  • Thanks for the best instruction. I am starting to practice again. I willl look through your videos for the correct fingering techniques. As a child, all I wanted to do was to play fast. Bad move. I have to re-condition my fingering so the technique flows. This is so important, as you emphasized.

  • i love you

  • this was a super lesson, and very important to me personally.

  • A 3 legged table could work if the legs were arranged in an equilateral triangle

  • @msnhao yes, that's very obvious but the metaphor is that many inventions and discoveries are done accidentally, maybe it wasn't the most clever but it was just an example :)

  • I almost cried... ^^ ..soo awesome! I'mma show this to my Pianist Friend who is always discouraged every time he commits mistakes on the piano. :D

  • i wish you were my teacher!!

    you're great!

  • This is THE most important lesson - at least for me - as it teaches you how to practice and approach to practicing

  • best concept ever, it works for anything, like running, if i tell my self running 14K is easy, it is!

  • have you ever seen Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3, Op.30, d minor 1st Movement

some players make it look so simple

  • THE BRAIN STUFF YOU SAID WAS VERY INTERESTING, OHH AND OBVIOUSLY EVERYTHING YOU SAID ABOUT RELAXING, THANK YOU GOD BLESS ^^

  • I Think this should be video #2...right after having the Technique video moved to #1....get the mind right and the body will follow :)

  • What is red tape? 0.0

  • Best advice for playing a musical instrument ever, just started playing seriously and was destroying sheet music the other day, hope I continue to improve and thanks so much, it is easy!

  • I HATE FAKE FLOWERS

  • TEACHER I HAVE QUESTION

okay so my teacher told me to put the weight of your arm in you fingers so that the tone you produce in firm and your arm is relax so basically your finger is not relaxed and your arm is floppy and relaxed. However now i can only do it with my upper arm relaxed and whenever i try to have firm fingers my whole lower arm turns really tensee ): and then it doesnt feel relaxed, i know how it works (i think) and every time i see my teacher she tells me the samething -.-...

  • @Citroion68

oh yea and my queston is how do you relax your arm?

  • you're a great teacher

  • This lesson was amazing. Thank you so much for all these lessons.

  • If you play relaxed you can play faster aswell? I've been playing piano for a month now. I can already play Super Mario Air platform and Hungarian Rhapsody 2, but check this out /watch?v=AcZroW6fGcA. I find it hard to hit the right notes in that speed.

  • I needed to hear this lesson. It was like a pep talk. Thanks.

  • Thanks a lot bro this is cool and I loved it

I was wondering if i could ever play this instrument and you have just made it easy for my brain to get my hands working on it

    Thanks a Lot

    God Bless

  • Wow! The synapse thing REALLY kept me motivated to learn EVERYTHING I can at this age. Thank you SO MUCH!

  • good metaphor for practice w/ the road

  • that voice is exuperys little prince :P

  • Teacher you don't exactly have the capability to ask your students question (and receive answers) to control the direction in which they think to open up their minds to the level of critical thinking suggested in this video. Though, with time and chance perhaps this will happen on it's own. All this aside, I've learned a lot from what you've posted and I'm very happy I've been given the chance to expand my understanding of music and how it functions, purely because you chose to teach it.

  • greatly favor rote learning, which, although is classically effective, it further pushes people into a mindset off just what things should be, now while doing this, you post a video which tells us to take what you teach us and apply it our own way, this is a noble suggestion, but people don't really think quite like that, they'll continue to do as they're told; the way you tell them to. That is unless you support more critical thinking. The issue with this, is as you're an online (Continued)

  • Andrew, now, I've watched up to this point in both your Music Theory and Piano lessons, and you're a wonderful teacher, especially due to the fact that your lessons are followable by any type of viewer, but, the brain learns through different methods, mainly, rote learning and critical thinking, rote learning is pure memorization, while critical thinking builds off of what we understand and causes us to reach conclusions about the things which are being taught to us. Your methods (Continued)

  • Man, I applaud you standed up!

just a very small handful of person (I hope I'll get there one day =) have the same patience and passion for music at the point of spending your own free to teach music, both theory and practical, to people you probably won't ever know in your life...

just if the world could have more people like you it'd be a much better place to live ^^

again, thank you very much for your tutorials!! =D

  • can you tell me some great starting/ beginner songs to learn? Thanks for taking time on doing these lesssons, I'm going to watch and learn 'em all :)

  • 5:56 final fantasy 6 airship music

  • and the piano suddenly played by itself! haha. jk. ^_^

  • 1 synapsis, 2+ synapsES :P

Actually you are great! I love learning more and more!

  • dude i freaking love your hair XDD

  • I love your videos and I am very thankful, but I feel like it would be way easier to stay focused if you were a native american.

  • you need to refine your analogies...

while they eventually convey your point...

    your videos would greatly improve...

also you seem to drive the point home too hard.

most the people looking to learn an instrument are aware of the emotional tie between music and the soul...

    just simple critiques...not an assault...

    good luck.

  • I enjoyed listening to you - refreshing ideas & humorous at times. Thanks a million. Regards, Pat

  • Hey Andrew,

I am 43 yrs old and wanting to play the piano and I found your lessons. Man.... in the first five lessons I am already way in front!!! Who said "you cant teach an old dog new tricks?"

Well done mate.... you are a true Champion!!!

  • "Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen"

    -Emerson

The universe includes your very own mind!

  • i really liked your example on repetition. thanks Andrew.

  • can you give us examples/youtube links of the pianists you are talking about at 14m who do five things with one motion? thanks

  • how many years i need to learn the piano perfectly?

  • @SIMONDUKEN Hi, it depends on you. 2 to 3 years probably. if you're talking about perfection.

but you can be a good pianist in less than a year, if you practice everyday.

perfection is sometimes all about mastering the focus and your mind, on what your doing. it's sometimes the measure on how badly you want to master playing piano.

  • @chuamishael thank u very much!!!im 18 years old...i would like to learn...but i think that is late to learn it now...

  • can you actually show us a link to one of your performances? after all these lessons I'm yearning to hear you perform.

  • @covertquest :) Just pop over to my channel and click on "Andrew Furmanczyk Performances" it's a playlist of my performances ^_^

  • @Lypur @Lypur Andrew, I bow down and salute you. For the beautiful artist you've nurtured in yourself, it's nothing but amazing. I've been appreciated as a singer/performer in India, but your performances and guides have left me yearning to purchase a piano and loose my heart and soul to playing it. I also play the tabla and hope to pursue piano training and extend my expression some day. Thanks for your tutorials and long-live the spirit. (musicwith dot in)

  • @Lypur you are a genius you have ex plained & made it so much easier to accept my limitations of a 53 year old piano student but to practice as many hours as I can to clear the roads god bless you

  • The piano is your BITCH... Kay? Sounds awesome ^_^

  • I've been playing for years but I never thought of that technique! I tried it and it worked well!!!! I used to avoid difficult and challenging pieces because I was afraid to make mistakes. Everytime I play where there are people watching, I would hear a voice in my mind that says "you're gonna press a wrong note and it's gonna be embarassing and things like "you can't play this piece perfectly" what have you." But you made it go away! Thanks a bunch!!!! Please keep it up! I love all your videos!

  • AMAZING !!

  • This is just what I need...

  • Andrew you did not mentioned about the kind hair style when you play the piano. Like yours?

  • Thank you so much, I ve learned so much from you, god bless you

  • your the best piano teacher in the world, im learning so much with you thank you thank you thank you

  • I am learning so much from you, you are an amazing teacher, thank you so much for sharing your time and talent.

  • it's great that you show people how to play piano... it's really adorable :D

compared to your first video you look very tired^^

but thanks for spending time with your 'pupils'^^

    greets

  • Haha, I love the hair.

  • i love your video's , i have been using the ezplay books do you think thats good

  • so much zen

  • Awesome lesson

    Thanks Andy

  • Love it, the anology was great and i'm getting better and "KISS THE RAIN" is EAZYYY, haha, not yet but soon will be

  • very good sending-the-message-through-the-amazon analogy

  • This is a great concept. Those of you who like this should check out the book "effortless mastery" by Kenny Werner.

  • wow you great

  • I'm 5 minutes in right now. I hope you're onto something Andrew

  • Great way of thinking about piano playing - there is so much truth in what you are telling!

  • I'm currently learning Un Sospiro with ZERO piano experience. It just takes practice and determination. This guy knows what he's talking about.

  • Thanks again!

  • Man, you talk way to much! Never got to the painolesson, I just wanna sea you play and learn!

  • @Taurusintomusic 'sea' haha, SEE

  • training your mind and having patiences is just as important as learning how to hit the keys... sometimes maybe even MORE important.

  • Perhaps you weren't listening to the lesson. He did play, and he spent nearly 27 minutes teaching some concepts for you to learn.

  • You smart, Andrew..you have a lot of parables in teaching your music concept. You have a charisma.

  • Dude! round about 4:45, was that the FF6 airship music?

  • 5:50, that is (airship music?)

  • It's Chopin's Polonaise

  • ok i like to simplify things, but this video just made me a better human..thank you!

  • I can't get the picture out my head now of the guy sending the message through the forest. And all the paths I've dug out the trees and bushes by making mistakes with fingering. I think it helps a lot

  • I love your hair ,bro! lol

  • i think is very hard mantain this hair (my english poor -__")for this final result

  • I know this is probably not the right place to ask but hey...

Hi can anyone tell me what 'echo dynamics' means - I know what the 2 mean words seperately obviously - its suggested in a piece Im learning.

And what is a musical curve in terms of scales... is it where you get louder as you go up and softer as you go down?

Anyway, great videos Andrew thanks =D

  • Andrew, I'm confident that you could teach anything in an excellent fashion. We need more teachers like you in our schools!

  • aww thanks! :) actually, i applied for a job teaching music at a school here, guess what they told me? Even though I have teaching qualifications from the royal conservatory of music. I needed to go through a few years of college just to teach something I've been practicing, teaching and learning for the better part of 20 years. ^_^ Anyway, I'm not motivated enough to teach in a school to bother with years of red tape. So I won't be teaching in schools.

  • It's paradoxical sometimes, the world of academia...at least you should know that you're a wonderful, ^patient, and ^passionate teacher that could do great teaching ANYTHING.

    * ^ indicates qualities that teachers tend to lack from my personal experience

  • @Lypur Your better than any teacher I have had for music:)

  • @Lypur

Oh, the tradgedy of modern society. The best teachers arent found at the established places of learning, as Lypur has articulated.

  • @TommyNavid

tragedy? hardly, we can get it for free on the internet now its accessible to anyone who needs/wants it thanks to people like Lypur

  • @unterlord , no one can teach 'anything' ......plus, in schools you need to be a lot more systematic and careful. Not to take anything away from Andrew, who offers an excellent service to the learners community, and for free. I too am learning from him and I thank him for the lessons

  • Thank you, Andrew. Your lessons are perfect. Your metaphores are wonderful too! This lesson is great for anyone, not just those who aspire to be great pianists

  • Well I appreciate your comment back. But I self taught my self the full verision on Fur elise, K545, Canon in D, I compose many songs that are at a high level, im not meaning to be bragging but im definatly not flaunting around. My fingering is incorrect I know but piano lessons are too expensive for me and so my brain is clicked correctly right now so i'm working on it. Ill be postig videos of me playing piano soon you cansee for yourself.

    ~kulunaki808

  • chill out, try learning full pieces, like harder pieces and then we'll see how far your raw talent gets you. It takes practice and dedication, not relentless flaunting of, seemingly nonexistant, talent.

  • u r awesomeee!!xDD

  • sounds good.. not just for people who want to play the piano

  • such a good video. Personally, what I finds that works best for me is just cone yourself. The music speaks, all you have to do it listen to it when you play (with everything this video has) and you won't hear the "voices". Just something I picked up along the way. But again, you sir are bloody amazing.

  • you are a genius mind and a patient teacher. thank you!

  • I didn't realise that Napoleon Dynamite played the piano! Gosh.....

  • Comment removed

  • Exelente!, se agradecen las clases y tu tiempo al mundo, que ama la musica...

  • Thanks!!! I agree with your coments. Some of them look simple and basic but they are very very important, and we should never forget them.

    Very interesting!!!

  • Thank you very much for taking the time to explain these concepts. I play the violin and find it very useful to apply these ideas when I practice. Very encouraging!! :)

  • Thank You very much for best lesson, Dear Sir.

  • Muchas Gracias!!

Ud es el mejor profesor de piano que he tenido en toda mi vida!!

  • Thank you very much for all the tutorials, I've been self taught in piano 5 years now. I am quite good, not great but as you say piano takes alot of practice. Initially I thought there wasn't much more I could learn from watching these videos but I was misteaken. I have developed a few habits here and there which such as fingering that makes learning excerpts that extra bit harder but your videos have good tips that help with that (and a good sense of humour).

    Thank you very much

  • time is the forth dimension? i didn't know that.

    you're wonderful to me

i've learned so much already, thanks

  • :) thanks!

  • @Lypur That isn't actually necessarily true. What you're talking about is more spacetime than the fourth dimension.

The fourth dimension is to three dimensions what 3D is to 2D. Of course it's not possible to imagine a 4d object for a human, however we can project the shadow of a 4d object in our 3d world. In the same way you can draw a cube on a piece of paper, it will then be the shadow of a 3d object on a 2d plane.

Then again I'm no expert, it's just my understanding of it.

  • time or spacetime is considered the fourth dimension in special and general relativity

  • your beautiful. thanks man

  • i love your analogies XD

  • lol nice metaphor towards the end of the video

    you're really a great teacher

i've learned soo much from you without even meeting you in person

your videos really have helped me with my quest to learn the language of music

i wish u could teach me in person as ur student though...i can imagine how fun that would be :D

  • Are you saying that it's all about brain work that makes are fingers do what we want them to do?

  • I wanted to learn to play the piano when I was young (I'm 34yrs now) but never had the opportunity. Now, I'm trying to read music but it takes me a lot more effort to learn the basics, having formed some static habits over the years. Plus I feel tense whenever I see those innocent hammer-heads on a staff. The bass clef is my nemesis. Can you suggest something for late learners like me?

Bless your soul for finding time to help others develop their music talents. I really appreciate it!

  • I'd say the biggest problem for late learners is they feel upset for " all those wasted years" and they try to rush things, not to mention they expect to much of themselves too quickly which leads to disappointment. The most importaint thing is to take your time, enjoy the learning curve as much as you can and be patient with yourself, it will take time, but if you keep correcting yourself and staying ontop of things you will eventually develop the right skills :)

  • after this video I feel sooo relax thank you dear friend:) beautiful video! You are a fantastic person!!!

  • You're too kind! :D Someone of your amazing skill must have known all of this already. :) I appreciate your nice comment!! Thank you!

  • I'am so late ...sorry...Thank YOU fantastic friend for this reply.:)

  • Just had my second class. My teacher stresses me with hand / arm movements and I just really fail to be able to do what she wants of me even tho she explained it like 10 times. I'm failing to find the "natural" movement and trying to follow it too consciously for now (which I don't like, if I don't do it naturally somehow it feels I think). It's the thing I struggle most with. :(

Anyway, I think this video helped, watching you. Maybe I'll find the trick after some more hours of trying.

    Thanks!

  • This and previous video (about posture) together, I meant. :)

  • the natural movment is the most fluid and stress free movment. ^_^ it takes time to find it though. keep working hard!

  • You really present a lot of really valuable information, and I think you have thought through all aspects of piano playing very thoroughly. If you really apply what you are teaching I think you can become a great concert pianist.

About fingering, are you saying to learn a single fingering for each song or are there universal patterns which can be applied to everything?

  • thank you for the nice comment! ^_^ concerning fingering, there are some universal ways to finger some types of figures such as a 4 note chord or an alberti bass pattern. Each piece is unique and will require a unique way of fingering in some way, some piece require more thought than others of course. The big rule with fingering is, it should make the piece as easy to play as possible and also give you great tone.

  • Thank you for the reply! I am starting to delve deeper into this topic and found there is an entire field called "piano technique" (which I'm sure you are well aware of). It is things like this that I wish I had heard about from my piano teachers as a kid, but I will just have to make up for lost time now. Thank you for the inspiration.

  • so true, thanks for the reminder!

  • You are great man!!!

  • lol this is so true xD this method applies also on everything we are doing in our life

  • this was an awesome vid thanks again for taking the time to put these fantastic vids together.

  • i think andrew is the most genuine teacher as far as learning how to play piano is concerned in the net. the language used is layman, unpretentious and there is just no hidden agenda why he is doing this - except to share his knowledge with us.

he didnt sound authoritative but rather just a regular guy who is just eager to impart his knowledge. he sounds like our friend who wants the best for us.

andrew, thank you so much for this.

  • Andrew, Thank you very much for lesson 17 and 18. I am going to apply both of those major points. Tell myself it is easy and relax and just enjoy the practice.

    I admire your generosity

    Marie

  • i was about to give up, but now i know why ive been struggling so much, thanks again.

  • you're welcome ^_^

  • wow

    your a really good teacher!

    thanks! :)

  • it's all about practice, staying relaxed and the most important being positive....

  • tnx for this cool video... ^_^

We must live easy too =]

  • This iz Really Important!! if ur tense u cant play right,,u just have to Flow<< you ever notice how when u really think about what u play u mess up,,but when you dont think about it u play well<<

  • this is the best episode. the most useful. Im always afraid of making mistakes. I dunno why.... =/

  • man you are so right about that voice in the head that tells you "you cant do it"...thanks for the tipps to keep a positive attitude towards the instrument......or towards life philosophicly.

  • Relaxation foooor the win!! RWAOOooOAR

  • sooooooooo random XD

  • RelaaaaaaaaAAax!! i was just joking :P LOL ahahahaha

  • ah i miss this vid LOL

  • amazing lesson, really - is uncommon to get such a deep and wide range of informations in just a piano lesson

you're great teacher I must say, keep up

  • if he can do it so can we! yay :)

  • In cases such as this, time is of the essence in ensuring that the legitimate expectations about the administration of justice are not unnecessarily undermined. So the teacher quickly and timely admonished the sloppy pupil. Where the liberty of an individual is at stake, certainty should always replace uncertainty as a matter of urgency and priority. Foreigners are singled out as they may be hard put to understand the implications in this regard. The teacher is applauded for the good job.

  • nice hair

  • thanks

  • so basically, when you hit a note or a chord you make a connection with the piano, and the emotion driving the action effects the sound, so the piano is an extension of yourself in melodic harmony, so player and the piano become one so to speak. right?

  • very good! You get it.

  • lol :) I see we've got the discussion of philosophical chat here, cheers man, ;)

    all the very best,

    Charlie

  • This is one of the best ones... THanks

  • 22:44 do snakes really eat messages? come on that's no news :-)!

  • I can't believe I watched this entire lesson. Argh.

  • please if you don't mind do one lesson for "god father theme". thanks. m.

  • it's more like a philosophy class/...haha

  • Great video Lypur!

  • i talk to my self and answer back..i even have arguements...but not long ones ..hehe

  • You know this is not only a piano lesson, but a how to live lesson.

It was so interesting listening to this, and believe me, I'm going to start to tell myself everything is easy!

    Thank you so much!

  • You are so cute. And yes I'm gay.

  • @_@mr dress up... no idea who you are talking about xD

  • o.o You are crazy...

But in a good educational piano way xD

  • nice! kind of like Mr Dress up was? ^_^

  • are u from Germany?

  • I'm a mix from many different countries; england, scotland, poland, russia, germany to name a few. ^_^

  • Could you do a segment on improvisation?

  • Lypur - You are SUCH a good teacher! Watching your videos has inspired me to get back to playing and practicing. I hadn't touched the piano for over 2 years after major life crises, and I'd forgotten what a lifeline it is. As I'm 'middle-aged', I've probably only got about 20 synapses left, but I'll work them hard! Thanks again. (BTW. I think your hair is fab..)
