the point is he is in his prime. Keepers especially are half as good in their middle 30's as they are in their 20's. After 45 tests Gilly was averaging 60 and was the best keeper anyone had ever seen. Read his autobioggraphy even he knew he was well below his best by the end, which is why he retired. Gilly in his prime is better then any other keeper batsmen by a mile. Having said that Mccullum probally is the 2nd best gloveman.

I can't believe people so easily overlook Sangakkara. Yes he's four years McCullum's senior and McCullum will continue to improve for the next couple of years but their figures don't match up anywhere along the line, even Gilchrist's figures are lesser than Sangakkara's. Yes Gilchrist was dynamic and changed the face of wicket keeping for the entire game of cricket, and was a stunning player, but in terms of sheer quality, especially in tests, I'm not even sure Gilly rivals Sanga.

I think it's YOU that clearly hasn't been watching him. Sanga goes about his business in a very underplayed manner and is a highly intelligent cricketer. McCullum may be slightly more agile and look more eye catching behind the stumps but Sangakkara is equally as adept. His glove work to spin bowling is unsurpassed, as videos on youtube will account for. Also he is possibly, and in my mind, the best keeper to have ever batted in test cricket, less destructive than Gilly but arguably superior.
