  • good vid im doing a saiga 308 in the next little do you thank a drill press would make the drilling faster and easier?

  • The gas tube helps hold that forearm in place. Next time take it off FIRST, and then the front will slide off easy. . . . Just sayin.

  • excellent stuff. I anticipate spending a lot of time with a Saiga in my lap, parts and tools strewn across the desk, and your videos playing in front of me at some point in the not too distant future. :-)

I forget (or did you not say?)... what caliber Saiga did you go for? I'm thinking 5.45...ammo doesn't seem to get much cheaper than that. No difference in conversion between the different models, is there?

  • @roentgen571 DOH, and there it is..."7.62" right in the video title. Okay, I'm a moron. lol

  • Very informative Fred. I was thinking maybe its time to invest in a Dremel for those rivets on the bottom plate when I get my Saiga because that looked painful lol.

  • Good job Fred, table-top AK gunsmithing...nice...Gotta praise the Kalashnikov!

  • great angles !!

  • Nice work so far Fred. Half way through the first rivet, I was thinking, you need a center punch and a bit sharpener. Good to see that you're well on your way with the conversion.

  • Awesome video, Fred!! Field stripping is as far as I go these days, or maybe putting on custom grips, but conversions that require this kind of custom work is a whole other skill level. Hats off to you!!! Looking forward to the next videos! :-)

  • Great series Fred! I have a great story to tell you about my sog purchase from lowes.....video to follow

  • @fredhart. I was hoping you would cut off the trigger guard so you could get that last rivet from the bottom :)..... I learned allot from this video. I am considering a conversion after my AR build is over. The last parts are supposed to show up Monday!!!! I think I would center punch the rivets before I drill them to prevent the bit from walking. This video was the reality TV version of Saiga conversions. Happy holidays!

  • I found this video absolutely riveting ! (no pun intended)

  • Keep the videos coming, that is great!

  • This is definitely a labor of love!! Why else would you spray metal shavings all over your keyboard? Great vid, Fred!

  • your so nerdy, i love it!

  • was the drill going the wrong way?

  • Loving these videos Fred, very interesting!

  • bench press would be amazing for thise rivets

  • Great video Fred.

  • great video, this one is slightly more gheto and more applicable to people at home

  • @GamersBar That was exactly what I was going for!!! Thank you very much sir!!!

You've got a major operation going on here Fred! Great video my friend.

  • @TheMultiGunMan Thank you again, you are a great friend!!!

  • great detail thanks!

  • @peden33 Thank you very much!

  • @peden33 Your welcome sir!

  • I was so thinking you were gonna drill right into your hand. I was clenching the whole time you were drilling.

  • @theemperor0 It made the video more interesting :)

  • @fredhart That is for sure! I was like "Please don't let the drill slip and go into his!" No one should know that pain.

  • drill from inside

  • @sniper4usmc The rivits were the same on both sides so the outside worked for me better so I did not risk tearing up the inside of the receiver. If I had a punch on hand, things would have been a lot easy for me :) Thank you very much for commenting my friend.

  • @fredhart my saiga is TGI imported saiga with etching/velcro looking on the side...it has flat rivits inside and rounded rivits on outside..for me,drilling from inside was easier way, because rivits were flat

  • and as your drilling put oil on bit the drill bits well last longer

  • @gizmolsg Great idea, I will do that next time I do one of these projects.

  • Nice job Fred, very informative. I think you need to invest in a vise for your workbench. Would make tasks a lot easier.

  • @biguy525 I had a vise on on workbench in my garage but I wanted the better lighting so I did it without out just for all of you :)

  • you need too start with a smaller drill bit then step up bits as you go

but your doing a good job of drilling

  • @gizmolsg Sorry, I did not have a punch so I just went for it. Thank you so much for the kind comment.

  • Good vid, you made it look easy....Right up to the assembly plate rivets......Using a center punch to scar the center for the drill bit to spin in wouldve made it alot easier for you.....Good info thanks for sharing..................................L&B

  • @jerseydevildog I did not have a punch so I just dealt with it, it made for a more interesting video :) It looked like an accident waiting to happen any minute :) Thank you so much for the very kind comment sir!!!

  • great video very informative

  • @CHIPxJHAD Thank you very much
