I was wondering and guessing the same thing. I know Flea kept in contact with John during that period after he quit the band, and you can definitely smell the influence on these recordings. Flea should release this stuff, like Niandra's sister album, lol.
@mussman717word yea its pretty cool that john influenced flea especially since john was the young kid, 8 years younger than flea, in the band. and it would make a good sister album to niandra haha
This isn't very exciting or thought out very well, but the chords and melody at times are actually really cool and i love how its all so spur of the moment it's quite entertaining and nice to listen to :)
Are you joking ?! John has one of the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. In my opinion, he's a better singer than Anthony. Listen to his songs before saying that. John does sing very well ! He was always singing back up in the Pepper's songs. You MUST listen to Chances, Dissolve, The Will to Death, Hope, ... After that if you still think John's a bad singer, I'll eat my hat !
@slbasmc The one and only reason why the Peps are not the most popular band ever is because Frusciante did not sing lead vocals. If he did, they would have beaten metallica in albums sold. If they played punk, they would have beaten Ramones in popularity. Listen to John's covers in the Peppers at least. Fox On the Run, Emily, SOS, to name but few. This guy really did Anthony a favor by not being lead singer. Anthony is the sticking-together-element though, without him there would be no Peps.
@TehSorso Also, I believe there are just as many people that think Frusciante's voice is unlistenable as there are who think he sings like an angel. Kiedis has a more widely accepted voice. And I don't think Froosh wants to be famous, look at his solo career, look at Ataxia, no one knows about it aside from die-hard fans. If Frusciante lead the Chili Peppers, they'd be as well known as the Dirty Mac.
@TehSorso -- I'm sorry, but that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. J.Frusciante is a great singer in his own style, but he's no frontman. Fronting a huge band like the Chili Peppers requires more than a pretty voice - it requires huge attitude, charisma and stage presence, which Anthony oozes. Besides, The Chili Peppers success was forged from Anthony's aggressive rap / singing style, not from soothing singing styles.
@PrayerPeacePurity Prove that frusciante does not have "huge attitude, charisma and stage presence". The fact that he DOES NOT WANT to be the PERMANENT frontman does not qualify as an argument; he can be a pretty damn good temporary one, and it's been proven.
Same goes for Jason Newsted an Metallica, if you heard of them.
@TehSorso -- You're only a pepper fan circa 1998-present. You haven't a clue what brought about success for the chilis (which was before you were born). Anthony's singing / rap style and attitude was and still is a huge part of what made the Chilis successful. Can you really see John singing Suck My Kiss, Give it Away, Sir Psycho or a track from Freaky Styley?
@PrayerPeacePurity it's funny how your attitude screws your username. chill the fuck out dude, it's the nets. This having been said, i'm a pretty big fan of albums like Freakey Styley or Uplift Mofo, but this is beyond the point.
You obviously fail at going through with an assumption. If John was the RHCP singer from day one, would they have used the same style as they really did? Logic tells most people they wouldn't, they would either have been more punk oriented (most likely)
@PrayerPeacePurity and they most definitely would not incorporate rap into their singing - as we all know John does not rap. Probably later they would go on with making slower music, but we cannot know. However, all this depends on John's having wanted to be a frontman, which he obviously did not.
Can you possibly comprehend now? I was just saying that RHCP would have been more succesful had John wished to lead them to it. Hell, they even were when he didn't (remember BSSM,old boy?)
@johnfru No, I just thought it was very similar to John's songs like I'm Always, Femininity, and there are parts of chord progression that I'm sure I've heard in John's songs, I'm just too lazy to try and remember which, etc.
yeah, I understand you, it's a catchy and lo-fi song, has some lyrics with an acoustic guitar... played by a member of RHCP.. But it's Flea singing and playing this song. You were close to the truth bro ; )
Peace
BTW, when you find these similar progressions just let me know, please. Ciao.
@johnfru It's probably the strange ii-IV-V-bII thing, and also before the Third Stone From The Sun-like break he just chromatically goes all to the E, those out of place chords you can hear somewhere on niandra or smile too I think
@johnfru no, you don't understand me, it's not because of what you said but because of what I said that I thought it was John, but anyway who cares. You still didn't tell me how you know that it is flea playing.
Man, I don't want to convince anyone. I know it was Flea from live performance at KBLT FM Studios on SDF 9, 1998. He played also How Could I Love Myself, Love Them So and It Could Have Been at this show. What more can I say.. I think there's no sense in investigating who else could play these songs because then it's very likely that we'd go wrong.. like it could be everyone.. I assume it's his voice, his music, his lyrics and his play. I feel alright with that and It's enough for me..
@johnfru well it would've been nicer if you had said that in first place, without insinuating that my assumption was based on ridiculous reasons mentioned in the first place.
...Okay my friend, I don't laugh at your person. The answer I gave you is in general addressed to all people who asks the same questions. You're not the only one, so don't take offence. Your question was like "you never know.." but I don't play that game, I don't see why should I doubt. Because flea = bass, john = guitar? Oh no, we're back to the first post : /.. @scorpionboy3 said "the only common thing i see is that they style is both raw." and that's what I think too
I really want to gather a punk band together, just so we could try and cover this song. It's fucking excellent as it is, though, but it would sound just as good in the electric format. Shit, I can't believe Flea is so great.

Ok, now, is it John from Flea, or Flea from John? I wish someone asked them in some interview about this
