Its true that Punjabi Language dates back before Sikhsim but its the Sikhs who kept it alive and rocking and today its the most popular language, of not only India but World.
I think that is a bit of a stretch to say, lot many Hindus know Punjabi in N. India compared to the population of Sikhs. But, surely the Sikh culture especially Bhangra songs has made it extremely popular in India.
And hey, Sikhs were always quite popular in India except for the 1-1/2 decade of turmoil in Punjab.

Well, I have no Jealousy from Sikh. On the contrary I appreciate that Sikhs adopted Punjabi as their own language and are prospering it. The question was to whom the language originally belongs to, and not people of which religion practices it the most. It is spoken by some 2.83% (2001) of Indian population.
37% of Punjab population is Hindu and I am sure they can read/write/speak Punjabi. So, your accusation on me absolutely is uncalled for.

So, what ever they can learn at home, they would... Each state language is compulsory in India. So, it is no surprise that many, including Sikh children who go to English medium schools can't read/write Punjabi, but speak.
