  • That is nearly the same theme Handel used in his early Coburg Suite from 1704, called Sarabande and only transformed into a minor key !

  • Is this music structure a sort of canon?

Because I see the same scale over and over in progression.

    Beautiful!

  • @raonipaes I would say canonic. therefore like a cannon as you say :)

  • do these guys have a cd. the sound quality on this is amazing! thanks for the upload!

  • That was perfect.

  • Indeed this is a chaconne, never the less the performance is fantastic!

  • @henkvanderluit

whatever... the fact is that Purcell himself called it Passacaglia. Howgh.

  • @jancizmar Where did he call it a Passacaglia? It is called 'Chacone' (sic) in 'A Collection of Ayres' (posthumous, 1697, probably prepared by Daniel Purcell from his brother's [lost] manuscript).

  • Wonderful playing of DIVINE Purcell!!!! THx a lot! I'm looking for the "Music of the green men" from "The Fairy Queen"...

  • The double reeds are very special here. Every one a virtuoso.

  • Tak ještě jednou, nemohu jinak: absolutně nádherná verze, přirozená, neumělá, živoucí. Purcell je také o přirozenosti. Absolutně nádherné. Děkuji moc...

  • @mrAltan9

Diky:) s takovou skupinkou muzikantu to ani neso jinak...

  • Absolutely fantastic interpretation. Beautiful! Thank you!

  • The lutenist is truly awesome. Masterful in tonalisation. He seems to make always intelligent choice of timber and resonance. Years ago I wanted to take lute lessons but all the private instructors refused my harpsichord experience as good enough background whilst they insisted on violin, viola or cello as prequisite. I envied lute players ever since for their uncompromising devotion to reach such height in their artistic endevour.

  • Very nice! But, is a Chaconne, not a Passacaglia.

  • @Stephanorsk

... the fact is that Purcell himself called it Passacaglia. Howgh.

  • @jancizmar

    What is the diference?

  • @ahgblopes it is almost impossible to make any definite and general distinction between those two. Their treatment was always individual and varied widely. There is an interesting article in Grove on Chaconne and Passacaglia.

Further I would recommend to read a very nice summary of the problem in the book by Little/Jenne: Dance and music of J.S.Bach. page 199.

Wikipedia has also quite a good article on Chaconne - check it out - and don´t expect any clear answer...

  • Nice to see you on YouTube, Jan, even if only briefly.

  • wonderfull...

  • sehr schön :) ich mache mal werbung für die semioper im prinzregententheater münchen. dort wird es gerade aufgeführt!

  • wow! wonderful performance :)

  • that's just great music very well performed! love it!

  • A spirited performance.
