Hi Guys, if you want a recap on the topics of biology like this, then you can listen to my biology song on my channel if you wish. thank you for your support. lyrics explains!
Know how solute concentration differences can drive the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Be able to predict which direction water will flow. CAN U ANSWER THIS FOR ME! I KNOW THE ANSWER BUT I NEED TO MOVE ON TO THE OTHER STUFF LOL!
Suspended was added to make sure the tube was fully elevated :) sorry for confusion.
You may be surprised then that even without a membrane the u tube experiment takes a few weeks to reach equilibrium, so the density of the salts on one side causes the other side to rise allowing the salt free sollution to sit on top of the salt solution without much in the way of cross contamination. I have left the tube in place for a few weeks, until wifey got fed up with it and moved it :)
If a U Tube is used which contains salt solution and food colouring on one side and clean water on the other side with both open ends elevated and the bottom of ther U tube suspended off the ground how long should it take for equilibrium of fluids to develop?
Im not sure why it is suspended from the gorund? Also the key feature in osmosis is the semi-permiable membrane, are you assuming the two solutions are seperated by such a membrane? Osmosis rates would also depend on the temperature, there is an equasion which determines the rate of osmosis, I think its the Ernst equation, or something like that. I guess at room temperature equiblibrium would be reached in about an hour with most set-ups on tis scale, John
I enjoyed the video, thank you. However, you use the word 'random' quite liberally. I think a better explanation would consider the laws of physics in determining every single movement of even the smallest detectable particle.
Thank you so much! i finally get it! I started with Osmosis so i got the high concentration to low concentration confused. In Osmosis more water=solvent, less water= solute meaning that solvent would have a higher concentration thus moving from left to right. While in Diffusion the SOLUTE a.k.a ink will the the higher Concentration! Thus, spreading to the low concentration area! The whole time i though that WATER high concentration was constant and the solute being high conc didnt make sense! TY
Heat=density change, which generates motion in the form of a downward flow and a return flow, which like a lava lamp causes movement and would undoubtedly mix your food colouring with the water
As the ink sank, it indicated a density difference with the water, again causing circulation.
you are a fantastic teacher!

My type of Osmosis example was based on a Liquid to liquid salt solution :P
