HIV is transferred through fluids or contact with any mucus membrane of someone infected with the disease. HIV, untreated, or often even with treatment can become full-blown AIDS. AIDS and HIV both weaken your immune system so people don't die directly from it, they die from another infection they got that their immune system could no longer fight off like pneumonia.
Yes, he cheated. Most basketball players and athletes in general cheat but you could even get it from an infected person's blood

I also think you should read, at the very least, the Wikipedia article on HIV and AIDS. I think my basic information is correct, but this is the kind of stuff you should always get from a teacher, a book or a doctor. Don't wait for sex ed-- educate yourself about these diseases as soon as possible. HIV and AIDS are the most dangerous pandemics in modern society. The best defense is to abstain, or at least wearing protection. Don't cheat and sleep around and you'll be ok.
