I'm no mathematician, but if the ship's 'Nerva' engine uses constant acceleration to provide a 9.8 m/s gravity, wouldn't that mean the fuel and time required to decelerate or manouver woudl be increasing exponentially too? Sounds like a risky way to fly a spaceship.

this is the film that redeemed cannon films in my view. absolutely excellent. the decision to create a bat-monster as a nod in the direction of the classic vampire myth is a masterful one. also, the book is excellent.

Anyone thinks this movie does something different to the vampire mythology? people are use to the Dracula, Anne Rice, True Blood, Buffy, Angel, Twilight, etc mythology, why can't they make more vampires of this kind without the fangs and blood drinking mentality everyone knows, idiots aren't educated well on vampires.

A visually stunning movie filled with action,gore and special effects.

Other movies in the 80s with a particular aesthetic were The Keep (1983)

and The Hunger (1983) .

@ayianapia I couldn't agree more. Most of Tobe Hooper's films are quite stunning visually. It's a shame that the majority of his work, including this film, are looked down upon by so many horror fans because they really are impressive works of art, if only from a purely visual standpoint.

sci-fi horror is a genre that has so much potential for great achievement yet yields such poor material.

check out "pandorum" that is a badass sci-fi horror with cool plot twists.

but... as far as classic sci-fi horror goes, "alien" has my vote of course!

Not all vampires have fangs and suck blood but there are some breeds in Asia in myths mainly in Japan where they don't have fangs and suck out souls and there are some breeds of vampires that walk in the sunlight without being killed like the Egyptian kind. Did you know that?

I would have gone with the girl to her ship to be with her - always. I saw a comet once back in 1997 and it will be the only comet that I will ever see. Words couldnt describe how rare comets pass in sight of Earth - it would be another thousand years before it will pass by our Solar System again. Back in 1997 when I saw the comet, it was the most beautiful thing I 'd ever seen. If I was Carl I would've left Earth to be with her.

I actually saw this in the theatre when it was first released. There were only about 10 people in the audience. By the end, the remaining 5 of us had bonded by openly howling with laughter at the screen. GOOD TIMES!

Oh, this is same naff version on region 2 DVD the longer extended naff cut! The theatrical cut had deeper Dolby stereo soundtrack mix that I recorded off NICAM 725 onto VHS Hi-Fi years ago. Some wicked voice panning thou that is not uncommon for this film of that year. Also saw it at the cinema. John Dykstra STAR WARS visual effects is wicked.
