Cooney doesn't deserve respect for his efforts against Holmes just because he went 13 rounds. There were more than a few relatively unknowns that went just as far. Holmes usually knocked them out in the middle to late rounds.

As another person stated in this forum, if Cooney was not a good boxer, he could never have lasted 13 rounds with Holmes.

Yes, Holmes proved to be a better boxer but even he said that if it has been any other boxer, Cooney would have been champion that night. But let's not forget that Holmes had not lost a fight when he and Gerry met. It's a shame that many people lost respect for Cooney after that loss. Probably one of the greatest fighters never to have won a championship.

Three things re: Holmes/Cooney.

1. Cooney got introduced last, which is not the way it's done with challengers,

2. President Reagan had a phone line set up to Cooney's dressing room, in anticipation of a live-to-air congratulatory post-fight phone call. He didn't bother to ring and congratulate Holmes,

3. Both fighterss got about $10m each, a massive purse. But Holmes was bitter, as champion, he expected more than parity with Cooney saying 'I don't get no endorsements like he does'.

To MPA2000, I don't think "America" ever called Gerry Cooney "the great white hope" I think the news media did that. I think that was to sell tickets and piss people off. It accomplished that. Gerry Cooney was a fighter that had some success in his youth. He was totally left handed unlike some of the other comments made. He was pretty much like a one handed left handed fighter. He really didn't stand a chance against the jabbing Larry Holmes. I hope he doesn't wind up dying early like Quarry.
