real real real;..no fake movies, like in 2011....better stop making movies in 2011.,or do it like this ,the expensive way with real decors, real costumes,,a real handmademovie
Without a doubt, this is Morricone at his most powerful. Grab that awesome shot of the five dusters swaying in the wind, followed by the brilliant introduction of Frank's face. After having played a goodie in most of his films, portraying this sadistic killer was quite a departure for Fonda and yet, it worked perfectly. Leone and Morricone, what a combination of geniuses!! Their contributions to cinema deserve all the praises they get!!
If the young boy wouldn't have been killed, the harmonica would have been shot during the final and the redhead boy would have become the new "harmonica" (probably a drunk man considering the whiskey bottle...) it's a cycle.
Just saw the movie and i am wondering why i didn't see it before..wow...amazing...the best..such a powerful scene and with no dialogues..but Fonda's eyes say it all..Leone is a master...This is a master class in film making. Every scene is a best scene ever.
one of the greatest scenes in the history of film.the evil of Henry Fonda's character is portrayed with absolute clarity. todays directors should take lessons from Sergio Leone.no wasted dialogue or movement.magnificent.
Poor little kid...... I thought at first sight that he was the only survivor of this family and he was going to revenge when he will be grown up. He was so innocent.... made me cry a lot just by seeing the scene cutting off when Frank shoots.....:-( Anyway it's a great movie.
@gitane1976 Thats what is so great about this scene at the time it came out. Particularly movies made in the US the kid would almost have to live. But not in this movie and Frank would have let the kid live if his stupid henchman hadnt said Franks name....but Frank is cold blooded and no one could dispute that after he fired the gun....pure genius.
They should have dyed the actors' hair. I would have had more sympathy if it wasn't just a bunch of gingers. Or I don't know, did they use gingers on purpose so we'd feel sympathetic to the killers or what? Films are so complexicated.
@obiefive8 My comment was in response to one of the top comments saying that the characters were ginger. The characters are Irish, so there's a bigger chance that they would be ginger.
Everyone posting here that Fonda is remembered - CAUSE OF LEONE - as "Frank"...... well on the contrary there are many, MANY folks also remember Fonda as "Mr Roberts" and "Juror #8" (12 Angry Men) and Wyatt Earp and Tom Joad.
Just because *YOU* remember Fonda as "Frank" doesn't make it universal: YOU SPEAK FOR YOURSELVES.
Back then, people got pissed off at Henry Fonda and Sergio Leone for this scene. Henry Fonda in the people's eyes was always the good guy and Sergio corrupted that image with this scene. But this movie turned out to be another Sergio Masterpiece and the audience had to accept it for what it was. One of the great western movies of our time and Henry Fonda was just acting....!

This is my favorite scene. My father's is the opening one. But I think this, the opening, and the flashback are the three top ones in the film.
