it was. To change the track was a mistake.
What is there to like about this track? Straight, chicane, straight, flat, flat, flat, flat, flat, then a short stadium. And the drivers love Tilke's circuits. And Why do people call themselves F1 fans when all they do Is complain, when I'm sure there wasn't any more overtaking then than now. Some examples of good races: Australia 2010, Canada 2010, Valenca 2010 (if only for Webber's crash lol) And others that i've forgotten (awful memory lol). Reply to that if you dare!
@muulka Australia was due to changable conditions, and Canada due to bad tire wear, Valencia wasnt really exiting... The old hockenhiem circuit offered about three places to overtake, the new one has only one. The only fast corners (that arent flat out) on the new track were also on the old circuit. The only reason to like the new version is because it isnt just chicanes, but their replacements are not exactly exiting corners...
@muulka It was neat to come out of the stadium into the woods while the cars are going top speed and . Then coming back into the stadium with the cheering crowd. You may be a new fan of formula 1 so you wouldnt see the beauty in this circuit. And a fan doesnt have to support everything about formula 1. Some of us complain because we want see better things for the sport we love.
The only Tilke track that received universal praise from the drivers was Istanbul. The remainder of his circuits were met with a could-do/could-do-without attitude.
I'm sort of glad to see it go, though. No one shows up for the race except the people putting it on and most of the overtaking is done outside of the points paying positions.
This is the real Hockenheim, just like they destroyed Sudschleife in favour of the new, crappy "Nurburgring". It really does not deserve that name, and neither does Tilke Hockenheim.
@GrannyBX I watched the GP at Hockenheim also last weekend, and yes it was absolutely awful. To be honest every F1 race this year has been awfully boring. But Hockenheim is pretty awful now.
The Austin GP circuit actually doesn't look that bad. Has enough sweepers to make things exciting for spectators in attendance and many tight corners followed by long straights that duck back into tight corners for overtaking.
As long as there are some elevation changes like Turkey has, it'll be alright.
I don't like the new layout at all. The old one was a classic and I'm praying one day they'll put it back to use (or something similar with fast straights through the forest).
@schuf1 Uh Monza lol. This is like monza but the straights are curved. This is just straightaway than chicane. but it is very nice to come into the stadium section after driving through the forest : D
the problem with it was, teams had the make a choice whether to go for a set up with better downforce for the long straights or the corners (stadium section).
Old Hockenheim. What was good about it was it had lots of high speed straights(for slipstreaming), and in the refuelling days of F1 the tacticans couldn't muck around that much with fuel pitstops so drivers had to overtake on the track.
I really miss the old Hockenheim layout :(. It was one of most fun tracks I drove on in a F1 video game. I really think that Turkey, Valencia, Singapore, Bahrain, and Abu Dhabi need to be axed from the calendar. I would put back in France, Imola, Mexico, US, Zandvoort, Austria and Brands Hatch back into the F1 calendar and bring back the 3.0L V10's to kill those suckish 2.4L V8's. Forcibly remove Eccelstone, Tilke and Todt and F1 will be perfect again! Yay!!!
@CaboArmorKing Ok. To be honest, the drivers like Turkey and Singapore, but I wish that there was more racing at the Istanbul Circuit. Singapore is cool at night. All of the other Herman Tilke designed circuits go bye bye.

Ye I remember my brother driving to the Hockenheimring in his tuned Jaguar XJ220 barraling down those vast straights at 230MPH, the car shook violently. Insane!!
god I miss this track, there was some challenge to the drivers, and what a beatiful woods as well. The current version's utter bullshit, just a shame.
they cut a lot off of the hockenheim track. i like the original san marino track before they put in all the extra chicanes. formula one needs more street circuits. i hope they bring usgp back as a street circuit
Disagree. Street circuits are the death of F1 (except Monaco) and all this Tilke trash new tracks. The old race circuits, Monza, Spa, Brands Hatch, Montreal, Austria, and of course the old Hockenheim were true racing circuits, not the sterilized, characterless boring bullshits what Tilke and Bernie makes.
Street circuits are good for Indycar - but in F1 only Monte Carlo should be the only street circuit.
@kzbxvz I think the new Hockenheim layout was made in 2002 after the German Grand Prix. It was first used in 2003, I saw that race on SPEED. I don't know if it's true or not?
@ffmotorsports51 It's not true, the first F1 GP was held 2002 on the new rebuilt Hockenheim circuit. And like many other F1 fans all over the world I think Herman Tilke sucks ass!!
@kzbxvz Oh all right, thank you. In my F1 2002 game, the old Hockenheim layout is in the game so I thought that 2003 was the first of the butchered Hockenheim. Herman Tilke's track designs do look good, but they are boring and too wide. The FIA are now weenies on safety.
@ffmotorsports51 Yes and it's almost impossible to slipstream on new "boring" circuits. On the good ol Hockenheimring slipstreaming was essential to win the race.
apart from safety issues, the f1 management were concerned abt the length of a lap which was(still might be) longest amongst f1 circuits. also for some reason it wasnt spectator n telly-broadcastin friendly according to the management.
really miss these high speed, low downforce circuits of yesteryears.
@F1Racer4Eyes I don't agree with you guys 100%. Of course the old Hockenheim circuit was something special and the speed they were doing in straightline was just breathtaking and I miss it, too. But the new track is great, too. I went there in 2005 and sat in the first corner. They flew past me with 300 and threw the corner with 250 kph! The mid-corner speed was amazing and that wasn't possible with the wing-angles back then. Also overtaking is possible thanks to the hairpin at the backstraight.
Why the fuck are they ruining F1? the circuits....the engines...the cars dont go so fast anymore.....long are gone the days of blasting into a hockenheim forest 350 km per hour
I agree with most of what you said, with all the new age tracks, it seems like the beautiful history and aura of the sport is lost. I like to be able to watch the races and think about the history of the circuit, all the memorable moments.
I was disappointed to see Montreal taken off the schedule also, as I am in the states and it was the only remaining North American circuit, but it was in a state of disrepair and I can see why they scratched it. If they can update it, it could be back.
As for the rule changes, I am all for any rules that are implemented primarily for the purpose of improved safety, be it driver or spectator. I like having the slicks back, but I don't think they were a worthy exchange for all the standardized aero parts. And KERS has done absolutely nothing positive for the sport in my mind. It was instituted to increase passing, but its only being used by the slower teams to defend from being passed, it has totally backfired and I hope its gone in 2010.
Well luckily for everyone those rules for 2010 wont happen and Montreal is coming back. Couldnt be better. Plus 28 cars on track with the possible addition of a 14th team. Add Lotus back in F1 and 2010 will be a season to remember.
these frozen V8's suck! The cars are struggling in top speeds what a pity hungaroring 08 had a top speed of only 299kph,brazil 08 just 302(kimi),monza 07 350 with the others going down to even 334!f1 is not about speed anymore at a time when we had cars reaching about 330 kph in spa this year it was just 316(heikki)and the slower cars in 300's this sport rocked till 2005
The cut down in top speed dosent bother me that much...if its 320 or 310 i dont care!
BUT the biggest difference was that the V10 had much more low-end torque, which you could see and almost feel in the ACCELERATION...especially out of slower corners!
You could feel that brutal power!
With the 2.4's they also banned variable air-intake, so the 2.4's only delivers true power at a very small rev-range!
all these new tracks are designed to give maximum viewing wherever you are on the track, basically they are designed because they will give bernie more tv money, thats why all the beautiful old tracks running through forests are getting replaced by the new ones built on industrial waste land or desert, if they get rid of spa il stop watching f1 forever, and bring back susuka that fugis crap, all the new tilke tracks can go apart from turkey i like it
In my opinion this iteration of Hockenheim along with Spa and Suzuka are the best tracks. Its beauty is its contrasts: high speed straights & tight chicanes; flowing forests & the stadium. It was a test of man and machine. Low downforce for straight line speed or high for the stadium? There was no optimal setup so we got to see drivers do what they are paid to do: drive. 210mph. Overtaking. Breathtaking. It lives in the memory. I strongly detest this new track which severely lacks character.
the reason they changed it was because dey wanted it 2 b safer adn spectater rfeindly wich is bullshit 2 me coz the cars havntgone any more dangerous, deyv gotten safer nd f1 is slowly dying, GET RID OF MAX MOSLEY !!!!!!!!
all with u man! u got it right! They should make a new Hockenheim that's a bit more technical and tight in places, but maintaining those incredible straights and great chicanes.
but well probably have to wait for him to die until we get someone new.
another fact was the stadium section was a lot tougher then because they ran on ridiculously low levels of downforce. but the fact you were going 350 kph through the forest was the best part!
i cant w8 for him to die, no1 can. and just for fun i drew my own version of what hokenheim should be, 7 long straights, the shortest ofcourse is the main straight but the oter ones are no lessthen 1.4 km and no more than 2.6 km. now put an f1 car with v16 turbo charged engine.
this track should be brought back along with austria a1 ring as hikemaster said. the new tracks ie turkey etc are no comparison. f1 is about speed and how FAST a driver and car can get around a track. why is fia always trying to slow them down? people know the danger when they get involved with the sport?
Its about the cost, higher risk=higher ammount of money have to get pumped in.
BUT the sponsors know that, all ppl know that is cost money, so they shud stop race then haha, better to drive go-kart cus the F-1 cars are runing slower every year that comes
The drivers get off to easy with mistakes now a days, with the big run off zones. I know safety comes first but they should still get stuck in gravel traps so they get penalized for mistakes. Instead they just run on the tarmac and dont even lose a place. Formula one is going the wrong way. It's all about pushing in and out laps to over take in the pits. I hope the rules over the next few years improve the over taking chances.
i know, you look at kubica in canada and all he suffered was a sprained ankle and concusion. The old drivers use to love the thrills from all the risks. its what made f1.
Why Oh Why Oh Why did they distroy Hockenheim!?!?! why did Bernie let it happen?! Because they couldnt build grandstands in the woods, thats why. Money hungry businessmen have taken over F1 and they are killing the sports character. Bernie, you should be shot! Such a shame, Hockenheim is now just a go kart track.
The REAL hockenheim :) Not that shite they race on now.
I can understand people slagging off Tilke tracks, but not neccesarily Turkey. It's actually a pretty decent circuit, more challenging than Bahrain or Shanghai.
this is what a track should be tearing through a forest at ridiculous speeds not some stupid space age modern piece of shite with tarmac run off areas you mays aswell get a carpark and paint some lines on it if you spin off your out thats how it should be keep em on their toes
if i where the formula one boss, i let the old hockenheim return (the have to rebuild it than!), traction control en all other things would disapear, it will come to real driving and the fake circuits like bahrein (o my god i hate that track) and turkey would disapear, fans of formula one must come a lot closer to the drivers, cheaper tickets, no stupid wings and other things on the car, the cars would get a much nicer model
i think they should had the old and new track they can use the old layout for lemans style endurance racing and called the 24 hours of Hockenheim and use the new layout for the german grand prix

@kzbxvz Oh all right, thank you. In my F1 2002 game, the old Hockenheim layout is in the game so I thought that 2003 was the first of the butchered Hockenheim. Herman Tilke's track designs do look good, but they are boring and too wide. The FIA are now weenies on safety.
ffmotorsports51 2 years ago
@ffmotorsports51 Yes and it's almost impossible to slipstream on new "boring" circuits. On the good ol Hockenheimring slipstreaming was essential to win the race.
kzbxvz 2 years ago
why did they even get rid of it? safety issues or something like that?
Fwibbib19 2 years ago
apart from safety issues, the f1 management were concerned abt the length of a lap which was(still might be) longest amongst f1 circuits. also for some reason it wasnt spectator n telly-broadcastin friendly according to the management.
really miss these high speed, low downforce circuits of yesteryears.
TheNakul 2 years ago 2
bring it back!!!!!! the new one is like a baby's circuit
Fwibbib19 2 years ago 7
sadly they can't. The forest section was torn up and replaced with tree's. it'll never come back. And I hate it as much as you do.

So a driver's skill and commitment is down to what the tracks are like? Right......

The old Hockenheim track is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the new one.
F1Racer4Eyes 2 years ago 70
@F1Racer4Eyes I don't agree with you guys 100%. Of course the old Hockenheim circuit was something special and the speed they were doing in straightline was just breathtaking and I miss it, too. But the new track is great, too. I went there in 2005 and sat in the first corner. They flew past me with 300 and threw the corner with 250 kph! The mid-corner speed was amazing and that wasn't possible with the wing-angles back then. Also overtaking is possible thanks to the hairpin at the backstraight.

@F1Racer4Eyes YEAH...i miss it

@F1Racer4Eyes Formula 1 management must have been high when they decided to redesign hockenheim

Can you imagine KERS with an old V10 down these straights would be unbelievably quick
sgp101 2 years ago 28
@sgp101 could get pole with that
mrwarstv 7 months ago
Why the fuck are they ruining F1? the circuits....the engines...the cars dont go so fast anymore.....long are gone the days of blasting into a hockenheim forest 350 km per hour
LarryKEKE 2 years ago 8
bernie ecclestone&co is the problem
They demanded hockenheim had to be ruined for commercial reasons :S
basbb1 2 years ago 7
The rules this year are ok!
We have slicks back on, and no TC, and we see closer racing due to the new aerorules, than we have seen in a long time!
The REAL concern is the proposed rules for 2010!!! They would be a disaster!!!
Anyway I also miss the Old Hockenheim...
There should be room in F1 for "odd" circuits, EVEN though they might present some "problems" (engine-killer track etc etc.)
And we lack Low-downforce circuits! We have Monza as the only one...Montreal is gone too!
Michaelingolfhansen 2 years ago
I agree with most of what you said, with all the new age tracks, it seems like the beautiful history and aura of the sport is lost. I like to be able to watch the races and think about the history of the circuit, all the memorable moments.
I was disappointed to see Montreal taken off the schedule also, as I am in the states and it was the only remaining North American circuit, but it was in a state of disrepair and I can see why they scratched it. If they can update it, it could be back.
NateDawg80126 2 years ago 2
As for the rule changes, I am all for any rules that are implemented primarily for the purpose of improved safety, be it driver or spectator. I like having the slicks back, but I don't think they were a worthy exchange for all the standardized aero parts. And KERS has done absolutely nothing positive for the sport in my mind. It was instituted to increase passing, but its only being used by the slower teams to defend from being passed, it has totally backfired and I hope its gone in 2010.
NateDawg80126 2 years ago
Yes its very sad that Montreal is gone!...also because it really was a good racing curcuit!
I cant remember the last time we have has a boring race at montreal!!!
About the rules changes: there was talk about no refueling and other wierd stuff in 2010! Its that kind of siily stuff I dont want to enter the sport!
KERS: well it was worth trying, but I agree that the big effect on overtaking etc. has yet to be seen!
Michaelingolfhansen 2 years ago
KERS has been proven to be effective at Hungary 2009. See how Raikkonen and Hamilton dominated the race at the very first corner.
I think Hammy could have gotten a podium at Nurburgring, but it was a racing accident.
GTAstuntz 2 years ago

374349 3 years ago
The cut down in top speed dosent bother me that much...if its 320 or 310 i dont care!
BUT the biggest difference was that the V10 had much more low-end torque, which you could see and almost feel in the ACCELERATION...especially out of slower corners!
You could feel that brutal power!
With the 2.4's they also banned variable air-intake, so the 2.4's only delivers true power at a very small rev-range!
Michaelingolfhansen 3 years ago
all these new tracks are designed to give maximum viewing wherever you are on the track, basically they are designed because they will give bernie more tv money, thats why all the beautiful old tracks running through forests are getting replaced by the new ones built on industrial waste land or desert, if they get rid of spa il stop watching f1 forever, and bring back susuka that fugis crap, all the new tilke tracks can go apart from turkey i like it
shazmeister2005 3 years ago
The Turkey track is the Tilke tracks that produces the worst racing though.

Can anyone tell me when they stopped using old circuit?

can anybody tell me why that tillke person chanched that hockenheim? it's a beautiful circuit & i love the straight & chicanes
ideeXloos 3 years ago 3
In the wet the straights are death traps with the only thing to stop you if i aquaplane into a spin being metal barriers or a forest.
Brilliant track tho
pablomason635 3 years ago
the reason they changed it was because dey wanted it 2 b safer adn spectater rfeindly wich is bullshit 2 me coz the cars havntgone any more dangerous, deyv gotten safer nd f1 is slowly dying, GET RID OF MAX MOSLEY !!!!!!!!
alinasser4 3 years ago 2
all with u man! u got it right! They should make a new Hockenheim that's a bit more technical and tight in places, but maintaining those incredible straights and great chicanes.
GTRF1V8 3 years ago 2
i think bernie ecclestone the biggest problem.
but well probably have to wait for him to die until we get someone new.
another fact was the stadium section was a lot tougher then because they ran on ridiculously low levels of downforce. but the fact you were going 350 kph through the forest was the best part!
GoTheUnderdog99 2 years ago
i cant w8 for him to die, no1 can. and just for fun i drew my own version of what hokenheim should be, 7 long straights, the shortest ofcourse is the main straight but the oter ones are no lessthen 1.4 km and no more than 2.6 km. now put an f1 car with v16 turbo charged engine.
HOLY SHIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!
alinasser4 2 years ago 2
yeah lol

:19 longest straight in F1. :) Best section of track. RIP Hockenheimring.
yomi1896 3 years ago
this track should be brought back along with austria a1 ring as hikemaster said. the new tracks ie turkey etc are no comparison. f1 is about speed and how FAST a driver and car can get around a track. why is fia always trying to slow them down? people know the danger when they get involved with the sport?
vxnut 3 years ago 2
Its about the cost, higher risk=higher ammount of money have to get pumped in.
BUT the sponsors know that, all ppl know that is cost money, so they shud stop race then haha, better to drive go-kart cus the F-1 cars are runing slower every year that comes

if i were tilke, i would bring back old hockenheim, a1 ring, buenos aires, and braands hatch
this is like the greatest circuit ever made in f1, but now all of it thats left is the 1st straight, thx a lot tilke!!!
hikemaster33 3 years ago 12
The drivers get off to easy with mistakes now a days, with the big run off zones. I know safety comes first but they should still get stuck in gravel traps so they get penalized for mistakes. Instead they just run on the tarmac and dont even lose a place. Formula one is going the wrong way. It's all about pushing in and out laps to over take in the pits. I hope the rules over the next few years improve the over taking chances.
dumturks 4 years ago 3
cant agree more. but it wont change. f1 is a business not a sport
dmr1988 4 years ago 2
cars are much safer these days, so they move barriers back? I don't get that
F1Ram 3 years ago
i know, you look at kubica in canada and all he suffered was a sprained ankle and concusion. The old drivers use to love the thrills from all the risks. its what made f1.

Car is so un-stable!!lol
azernala 4 years ago
I think that's mostly the product of the low downforce they would have run at that track, as well as the lack of TC.

It's actually a pretty decent circuit, more challenging than Bahrain or Shanghai.
orrmate 4 years ago 7
this is what a track should be tearing through a forest at ridiculous speeds not some stupid space age modern piece of shite with tarmac run off areas you mays aswell get a carpark and paint some lines on it if you spin off your out thats how it should be keep em on their toes
dmr1988 4 years ago 5
i wish that bernie would wake up. good post yumeki.

this hermann tilke destroys everything. the new tracks (bahrain, shanghai, istanbul) are so boring.
hp1509 4 years ago 8
if i where the formula one boss, i let the old hockenheim return (the have to rebuild it than!), traction control en all other things would disapear, it will come to real driving and the fake circuits like bahrein (o my god i hate that track) and turkey would disapear, fans of formula one must come a lot closer to the drivers, cheaper tickets, no stupid wings and other things on the car, the cars would get a much nicer model
