I don't believe most commenters here understand China at all. Everyone is either China will crush US or US will crush China. Both are based on the assumption China wants a conflict to happen. That is NOT TRUE. I'm a Chinese living in Europe for 11 years now, and I've seen the best and worst of both sides. China WILL NOT attack unless provoked. The Chinese people believe in besting their opponents through peaceful means.

The US in my opinion should not take this action offensively. I am sure my country is building these weapons for defensive purposes, I hate it when the US complains about other countries building up they're military but they still have the worlds highest military budget despite not being at war with any major power. I think that we were niave to think that because we have a global reach militarily that other nations especially those that find themselves within that reach wouldn't develope countermessures and in turn a global reach of their own.

US navy can attack any Chinese coastal city with ease. But China has not talked about such threat because it is a matured nation with long history. Chinese only use force to keep their country united and defence it. In fact, they are not very interested in the world outside China. You forgot about the giant Russian Type 65 torpedo developed back in the 70's. It is designed to kill US supercarriers. It can be armed with a 1,200 lb conventional warhead or a 20KT nuclear warhead (the same yield as the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bomb) and swim up to 100 kms at cruise speed with a top speed of 50 knots. PRC could easily develop their own. A single sub firing a spread of these giant torpedoes could sink a carrier without detection.

ok firstly in time of peace the aircraft carrier has a bubble of about 250 miles in diameter which any surface or air threat is seen by the e2 and can be checked out by cap aircraft. in times of war that bubble can increase anywhere from 250 to 500 miles

The only problem with shooting at a US aircraft carrier is that not only are you shooting at the carrier, you are shooting at her protective fleet....
So, not only must you overwhelm the carrier's defensive systems, you must overwhelm the defense systems of around 10 or more other ships.

I'll answer this question right now. NO. There are countermeasures on Aircraft carriers specificially designed to destroy an incoming missile. First it has missiles whose sole purpose is to intercept other missiles. Then as a secondary defense in case the missiles fail to intercept they have highly accurate AA gatling guns to shoot down these missiles. Unless they fire like 20 missiles all at once our carriers are safe.

You forgot about the giant Russian Type 65 torpedo developed back in the 70's. It is designed to kill US supercarriers. It can be armed with a 1,200 lb conventional warhead or a 20KT nuclear warhead (the same yield as the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bomb) and swim up to 100 kms at cruise speed with a top speed of 50 knots. PRC could easily develop their own. A single sub firing a spread of these giant torpedoes could sink a carrier without detection.

ok firstly in time of peace the aircraft carrier has a bubble of about 250 miles in diameter which any surface or air threat is seen by the e2 and can be checked out by cap aircraft. in times of war that bubble can increase anywhere from 250 to 500 miles
so firstly the enemy has to get in range of the carrier past the barcap then any sam systems and aegis isnt just good its amazing so a carrier aint a easy target maybe for subs but not missiles

The only problem with shooting at a US aircraft carrier is that not only are you shooting at the carrier, you are shooting at her protective fleet....
So, not only must you overwhelm the carrier's defensive systems, you must overwhelm the defense systems of around 10 or more other ships.

@memadmax69 on top of that during a war time that those defense ships would be doubled. to hit the side of the carrier you may have to destroy 2 - 3 layers of ships that are used as barriers... if the missile fly's higher to go over the ships then down on the carrier it would be easier to shoot down. in a surprise attack China may get 1 or 2 carriers... but then you have 9 more on top of that the stvol carriers and allied carriers. China just likes the attention..

Just FYI:
The "Carrier Killer" missile is a BALLISTIC missile.
It acts like the larger nuclear tipped ICBMs. It's launched into orbit, before it comes down vertically over it's target. It does not travel "past" battle groups.
A ballistic missile's Hypersonic speed when descending, means that no current conventional system in the world (guns or missiles), can target, track, and neutralize this system before it hits the intended target.

I'll answer this question right now. NO. There are countermeasures on Aircraft carriers specificially designed to destroy an incoming missile. First it has missiles whose sole purpose is to intercept other missiles. Then as a secondary defense in case the missiles fail to intercept they have highly accurate AA gatling guns to shoot down these missiles. Unless they fire like 20 missiles all at once our carriers are safe.

@juan1970541 the whole point of a long ranged Anti ship ballistic missile is you can fire it away from more than 1000 miles away, its execute stage velocity is mach 10 which is undefensible. Chinese submarine has pop'd up in the middle of US battlegroups and within simple torpedo before back in 06/07 and again in 09, see Kittyhawk and Chinese sub.

I don't think U.S can win the war against China, especially that the Russians still hate the U.S and who got the support of Russia? of course China. U.S gov. should learn to stop going around bossing other countries. They might taste their own medicine.

We will jam your radars, take out your air defense, destroy much of China's ground forces, air defenses and communication by air, deploy the ground forces, take Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and other cities along the coast, hunt down the rest of the resistance and perserve the military that has surrendered, set up a Democratic government, train their army and feed their people, liberate Tibet, set up a good military defense force for China, and leave.
