Great Vibe. Develop your finger style. Lose the pick. It is incumbering your melody line. Find a good classical method. The Giuliani 120 studies for the right hand come to mind. All of your arpeggios are ascending. This will give you variety. in your arpeggios.
@avyanez Hehe ... Is that a joke ?? Why would he wanna lose the pick? Many (if not most) of the greatest (jazz) guitarists in the world use picks (in combination with the 3 remaining fingers.. AKA the hybrid method). Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Bill Frisell just to name some...
@aniss1001 Yes and they all play with a sloppy right hand. The pick is a crutch and only encumbers them. You might go look up the suggestion I made before you make an uniformed remark.

I luv jazz. I luv great playing. I luv any music that makes me think &/or feel, including my own. I luv the fact that those who make provocative comments, such as some of those below, based on their own limitations, feel okay to litter others' minds with their dissent. But, in time, with luck and perseverance, they may discover the real in others and themselves. What a planet. We can catch up to and analyze comets, yet many would rather crap on each other & shoot each other down; go figure...
I am a drummer who has played accoustic guitar for years now. I have just started to play electric guitar (which, from my standpoint, is a different instrument) and I have been looking for guitar players and sounds that would inspire me. John Stowell has given me both such things. Thank you John and thanks TrueFireTV for posting.
nice clean guitar playing dead on note accurate ,,nice job.was refered to listen to you by Paul Weiss,,also have guitar work here on youtube as well if you type Bill Piekarski in search area in youtube can listen to some of my work as well thanks and have a awesome day
I think a lot of people here don't get this because they're guitar players with preconceived notions about what "solo guitar" should or shouldn't be. They assume the melody is the chordal accompaniment. Why can't a solo guitar performance be linear as often as it is chordal? Let's remember this: watch?v=dZn_VBgkPNY&feature=related . Now, ask the question: would we have such a hard time appreciating this if we weren't all jealous guitar players?
To like a song or not is a matter of taste. But as a professional guitar player,I think John has fabulous technique, originallity, good taste. If you check other videos that will be clear his outstanding playing.Regards.
beautiful harmonization but I don't think the song works well as a chord melody arrangement. Rather see a soloist playing or singing the melody with that rich guitar accompaniement
This guys pretty good! lol Its nice to know a little of everything for those special moments. Go from this to travis picking then play some bop and maybe a little rock or metal and everyone will be delightfully confused.
John Stowell is a brilliant musician, let alone guitarist. His harmony here is quite dark and haunting, but it's obviously a soundscape that he likes to play in. Lush chords and tensions all over the place are a Stowell trademark, as well as his guitar neck pointing to the sky. You're a true Jazz artist John, and thanks for those guitar lessons in Santa Fe all those years ago.
Maybe John Stowell's music is not your cup of tea, but he genuinely is world class, and an incredibly diligent and devoted student (and teacher) of the instrument. I knew him peripherally more than twenty years ago in Portland, and heard him play dozens of times. I was always astounded by his comprehensive understanding of harmony, and he's only gotten better. Why waste time bickering when there's music to listen to?
He's a talented player, no question. I've just never seen anyone play at their ear before. And the looks on his face, you'd think he was doing some kind of crazy bends or serious rock riffs!
is it me or is his E, A, and D a little skinny... maybe its just cause im so used to seein hybrid slinks. holy cow, that les paul lookin 'tar sounds creepy. i want it..
"Sorry folks, but I can't find an interesting melody in there", which tells us more about your limitations than about those of this clearly gifted player... pfffff!!
@Pan3405 I disagree, there is a very interesting melody (and harmonic arrangement) in there, to my ears. Nobody listening to this (or anything else) needs you to tell them what there is and is not to be found in there. So instead of crassly generalising and saying "there's no interesting melody" at least have the integrity to say "Sorry folks, but I can't find an interesting melody in there", which tells us more about your limitations than about those of this clearly gifted player.
@Pan3405 This guy isn't even close to a guitar hero of mine besides gay people can still make good music, and you're the one who started with the insults so don't blame me.
@Pan3405 Maybe I am. Is there something wrong with being gay? Is that what you think? Or maybe you're just some closet case who shouts faggot at people to distract from the fact that all you want is cock!
@Pan3405 That isn't true at all. Not only do they not dominate the industry (not even close) most the really tasteless stuff is done by straight people. (ie Poisin, Motley Crue)
@Pan3405 That comment was not meant for you but for that gay-bashing creep you argued with. Sorry it ended up in the wrong place. On a related note, he IS scared, hence the homophobia, of course.
@gormarx he's pretty much just a provocative troll. There may be some logical headspace from which he was coming in the first place, but by now he mostly just wants a reaction out of people on whom for whatever reason he looks down upon. It's a weird forum for that kind of thing but I guess this is the internet after all. I don't think anybody on a jazz guitar chord melody posting board would call anything "super gay" and actually mean it. If they do, they should probably just go shed Nature Boy

theres no need for half of those stretches . you can find the same unisons with far less effort . . i doubt this guy is classically trained .. i can tell this from his playing .. he making a simple harmonic piece overly complicated .
actually from the bottom up it's B F# G D so it would be B aeolian and a drop 2 Gmaj7 first inversion. I think it could be argued that it does function as the drop 2 considering he starts the phrase with it. Or maybe you know something I don't know.
beautiful! What a great touch he has and the harmony and melody are awesome!
