Let me just play devil's advocate and look up "jihad" in the dictionary.

1. a holy war undertaken as a sacred duty by Muslims.

2. any vigorous, emotional crusade for an idea or principle.

A similar English word would be "revolution," which could be a revolution of ideas. Obama said there were multiple definitions, and that's true. And he has condemned terrorist attacks.
