@chris55000 The reason He didn't get suspended more games is because he any more games and he would miss the Caps vs Pens game on NBC that was coming up at the time. A Crosby vs Ovi match up couldn't happen if Ovi was suspended. So the NHL decided that their rating were more important then the safety and discipline of poor hits and he suspended him 1 game shy of the NBC game.

Even the announcers say "He saw him and pushed from behind." That means it wasn't boarding and Campbell got it bad. Not saying it was a justified hit, but personally find it hard to believe that should be worthy or a suspension.

This is boarding, but not a clean hit. Ovechkin pushed him into the wall. Brian Campbell had no chance of protecting himself. I'm a Blackhawks fan, so losing him was bad for the team. I think the reason he was suspended is the push, but also because he couldn't protect himself.
i am a die hard pens fan, and also a huge ovechkin fan. but cookes hit was much worse by a wide margin. ovechkin plays the game hard every shift, he didnt try and injure campbell.

Ovechkin speeds up from the blue line, intentionally pushes Campbell hard in the back, towards the board. There was no play for the puck from Ovechkin, whatsoever. Completely not fairplay. What was he thinking would happen if Campbell felt after he pushed him? He knows what he's doing, he is to good of a player not to. Unecessary roughness.

Had he ridden him into the boards using his hip or shoulder it would've been a completely clean play, as you're allowed to finish and clear a player out of play, but using all of your momentum and shoving him into the nearby boards is clearly a boarding penalty, and his punishment isn't harsh enough. It was a stupid, dirty play.

Campbell had already drop passed the puck, Ovechkin being the veteran player he is should have seen that and known that. This is boarding, but not a clean hit. Ovechkin pushed him into the wall. Brian Campbell had no chance of protecting himself. I'm a Blackhawks fan, so losing him was bad for the team. I think the reason he was suspended is the push, but also because he couldn't protect himself.

And I agree, Ovechkin does play a good game, but the same can be said for Cooke. He was fighting for the puck and gave a shove just like Ovechkin did here.

But a 2 game suspension? 5 minute major, sure. Watch Ovechkin get boarded into his face and the only penalty doled out is to Mike Knuble for standing up to the douchebag known as Craig Adams. The League is inconsistent, letting players like Matt Cooke get away with real dirty plays and punishing Ovechkin for this weak shit.

Campbell had two choices:
1) Hang on to the puck and go outlet up the right wing.
2) Reverse the flow back to the left wing.
Campbell chose option two. In doing so he let up and left himself vulverable to Ovechkin who guessed he'd coral the puck and go oulet right.
Ovechkin finished his check.
Ovechkin should have let up when Campbell let up. It would have been safer for Campbell.

That was not a nasty hit. It was a push and he wasn't close enough or facing the right way for it to b a legit boarding call. Penalties happen and unfortunitly for Cambell he fell at an strange way. A two game suspension is crazy...2 minutes would have been enough. But the pussies at the NHL want to stop the hitting and make itmore of a skating game...OV is a great player, better than Crosby and the caps will have him back for the playoffs so all will be good in DC!

Ovechkin speeds up from the blue line, intentionally pushes Campbell hard in the back, towards the board. There was no play for the puck from Ovechkin, whatsoever. Completely not fairplay. @0688us You're exactly right...Ovechkin did push him. However, pushing isn't part of hockey. Had he ridden him into the boards using his hip or shoulder it would've been a completely clean play, as you're allowed to finish and clear a player out of play, but using all of your momentum and shoving him into the nearby boards is clearly a boarding penalty, and his punishment isn't harsh enough. It was a stupid, dirty play.

If he hadn't have toe picked he would have gone cleanly into the boards and that would be that. The major penalty was ridiculous and the suspension even more uncalled for.

And this EXACT same hit was used on Ovi before and there wasn't even a call. Search "Craig Adams Vs Mike Knuble" and go to about 1:04. Not only is it boarding, but it is directly from behind, not into the shoulder. But star players being isolated is not new.

Late hit? No-contact was initiated less than 1 second after the pass. I don't think the ref even saw it. He just saw Campbell laying there and made an assumption. The NHL has no credibility in my mind. I don't think Cooke deserved to be suspended, but if this gets one give me a friggen break. I could put together a montage of rediculous cheapshots that didn't result in suspsensions. How about Crosby punching a guy in the nuts when he is tied up with another player? That's silly. Freeze the video just as Ovechkin makes contact. Only at that point does his toe dig into the ice. His momentum was pushed forward abruptly, causing his heel to lift.
If Ovechkin hadn't hit him from behind with enough room to send him flying face-first into the boards (that is, not a typical, strategic check into the boards from close-range), the toe pick would not have occurred.

Toe dig in? Have you ever played hockey or wore hockey skates?! These aren't figure skates, I have never caught my toe, and it is nearly impossible with the blade curve. This is a late hit, and coming in with that speed and pushing a guy 4 ft from the boards is the worst possible combo. It is like hitting someone on an icing touch up.

I think Campbell kinda lost an edge. The way he fell was worse. If Campbell was upright, it would have just been a mediocre hit into the boards. But Ovechkin is a pretty dirty player, he makes a career of making runs at guys whenever he can. Theres a difference btw. checking, which the NHL needs more of, & sizing a guy up from 50 ft away. He thinks that b/c he is who he is he can do whatever. I hate Bettman but hes gotta make an example. It pains me to say it too b/c the NHL is so soft.

OK - right off the bat, I am a big fan of GOOD HITS and GOOD FIGHTS, but this was neither.
Campbell had already drop passed the puck, Ovechkin being the veteran player he is should have seen that and known that. Instead, Ovechkin decided to push Campbell hard as hell in the back, far enough away from the boards to cause an injury like that. Ovechkin was being RECKLESS. Keyword there. I'm all for hits and fights, but reckless hockey is disgraceful to those of us who play hockey with finesse.
