The effect of the weapons used on Nagasaki and Hiroshima was awesomely powerful. The effect of them was in the end a necessary evil. The Japanese were ready to dig in and fight to the last man standing. Marines learned this well on Okinawa and every other tiny island they fought on. The bombs made the Japanese stop, and watch the awesome force they held. Destroying thousands in the blink of an eye, an entire city gone in a flash. That amount of power was enough to end their fighting and the war.
@alexanderdeg1 I've read Digital Fortress, which is a work of fiction. The Nagasaki bomb was not U238. Brown frequently changes historical information for his plot. His work is fiction and shouldn't be construed as historically accurate.
@yvettegr Well, probably, since that book was awesome and because my comment was quite ironic. But still, nobody I know ever heard of it. It's probably because I don't know many bookworms except me...
i think there's other life forms here smarter than us the gov* knew of this went along wt them , then something happend ? we put the bombs underground and exp* with them but why so many ? did they try an wipe another race out for some reason, we are not talking 40 or 50 underground nukes more like many hundreds then to the seas killing so many fish ect what's up wt that one also there's a bigger picture we all don't see here , the real point , someone want to take it frm here ?
well atleast you know the Union could keep a good F-ing secert. I never even knew, thats really bad. Rad-posioning is so not a way i would want to die from.
And the dying continues long after those immediately killed by way of cancers, radiation, and other opportunistic diseases. Always made me really angry when the nuclear industry said statements like no one had ever been killed in a nuclear accident. They knew that was an out and out lie. And when they couldn't meet leak levels, they'd just lobby and have the levels raised so they could say they continued to meet leak levels. Plants leak like a sieve.
The Kyshtym disaster was 100 times worse then Chernobyl. The area is known as the most polluted place on the planet. Figures on how many people actually died have never been released. About 270,000 people were evacuated. The plant had been leaking radiation since it was built, leading up to the explosion in 1957.
Yeah, ive heard that, of corse the US govament dont think that ~.~, they should have just blockcaded them, Jappan cant surive with out its oceans.
Dont forget the Russian problem, the Chernobyl disaster, man that was bad. It was once one of Russia's most moden and cultual citys they had at the time. Nucular power is good but the results of something bad are even worse. surly theres a better power source? (Be Like New Zealand Say no to Nucular power!)
A few years ago the Russian government finally admitted about the 1957 Kyshtym disaster. The Mayak Chemical combined exploded and sent out a radioactive cloud to all the surrounding cities. The Soviets (at that time the Soviet Union) denied anything. But, maps told the story. After 1957 cities were removed from the maps because the cities didn't exist any more. Worse nuclear accident in history, and virtually no one knows about it. Worse than Chernobyl.
sorry you'll have to forgive my spelling is a little bit weak, ive always belived that the US shouldnt have used the atomic bombs on Hiroshima & Nagasaki. such a waste of life and a horrible way to die.
I agree competely. I gave a list of cities we had already destroyed by conventional bombing. There's a little more justification for Hiroshima. Not much, though. None for Nagasaki since it's obvious that was merely to test the device to see the effect. It didn't end the war one day sooner. Japan was already in the midst of surrender.
Nukeler/nucular reminds me of Bush (and Carter, too). I've always been of a mind that if you can't pronounce the word nuclear you should not be allowed near the red button.
I think the site directory, Dr. Kenneth Bainbridge, said it best after witnessing the first Trinity nuclear explosion: "Now we are all sons-of-bitches."
Yes, M.A.D. - Mutual Assured Destruction. Long our government's thought process until Reagan, when he promulgated the mad notion that we could actually win a nuclear war.
Wonder why someone hit your comment as spam? I do have a lot of audio of not only bomb blasts, but lots of other things. I've carried a taperecorder around with me all my life (now digital) and recorded lots of sounds.
Sadly, you're right. More bombs. Bigger bombs. But, don't forget there was a slight win when President Carter put a stop to the Neutron Bomb (kills the people, but keeps the buildings and infrastructure in tact). Bush may have secretly revived the program though. His administration was asked about it a few years ago and essentially said if they wanted to do it, they'd do it, no matter what Congress said.
I want to thank you for reminding us of the suffering that war brings. There will never be a good answer to "should we have used nuclear bombs on Japan". As you've stated we were bombing, burning and killing to an extrordinary extent. Yet not even a hint of negotiation for surrender. The mentality of the time had most believing the entire population of Japan would resist us to the death if Hirohito said to do so. I get a headache contemplating the mentality that justifies war.
The Japanese had been trying to negotiate and were going through General LeMay (George Wallace's VP when he ran for President). General LeMay ordered the dropping of the bombs, which most people don't know about. The only know about the 2 big ones. He liked to bomb things. He wanted to bomb VietNam back to the stone age. Reminds me of the adage, when all you've got's a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail. He had bombs. He wanted to use them even if Japan was trying to surrender.
How'd you like to be marooned on one of those islands?

Great video, but I have to correct you. It is really unknown, but the Nagasaki bomb was actually Uranium 238, read Dan Browns Digital Fortress.

Excellent collection of photos of the same theme! Well done! It would be perfect if you add a song to arouse the viewers' emotion.

What song? I tried some background music, but it didn't work. The subject matter is too somber. Maybe low continuous tones?
yvettegr 2 years ago
@yvettegr go with some ominous classical music. NOT REQUIM FOR A DREAM. it's overused but still epic.

The logic behind acquiring nuclear armament makes my head spin. It reminds of the movie War Games - no winners, only losers.
