  • Cartmen love this video!! respect my authority fucker!!!

  • I met John at 1 of his gigs years ago & thanked him for the song since it always reminds me of 'that 1 relationship'. He laughed, said "you're welcome" and then went "You did know Dave Alvin wrote it, right?" lol, Wanted to crawl into a hole! But John was uber cool about it all. He even signed my Beyond & Back double CD! I treasure the CD & that memory to this day.

  • Unfortunately, Dave's solo performances of it just never measure up to the X experience you hear here. If you like it, check out Dave's song "Dry River". Another great take on a similar theme.

  • This version was included in the deluxe remaster released a couple years ago. The original is terrific as well. Interesting to note that the song was written by Dave Alvin of Blasters fame, who replaced Billy Zoom for this record, and still occasionally performs with them as the Knitters. Stellar song, great performances all around, awesome stuff. theme, and Dave pulls it off well.

  • @redshift96 I just saw Dave perform in Seattle and he frigging brought me to tears. He wrote the song and fucking brought down the house.

  • I saw them in Seattle in the 80's . My friends were listening to pop , they never wanted to explore the punk scene or listen to rock . Im sure they are all still narrow minded dipshits .

  • very good

  • Play this every 4th of July while drinking a cold beer and shooting fireworks. If only there were some Mexican kids in the neighborhood it would be perfect.

  • Sounds better than the album version, less polished, sounds more like X ;)

  • I luv this song song so much! Amazing, amazing lyrics!

  • this songs great !so happy i found it!

  • Dave Alvin is playing guitar on this recording, and on this album as a whole. Billy Zoom had left, and Tony Gilkyson had yet to join.

  • @406Chino: i think dave alvin wrote this song, as well.

  • fucking wonderful. when i was 16. fucking wonderful now that i'm 37

  • fucking wonderful.

  • Mexican kids!

  • "She gives me her cheek, when I want her lips"

  • ay yo Bey X

  • Cool to hear this..........my friend Alvin Clark produced See How We Are...needless to say it's neat to hear an early version of this tune!

  • this reminds me of being a kid! Mom and dad played this every 4th, on vinyl no less!!

  • Man grew up in socal. Loves this band Who do I have to talk to to get them In the Rock and Roll Hall or fame; or would that be selling out

  • Can anyone tell me where I can find this song...what album/record? I know its not on their first two albums....and yes, what a fantastic song!!!!

  • @smidge1220 The song is from the album "See How We Are' Original Release Date: 1987

  • Still to be released on cd...

  • @smidge1220 The demo is on Beyond & Back.

  • First heard this song when it came out, we were living in Maine. It's a tradition to listen to every 4th of July!

  • @KitCat7557 great to hear that the beautiful tune's of X ( a Los Angeles band) are getting all the way to the other coast. It's a great song!

  • I'm probably the least patriotic person you'll ever meet, t but Holy Kripes!! I *LOVE* this song - Heard it at the Whiskey - so many Julys ago...

  • Comment removed

  • "X's version of a Christmas song."- John Doe I agree, it's not the 4th of July without this song!

  • Wouldn't be the The Fourth without hearing this song!

  • Have loved this song for some 20 4th's of July! Sad, sweet and not really very patriotic. Then again...

  • "Whatever happened I apologize,

So dry your tears and baby walk outside,

    it's the Fourth of July"
