I HEARD HIM IN RECITAL IN THE EARLY 60'S AND THE LIGHT VOICE CARRIED FINE WITHOUT AMPLIFICATION AND HE WAS THEN PAST HIS PRIME,. SURE IT WAS NOT BIG BUT BIG ENOUGH AND HIS CHERRY DUET AND SINGING IN ELIXIR WAS EXCELLENT IN THE 50's- he recorded una furtiva beautifully AND WHEN I heard him-- the middle voice was sweet, WITH A GIGLI like SOUND but not the top which did not have the heft of gigli of course not.GIGLI WAS A GREAT LYRIC WHO SANG SO MANY ROLES. FT IS OLDER HERE. try his ELIXIR
No, not the best - a great entertainer and made a beautiful effect but not a great singer. I still like him - thanks for posting. Nothing remotely classical in this lovely recording however.
I think Tagliavini was excellent - very smooth and a lovely voice. He was very much of his period however - very little in terms of ornament for example. But I admire him a great deal and would rather hear him that many other crude and shouting tenors. At his best in things like this and Mascagni's L'Amico Fritz - he made a lovely effect.
@Webarton - Please read what I said - I admire Tagliavini but he knew his strengths and limitations. That's what made him a great artist. This is not belcanto but (as I said) a lovely performance.
