If you say Fignon was a doper, then LeMond, Hinault, Kelly, Roche were too, which is nonsense.
Fignon was one of the greats and a member of the old guard (Hinault, LeMond, Kelly, to name a few) of cycling who were the true hard men of the sport, before big salaries and posh team buses. RIP Fignon
@ccrider He did dope he admitted to taking cortisone and amphetamines, i will always have respect for him as a person because he looked at the sport with a deeper perspective than most ,but he still doped which caused riders who didnt dope to be eliminated from the tour and that in turn cost them part of their career which i dont see as justifiable by using the excuse "they were all on drugs that makes it even" because not everyone was and the few who werent had their career chances ruined.
@GiantDefy954 - i just bought his autobiography 'while we were still young'... i guess i'll find out for sure in there. so far it's a really good read, i'd highly recommend it.
Personally, I admire everyone who ride a bike, who will never have the glory and I respect those who are less strong mentally than others because sport is a thing but being a human and heartfelt with others, this is very different. Fignon or not, life is and will be the same. He was too proud and thought as if the world cared a lot about the TdF. It's a sporting event, that's it. Anyways, RIP professeur.
I was afflicted and very sad by his death. I always liked him as a cyclist. But I don't like very much when he says that he is only interested in those who win, those who are first, he thinks we must be first or nothing. That's why he thinks the french cyclists are not enough good, they could be better. He is very strict. Is he the greatest cyclist, no, was he clean, no. I don't like either when he says, everyone doped at his period in the bunch. Did he check each one?He was a machine, he said.
Superd222tube, that Fignon was done for amphetamines is a well known fact to anyone of our age. As a matter of fact he was fined in 1987 as well.
I think you're wrong about the blood doping, though (unless you don't know the difference). I reckon that, had he meddled with that sort of stuff, he wouldn't have needed to retire when he did. Many of his contemporaries also retired between 92 and 94 because suddenly they couldn't keep up any more.
donno but the famous tour de france with such tiny seconds between lemond vs fignon was still the most exciting tour besides...lance armstrong vs ullrich.
fignon vs greg at the end of the 8oies did so much motivate me to start training bymyself and later on with a bc club...was such a good time, so much freedom and lots of hours outside and not in a boring office. when i see pictures of the heroes today, you even see more how fast we are getting old...scary hehe

I don't think it was just old age.

Yes he did. It made the new York Times too.
Do a search of "New York Times, 17 Sept 1989 Fignon"
It's all there...

Laurent Fignon WAS a blood doper and he DID test positive. Sept 17, 1989:
1989 Laurent Fignon tested positive for amphetamines at the Grand Prix de la Liberation in Eindhoven
He used other methods which went undetected too...
Bottom line: He is a blood doper!!!
superd222tube 2 years ago
he has cancer in stomach which could - maybe - be caused by medicaments abuse ?

Great memories of a great rider : always attacking, never afraid, audacious.
When will we concentrate on that magnificent sport called cycling again?
Vive le cyclisme!!
