Really enjoy this review of yours. Grants Batman stories have always truck me as his attempts to take all Batman stpries of the past and move the character into the future, which is why I enjoyed your review. You came to a similar conclusion...:)
whuh? Have whatever opinion you like on Sin City, but calling it "torture porn" is completely off the wall. "Film-noir-porn" or "Hard-boiled-porn", sure. "Crime-Porn" even. Torture Porn, through?
Yeah, I agree with RoggBatt. I find the more violent, Millerish Batman much more childish than, say, Batman in space (I'm talking more abot the idea than the execution here).
The kids are the ones more drawn to that kind of stuff, probably because it still feels forbidden to them.
Also, I hated all that first person narration in the 90's Batman. "He's younger. Faster. Stonger. Younger. Younger. Also: Think I'm a bit senile." Would you shut up and punch that criminal, Bruce?
I learned to read via inherited Silver Age comics (stuff like Action, Superboy, Lois Lane). I'm only in my thirties, but I still have all those comics and I think they're brilliant! What I'm embarrassed by is some of the crap that I bought in the early 90s, (post DK Returns/Watchmen,)where every book was trying too hard to be vengeful and grim n gritty. I'd rather read my old 60s stories over Sin City torture-porn any day of the week.
What I've noticed is that with Grant Morrison, it's almost always best to read his entire run/story as close together as possible.
My personal example; I hated New X-Men as I read it month to month. But then, on a whim, and because it was, in fact, Grant Morrison, I picked up the three hardcover collections and read them all together and it was fantastic.
Invisibles and Doom Patrol as well are written in a way that mandate reading in its entirety in as few sittings as possible for best results

What's wrong with the campy 60s stuff?
